Rooney not World Class
"Look at his approach and mentality compared to Cristiano Ronaldo's. Polar opposites."
"Rooney potentially, could have been world class. But why is Ronaldo a Ballon d'Or winner and Rooney isn't?
"Players who have worked with both say the level of discipline Ronaldo has is the reason he is the best player in the world."
"When you see Rooney smoking cigarettes," Barton continued, "is he doing everything he can to be the best player in the world? The gulf is getting wider but if it was on talent alone, Rooney is a better player than him."

Re: Rooney not World Class
I think he is right about Rooney, who has been doing little of WC in the last 2 years and we can attribute that to both his attitude and United's situation.
Of course, it depends on your own definition of WC and how wide you cast the net.

Re: Rooney not World Class
Joey Barton is an Everton fan . But he doesn't hate LFC, besides he contributed to solicit the truth about Hillsborough as when he instigated a Twitter campaign supporting an online petition that backs the release of documents relating to the Hillsborough , and other things .. . truth finally emerged as a result then
or as when he defended Suarez from from aggressive English media after his bite
TBH I think Joey Barton is as Dr.Jekill and Mr. Hyde , i have evaluated quite Barton for some things , he capable of Idiot things known by all but yet moments of brilliant thoughts and initiatives ( I read sometimes his blog) , on the other hand he is one of the most cultured players , great reader of philosophers and classics.
About this thought on Rooney, it ' s a legitimate thought, I don't think he wanted to diminish.
indeed, when he says that " but if it was on talent alone, Rooney is a better player than him." (and the other is Cristiano Ronaldo , so a tribute to Rooney's talent) means how much he could give more ( anyway one of most consistent EPL players ever) , a sort of regret.
on the other hand I notice the fact that Barton is always very careful to English football , great fan of Englland and pessimism and defeatism prevails in his thoughts.
convinced that the English football is devolving since 1998 for example.

Re: Rooney not World Class
The conversation flows from what makes Barton tick to what lights his fuse. He says his fuse is harder to ignite these days because he has learned to control the destructive anger that has caused so many problems in his life
21 December 2013
QPR midfielder Joey Barton was sent off late on after being booked twice in a minute. Barton had been cautioned in the 84th minute for a challenge on Gary Taylor-Fletcher and was then shown a second yellow card seconds later after kicking the ball at the same player.

What is retarded about it? Putting aside the fact Barton is a gobshite who likes the sound of his own voice far too much, he has a point, well at least one depending on your definition of world class.
Would Rooney get into your first choice XI? Or your second, or third, or fourth even?
I can think of a fair few forwards I would choose over him.

Re: Rooney not World Class
100% agree with him. While Ronaldo put his head down and trained, Rooney put his head down and tucked into Mccdonalds. When they were coming up its obvious Rooney had more talent. Rooney seems worse than when he was a teenager. If Rooney had ROnaldos dedication his career would be a different story. It's obvious to anyone that actually followed United when they both joined. Talent does not mean you are better player. There are so many other intangibles that make you a great footballer. This 'talent' talk means *bleep* all tbh. Rooney should look back at his career with either regret or delight with how he managed to con United to giving him 3ook a week.

Re: Rooney not World Class
Totally agree with everything Barton said
Rooney SHOULD be winning Ballon D'ors.. But year after year he isn't even in the conversation. Messi + Ronaldo and Ribery could all go down injured for a whole year and he still wouldn't win it.
He didn't want to be the best bad enough. Content riding trophies at united and holding them hostage for ridiculous money

Re: Rooney not World Class
Rooney being world class or not depends on what you call world class. For me world class means something like the best 20-30 players on earth and yeah Rooney isn't in there. Other people call 15 strikers alone world class so obviously he'd be world class by that definition.

Re: Rooney not World Class
He's 100% correct and its something me and a few others have said on this forum before.
Rooney is a failed talent for all intensive purposes.... he's had a great career but his lack of professionalism compared to his peers has meant he's not reached the level he should have done.
A lot of people don't seem to remember the talent gap between Rooney and Ronaldo when they both first joined Man Yoo.... it was huge.
At the time everyone considered Rooney the better player.... difference was Ronaldo worked his ass off to become a top 3 player of his era minimum while Rooney felt like he'd done it at 19 years old.
Its really a shame, but having said all of this he's still a great player just someone who could have been much better.
Its a shame really.

Re: Rooney not World Class
Also who cares what type of person Barton is? he's critiquing Rooney as a player not as a person.
Its like when people say a former player says he knows more than the average fan because he played the game....
Well i got news for ya.... when you are analysing the game you become an analyst and not playing and thus we have the right to critique you as an analyst.
Fed up with that BS.

Re: Rooney not World Class
Rooney has been mismanaged. In recent years I see him lingering around in central midfield playing long balls to the wings because United's best central midfielder is still a 40 year old converted winger. I mean look at his career. When Ronaldo was there he was being shunted to the wings and playing a second fiddle role. After Ronaldo left SAF didn't bother to strenghten the team and let them decline. And now they have Moyesiah.
Give him to Bayern, Barca, Madrid and he'll score 40+ goals every season. Much better player than Falcao, Costa, Cavani and all the other "top" strikers nowadays. Just surrounded by crap (players and management).
