Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
Then what do you want them to do? They spent a total of 0 pounds the past 2 windows while the competing teams around them reinforced their squads with 100s of millions of pounds.
City: 77m, Arsenal: 93m, Liverpool: 164m, Chelsea: 210m
You can't compete in this league unless you spend as evidenced by City's huge spending in prior years and recently Liverpool's spending to bridge the gap. Spurs are a paper-thin team that drastically needed reinforcement but didn't get it. The fact that they are currently in 3rd, and in the semifinals of the CL has to be due largely to Poch. For you to say he is "mediocre" is absolutely absurd and shows you don't watch him.
If they lose Poch and continue this lack of spending policy, watch them freefall. You can @me.

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
Some people think this is a weak year for Spurs/Poch based on point total but I think it's one of the strongest
From a managerial perspective, where Spurs are atm in the league + CL is way more impressive than when he finished with 86 points, although that's enough to win the league in a decent number of years.
Janssen is getting minutes. He's played gorgeous n'kodou, Sissoko has a starting role. Llorente has been an important player for Tottenham this year. I don't think Poch has a single CM. Spurs should be 6th

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
I don't want them to do anything, I'm merely asking what's so special about Pochettino.
What place do you think Spurs with the best striker in the league, top 3 goalkeeper in the league, top 3 attacking mid in the league should be getting based on squad potential?
You talk about spending but United spending 100 million on Lukaku means nothing when Spurs have Kane for free and Eriksen for 10 million.

Honestly, this Tottenham would be challenging for this version of La Liga.
@futbol desperately trying to hang on to the souvereign air of yesteryear, we all know both you and your league have lost it

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
Poch brought through almost all these players you are citing for being the best. Does he not deserve credit at least for that? I mean, really you are bending over backwards not to give this guy credit. Do you not see that?
My points backing Poch are:
He has brought through and developed top players like Kane, Son, Dele.
He has made average players like Trippier, Winks, and Walker-Peters look decent to great
And he has made it work with garbage players like Sissoko, Llorente, and Dier.
All while having no money to reinforce the squad, and the competing teams around him vastly outspending him.
This squad is a 6th place and Europa League level squad at best.
Poch is the reason they are in 3rd place and CL semis. If you think any "mediocre" manager can do that I can't help you.

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
He has definitely done enough to be acknowledged as a top coach, especially when you see how the other teams are outspending him. He knows how to bring stability and improve the overall quality of his squad to be among the best in the league.
My only problem with him is that he doesn't guarantee trophies. Now, he certainly has a strong case as to why he hasn't been able to win it in the last couple years. Competing with Guardiola in the league is almost impossible, especially when you see the difference in spending power between the two clubs. But remember when he lost the league to Leicester? He had no excuse not to win it that year, and yet he managed to screw it up. I'm not belittling Leicester, but Spurs certainly had enough quality to win it that year.
To me Poch is very similar to Wenger. In that I mean, he gives you CL football, he has a good eye for spotting and developing young talent and every now and then he takes down a heavyweight (whether it's in the CL or the PL) with a memorable performance. But he lacks the winning mentality that SAF for example had in abundance. The kind of winning mentality that makes the team not satisfied with simply finishing in the top four, but to go all the way to the crown.
I would like to see him working at a club with a bigger budget than Spurs. A club that demands from its manager to win major trophies regularly. A club where simply finishing in the top four doesn't cut it. Only then we'll see the true worth of Poch.

What's his excuse now to get utterly dominated at home to an Eredivisie side?

None if one is being honest. He got beat by a better side, that's how it goes usually.

The result I don't care about. My question would be why in the first 40 minutes he looked like coaching Espanyol against Pep's Barca.

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
Really this is more of a praise to Ajax than it is a knock against Poch. Ajax have dominated everyone they have faced this entire tournament, it’s incredible. They show up with a belief that they are better and play like it.

And he adjust before the 40th minute mark, realising his initial tactics were gash and lo & behold, Spurs started getting better ball rotation. Unfortunately, his squad just didn't have the quality up front to do anything of note particularly on the wings.
Again, he has no excuse, I wouldn't give him one but I'm not gonna rock on him because he got beat by a better team. Of course, if you wanna laugh at Spurs, I'll gladly join you imo.

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
Honestly, I think the fact that the only attackers he had in his whole squad were Alli, Moura, and Llorente, kind of is, well,
an excuse.
Because Tottenham were the dominant team for 60 minutes of the game, same cannot be said for Real or Jjuve.

... So we are going to ignore the 2nd 50 minutes? Ie the larger part of the game?futbol wrote:The result I don't care about. My question would be why in the first 40 minutes he looked like coaching Espanyol against Pep's Barca.
Honestly if they had Kane playing at least 1 of those headers would've made it in and then people would be praising him...

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
Agree with BC, I don't understand this hate futbol has for Poch. I mean really, this guy is going to bump this thread every time Spurs lose?
No shame in losing to Ajax, particularly when Ajax are full strength and had time to rest. Spurs on the other hand had an absolute garbage team out. And the result wasn't that far off what Spurs wanted. They were clearly playing for the draw knowing at least one qualified attacker would be back for the second leg.

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
This supposedly weak team, has already gotten by 2 “super” teams and are now 90 minutes away from facing Barcelona in the CL championship game! Let that sink in a bit before continually putting them down as a minor team!

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
Well, 0-1 first leg advantage is nothing really. The tie is still open and Spurs can easily bounce back.
I'm not putting Ajax down, but they are not as strong as people think they are. If they reach the final, I expect them to get smashed by Barça/Liverpool.
Also Bill, please stop calling Madrid a "super" team. We are not that anymore.

Like clockwork, the futbol bump. Get a better hobby, guy.
And to answer your question- obviously because they played with 9 men for more than half a match you nit, lol. Bournemouth had a 2 player advantage and it took them until the 91st minute to score.

He didn't get any excuse Tuesday either (CBarca doesn't count obviously). I really can't explain your disdain for Poch aside from I guess his Espanyol link(?).
