Re: Jack Wilshere
Right now, England haven't got a defensive midfielder or anyone suited to a holding role now that Gerrard's retired. Hodgson seems to be leaning towards a diamond formation and so needs somebody to replace Gerrard as the base. Wilshere, with his range of passing and ability to evade pressure, is probably the best fit for it.
It's not a bad idea, really. Henderson and Delph played ahead of him against Switzerland and they basically did most of the dirty work for him.

Re: Jack Wilshere
Every dat I think Wilshere should be converted to a DM more and more.
He needs to be coached into it though because he doesn't fully understand how to play there, lacks the discipline and I am unsure whether he is intelligent enough to excel there. Has all the other attributes though.
Early in his career we saw him operate as a deeper lying CM and his distribution was phenomenal. How he moves with the ball is ideal for a deeper player as his use of lateral space is fantastic. He has the ability on the ball and the passing range to open things up for our attacking players. Rambo alongside him as a b2b would be immense.
I feel like the way he's playing now he doesn't fully understand his role which is leading to poor decision making on the ball.
Should have brought in Cambiasso to educate him imo. He just needs to work on his discipline and defensive duties.

Re: Jack Wilshere
He can still offer something offensively so playing him as DM would be a waste maybe when he is in 30's like Arteta but not at the moment unless we have players injured or suspended then he can come in and do a job there. I don't think he is comfortable when playing that role, he wants to get on the ball and make things happen as opposed to just sitting deep.

Re: Jack Wilshere
I have no idea why Hodgson is trying to turn him into a DM, he has shown none of the qualities to be one so just makes no sense.
His natural instinct is always to drive forward on the ball, that in itself should tell you playing him at DM is just asking for trouble imo.
For me he needs the Ramsey role next to a DM so he has the space to drive forward and pick a pass/1-2

Re: Jack Wilshere
He's using him as a deep-lying playmaker and not as a traditional holding player. His job for England will be less breaking up play and winning the ball back - though being that deep requires you to do some of that - and more starting attacks and recycling the ball for the team. In that game against Switzerland, he only broke forward from his position once. In recent interviews from him, he's talked about watching the likes of Pirlo so he can learn the required movement for the position, so there seems to be a willingness from him to adapt.
It might work for them since he'll have hard-working central midfielders in front of him doing the dirty work, but it's not something that can be replicated at Arsenal without changing the shape of the team. You can't have him as a deep-lying playmaker and then have Ramsey and Ozil or Cazorla in front of him because they'll just push up the field all the time, leaving him isolated. His position in our midfield is a lot more problematic than his position in England's.

Re: Jack Wilshere
In my opinion Jack has many attributes to play as a deep-lying midfielder, especially when he's surrounded by the likes of Henderson, Delph. He's a hard worker, is a very good passer of the ball, long or short passes and a good tackler, the rest will come with time.
He will need some time to adapt for sure as his insticts right now are of a box to box midfielder but we know Jack as someone who's always trying to learn things and improve, it will also help him in his Arsenal role, simplifying his game and be more intelligent defending wise. I certainly don't see it as outrageous as it is made to be.

It means we will have to kiss goodbye to his burst of pace and his little one-twos around the box

Re: Jack Wilshere
he can still use those one twos to open up space from deeper positions and then distribute. I don't think he will ever be like Pirlo because I think he has more to offer defensively. More like DDR minus the long range shooting.

jack wilshere is a box 2 box center midfielder, and he will come good if he gets an injury free season and consistent play time.

no doubt. DDR is also a b2b really. but can play AM, b2b or DLP. Jack is capable in all three positions too imo.

Re: Jack Wilshere
Trying to convert WIlshere into a DM would mean accepting that he's not going to be of such quality what was expected of him. The equivalent would be Liverpool trying to make Henderson a DM. I hope Wenger won't go that way even if Hodgson tried playing Wilshere there. I don't think Wilshere would be a successful DM. If he can't cut it at Arsenal he should eventually move to play regularly at a mid-table PL club, like Jonjo Shelvey did.

There is absolutely no comparison between Shelvey and Wilshere, even in a sense of moving to a club for more playing time

Motm.
It's funny how last season, it was all Ramsey.
This year though, Jack has been the better player by a wide margin. The Goku/Vegeta rivalry pushing each other to raise their power levels analogy continues to prove its accuracy

Re: Jack Wilshere
Jack was absolutely immense today.
The composure and class in his goal was just amazing. His tenacity and ball retrieval ability in the midfield today was top notch.
I hope this continues and only gets better.

Re: Jack Wilshere
Weird how Ramsey underperforming (compared to last year and compared to Wilshere now) still manages to score and assist.
Wilshere was undoubted MOTM (arguable that Sanchez was in contention) but Ramsey had an average game and still managed to assist. Hopefully they can both play well at the same time.

Shelvey was a young player who couldn't make it at a top club, lately there seem to have been questions whether Wilshere can make it at a top club?
And btw, Shelvey has more PL career goals than Wilshere
Anyway, mayhaps today's game against Man City puts the question to rest whether Wilshere should be made a DM or not. The answer is 'no'. I understand that Hodgson needs someone to play DM now that Gerrard's retired and there are no obvious candidates, but playing Wilshere there isn't the way to go.

Re: Jack Wilshere
No, Wilshere is better, but the atmosphere seems to have gotten to a one where it's questioned whether Wilshere has a place in Arsenal's XI. Shelvey didn't have a place in Liverpool's and moved to a mid-table PL club where he's starting regularly and filling his spot. Wilshere is the better player but if he was unable to make it at Arsenal, he should do what Shelvey did.
But Jonjo still has more PL goals, though

Re: Jack Wilshere
Wenger has too much faith in him to sell him. He's shown why so far.
And if he really had to go, he could very well stay in the Champions League and find a team to start for. Wouldn't have to go to a team in the bottom half.

Re: Jack Wilshere
Except Wenger would give up his son before Jack, he has complete trust and in a way paying off last 2,3 games. Shelvey never shown performance like Jack did at the age 17, and he having plenty of play time, dont think he needs to worry.
