Re: Former Player: Medhi Benatia
Well, the problem is more that he had rather reckless tackles before and he was lucky then. Yesterday it was particularly problematic as he got sent off after 20 minutes already, leaving Bayern short of one player for 70 minutes.

Aguero was already mid-fall when contact was made, though.
Gotta love that latin football.

Ugh, that angle is much, much, much better than the one I got yesterday.
Let's just pretend I didn't say anything.

Needs a rugged partner next to him who isn't afraid of doing the gritty, recovery defending....like Castan.

i really didn't see anything in this game that merits bumping this thread or even singling out benatia as a bad defender .
but these days , if a defender gets nutmegged or posterized, his performance is automatically reduced to zero .

lol Just rewatch the 2nd goal. Kahn was ripping him to pieces: "Lacks quality."

The gif doesn't quite show the entire sequence. Benatia randomly rushed forward to win the header and left Suarez alone.

Re: Former Player: Medhi Benatia
Dont think its a mistake to come out in that situation, depending on the first ball. Its the other 3 defenders who are stupidly not narrowing the space.
Its basic team defending, when a centerback comes out of the back line to win a ball, the other 3 have to narrow the space to decrease the distance from each other and not let the ball go between them should the CB fail to win the tackle. Could drive a bus through that gap, horrible defending from the unit.
That being said, I didnt see the game and therefore didnt see the ball and the likelyhood of him coming to win the first ball. If it wasnt a ball he could win, he has no buisness coming out of the line and then he would be at fault. But the other 3 are still at fault either way.

He was also to blame for the 1st goal.

Re: Former Player: Medhi Benatia
1st goal is worse than the first in my opinion. I know the huge ocean of space in the 2nd makes it seem more amateur, but I can see how it happens.
In that first goal there, Bayern are doing really amateur stuff. You cant try and play offside when there is no pressure on the ball, you just cant...the passer can see everything and knows exactly when to pass and with all the space behind it doesnt even make it a difficult pass.

Yep. We offered Messi 10 yards of space all around and minutes of time on the ball, then we can't complain he picks the perfect pass.
Atrocious team defending for both goals, and all that after going 1:0 up

Benatia messed up for the second goal, he also messed up our offside trap a few times first leg.
That's due to him being out for so long, all in all I think he's a terrific defender.

Re: Former Player: Medhi Benatia
I still need to see the full build up of that first goal to blame Benatia, but ill take your word on it. Again though I have to say the entire back line messed up horribly on that. I refuse to believe Pep wouldnt work on defence line shape, but even if he didnt its basic at this high level to know that when one guy steps out the space he left has to be covered by all 3 defenders shifting across to the center a few meters.
And yes, the Suarez chance from the MATS goal kick was Benatia again playing him onside. Didnt look across the line to see Suarez run, nor anticipate Messi might win the header.
But yes, Benatia isnt all of a sudden a poor defender. I think that really in todays game where everything is analysed much faster and much more specific, all of the defenders errors are magnified. There is also some luck involved, because the mistakes Benatia made he (and nearly all defenders) have made before and will make again, the only difference is it doesnt lead to a chance and nobody sees it.

Re: Former Player: Medhi Benatia
The repetition on TV at halftime made it look really really bad. I'm going to search for a proper video of it, wait a sec.

Re: Former Player: Medhi Benatia
At 2:44, but you still don't see it from the angle they showed on German TV where they showed Benatia's entire movement. Benatia is basically initially where Suarez is and then rushes forward to win the header even though Schweinsteiger is already there.

Re: Former Player: Medhi Benatia
If anything, Bayerns defending as a unit sucks nowadays, but that's just because their coaching and tactics don't empathize defending anymore, it's just assumed they won't have to do it because of midfield dominance and possession, yet every time the defenders are needed, they are horribly positioned because the team as a whole forgot how to defend actual sets of play that happen.

Re: Former Player: Medhi Benatia
Yeah, thats good enough for me to see. Benatia had no buisness being out there. Worse than I thought.
Not only was Bastian there already, the chances of Suarez being able to control that ball and turn in the midfield are VERY low. That is the only reason a CB needs to break the line to come out, to stop a striker who dropped deep from turning and running forward.
Risk/reward decision. The reward of winning that ball is very low compared to the risk you taking trying.
Ill push past Viva's comments though, I obviously cant take what he is saying seriously. To think that that goal had anything to do with coaching is quite strange (though not for him considering who is the coach of this team)...at any level, you cant make decisions like that. Even with 0 coaching, you cant make decisions that bad.
