The Champions League Thread
With that win against Norwich, Liverpool has confirmed Champions League for next season. It was in 2009-10 season when we last graced this competition. That’s wasn’t a very memorable season either. We finished third in the group and got relegated to Europa League. This long absence means we have slid down the seeding and will nestle in a rather tough group. Only seven players; Reina, Johnson, Agger, Skrtel, Kelly, Gerrard & Lucas; from our last Champions League campaign are still in our squad.

Re: The Champions League Thread
Not totally related to the topic, but seeing his name there makes me feel a little sorry for Reina. He has been / was a great servant to us for many years, many of which weren't as successful as could have been hoped for. Now we are having an incredible season, are close to winning the damn league title and have secured our place in the CL for next season. So I feel a little sorry for Reina that now that there is a shining bright light at the end of the tunnel after several barren years, just then he has been cast out. Also, I don't know if Mignolet has been better than Reina this season, Simon's season hasn't been without mistakes. I wouldn't say Mignolet has looked a world-class keeper, so Reina would have an argument to say that he would have done at least as good a job for us this season. Anyway.

^ You may want to check out the goal Napoli conceded this weekend which cost them 2 points .
Reina's performances for Napoli have been either brilliant, or some absolutely farcical hawlers. Mig has had his fair share of mistakes too, but he is young, his first season in a big club, and he will learn and improve as everyone does under BR. Next season this time, we'll know a lot more .

Re: The Champions League Thread
Reina made more or less the same number of mistakes than Mignolet this year (Atalanta, yesterday etc) , so good performance overall , but the Spanish was awful last year. He needed to change habitat and regenerate under Benitez, enough sure so Liverpool got an upgrade with this exchange tbh.

I really feel sorry for Reina, he was at our service for all these years, it's really sad that he left just when we're about to win the league.
Also, imagine if we draw a group like this:
Bayern
Juventus
Liverpool
Monaco
Supposedly we're going to be in 3rd or 2nd pot due to our absence from CL.
I think this would be the best scenario for us:
Benfica
Shakhtar Donetsk
Liverpool
Unknown scrub team

I don't care who we get in our group. In a way a difficult group with a big name or two would feel more special after our absence from the competition.

Re: The Champions League Thread
I doubt there's any precedent in footy for this, but that's at least equally due to the rule changing recently as this is a crazy idea. Also, I know American teams do similar things, and I'm personally a fan because of the sentiment behind it.
I've heard that teams now get to award a set number of winners medals as they see fit, without regard to appearances made. If we end up pulling this out, I would really like to see a few given out to Carra and Reina. It would be sentimental, and nobody would pretend they were involved in a playing sense. But I think both of them deserve it.
In American sports, the teams design, commission (and I believe pay for, but don't quote me on it) the championship rings that get handed out, so they can do whatever the hell they want. I know for a fact that teams have given them out to players that were traded long before they passed the games threshold, or to longtime favorites. This would be a similar gesture.

@ Stevie: Reina, Borini nor Carragher won't get one. You have to play a minimum of 10 appearances in the league (not sure if total, or 10 starts) for the team that finishes as Champions for you to get the medal. That makes them ineligble because well, they don't play for us. I don't even think Enrique (who IS a Liverpool player and is actually alive) will get one as he's not played enough games for us due to injury.
On topic:
We need to improve upon our second halves next season. We can't let a CL team have as much respect as we've been given this season to them, or they'll make us pay. We've been somewhat lucky this season that it's destiny for us to win the league; because we've almost bottled games away. We can't do that in Europe.

Do you remember Reina's first season?
It was about as comical as De Gea's. People were questioning the signing when we already had Dudek (who was inconsistent himself). Pepe almost lost us the FA cup final too, and then turned it all around in the penalty shoot out.
Keepers take somewhat longer to settle than outfield players. Which sounds stupid, but it's always been like that. It normally takes a season for the goalkeeper to find out what his defence is like, there's a different style of play from Liverpool to Sunderland (he had to just clear the ball at Sunderland, he's encouraged to pass it out from the back now), not too mention the mentality of wanting to win every single game to just escaping relegation. We hadn't really had a settle defence until recently, too. Majority of the goals conceded have been from either our own mistakes (where Mignolet is to blame himself too) and set pieces, so he's doing a somewhat good job from open play and shot stopping. Better than Reina, anyway. (Based off last season.)
A year experience under his belt, and he'll be massive for us like how he was in the first 4 months at the club.

Re: The Champions League Thread
Went and checked some fringe players' PL apps:
Alberto 9 apps (all sub)
Enrique 8 apps
Kelly 5 apps
Aspas has 13, many of them only for a few minutes. Alberto must be sweating for an appearance and feels a little awkward for Enrique...

Re: The Champions League Thread
Mignolet is a brilliant shot stopper, excellent on the line, but sometimes looks completely clueless when it comes to cleaning the crosses. It's definitely his weak spot.
We better sub Alberto in vs Newcastle around 80-90 min

It used to be 10 apps, they have changed it to 5 this season. Enrique, Alberto, and Kelly will all get one.

I could've sworn the change had nothing to do with appearances anymore. Can't remember where I read that, though.

I guess Alberto's won't be an issue as a 10min appearance can easily be fit in any of the 3 matches!

Re: The Champions League Thread
So, any preferences whom you'd like us to draw in the Group Stage? Obviously we don't know all the clubs who shall still qualify and in which pots are everyone going to be, but we can guess something. We are currently 32nd in UEFA club coefficients list, so we'll be in pot 3 or 4.
http://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/uefarankings/club/
Actually, I'm counting that there are nine clubs above us who will not be in the CL next season, so if the coefficients don't change much, then we should be in pot-3.
Personally I'd really like to have AS Roma in our group. Their story of this season has been largely similar to ours, unexpectedly finishing 2nd under new'ish ownership that's looking to revive the club's fortunes. Also an American ownership with apparently close ties (?) to our Fenway Sports Group people. They would be a tough opponent, but it would make for two very interesting games with their back stories. However, if we will be in pot-4 then there's no chance to draw Roma as they will be in pot-4 (55th in coefficients).
The easiest team we could probably get from pot-1 would be Benfica or Porto (if Porto qualify through play-off rounds), 6th and 10th in coefficients. However, I would be all for getting one of the superpowers (Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich).
From what will be pot-2 I'd prefer Juventus over Schalke or Dortmund, but perhaps Basel would be my favoured opponent.
Benfica (pot-1)
Basel (pot-2)
Liverpool (pot-3)
Roma (pot-4)
Would be pretty sweet, no?
But maybe it'll be:
Real Madrid
PSG
Liverpool
Galatasaray
