Re: The official Tennis thread
I've always used the age excuse to justify Federer being better than Djokovic. You know, perhaps 31 year old 2012 Wimbledon champions Federer would steam roll through today's 32 year old Novak Djokovic.
But I just hate Federer's backhand and he's not as mentally strong as Djokovic. Maybe Prime Djokovic IS better than Prime Federer.

the only good point you made there is that he I too think he is mentally stronger than Roger in the tight moments.

Re: The official Tennis thread
Federer has been the better player overall so far, but old age is against him in this last set.
Re: The official Tennis thread
Lol, how many years has old Fed been losing against Djoko because of his backhand and mental consistency? Take the blinders off if you think his compensatory backhand slice would place him as an all time great baseliner.El Gunner wrote:The Madrid One wrote:I've always used the age excuse to justify Federer being better than Djokovic. Why did you change your point from overall game to baseliner though? Both Djokovic and Nadal are better pure baseline players than him.

The way i compare between Novak and Fed is how they would do against each other, playing in different slow courts and different fast courts. I'm starting to think Novak would do better overall.

For a moment there it looked like you were going to be right dany, because Roger missed forehands he would usually put in, but Djokovic made a few unforced errors as well. He looks a bit tired too. Match back on serve

Roger's prime prime was 2006-2008 though, so I don't know how good our memories are to make these comparisons.
He obviously still maintained a high level, but he only really worked on his all-round game since then to better compensate for his backhand and his aging.

thought he was finished 5 years ago when he struggled for fitness against jobbers. But i have no idea how he managed to get here and he keeps coming back.
He wins this and there is no debate for the GOAT of tennis

Rinse repeat each and ever tiebreaker, that Novak mentality prevailing at the end of the day.
Thrilling final. Insane that Roger can still go these miles at this level at his age.

Re: The official Tennis thread
Darndest thing happened, I lost my internet connection right after Fed broke Novak in the 5th set and was serving for the title. I had to go somewhere and hours later when i come back i see Novak lifting the trophy...
Federer is def dead to me after this one. My faves ever are Marat Safin, David Nalbandian, and now Djokovic and Federer share the third spot but I see Djokovic as greater. With his athleticism, mental strength, and backhand, he'll probably be playing at 38 too. Djokovic to retire with most grand slams and most weeks number 1.

Re: The official Tennis thread
The thing is, I feel Djokovic will eventually surpass both Nadal and Federer in Grand Slam wins if he stays injury-free. Out of the three, he's the one who seems the most consistent to me, and he almost always delivers regardless of whether he's playing on clay, hardcourt or grass.
If you look at the number of grand slam wins in recent years, you'll notice he's head and shoulders above them. He's just relentless. And I can't help but think that The US Open might have had a different outcome, hadn't he withdrawn with a shoulder injury.
Nadal will continue to dominate RG because he's the undisputed king of clay. Federer, on the other hand, is past his prime, but I think he'll continue to win a grand slam every now and then.
Just to put this in perspective; let's just take a moment and look at his insane numbers:
While Federer managed to win 20 grand slams in 15 years and Nadal 19 in 14 years, Djokovic won 16 in just 11 years. And he's younger than both of them. That's insane.
He'll continue to win every year more grand slams than the other two combined, and that's why I think it's only a matter of time before he surpasses the two GOATs.

Re: The official Tennis thread
What is striking, and indeed sad for the future of tennis is the lack of any form of competitive spirit from the younger generation.
Zverev, Tsitsipas, Thiem, Kyrgios, etc. all destined to topple the old guard yet the grandpas are still winning well into their 30s.

Most of them have weak mentality. The moment they get paired with one of the GOATs they just give up.

Re: The official Tennis thread
Djokovic won his 17th grand slam today at the Australian Open. So now we have:
1. Federer: 20 grand slams (38 years old)
2. Nadal: 19 grand slams (33 years old)
3. Djokovic: 17 grand slams (32 years old)
I'm not a die-hard tennis fan, but even I can conclude that having three tennis players with such an insane number of grand slam wins playing all in the same era is a blessing for us.
That's like having Michael Jordan with his '96 bulls compete against Lebron and Kobe today.
Will be interesting to see who's going to end up having the most GS when they all retire.

Re: The official Tennis thread
Probably Djokovic, still seems very fit and the youngest of them three. But so too Nadal after his injury scares, and so long as he plays, the French Open is a bankable win for him. So properly between them two. Federer has been playing unbelievable in the past 5 years for his age and should be commended for the grand slams he has won during that time, he actually could have won one or two more actually
