God, all these superhero movies.
How does one start to become a marvel fanboy? I don't wanna be left out in the cold because it looks like this current wave of superhero movies will be going on until 2020.

Do what I did. Had absolutely zero knowledge. I used just watch every film separately usually years apart and never really got into the whole story line. And usually forget what the heck one movie was about and judge the next movie completely on its own. Which is actually very wrong.

Just put some time off to go on a marathon of MCU(Marvel Cinematic Universe). If you watch them chronologically and pay attention to the characters being introduced and story line unraveling all the films intertwine. You figure out the whole story and and see what challenges they face which usually are interconnected. The ending of credit scenes (which I never used to watch) are very important in this regard to connect to another film).

The current glut of superhero movies is desperate stuff from Hollywood. Many mainstream studios don't seem to be interested in making meaningful films about ordinary people.

Why should they? we've had so many movies about ordinary people that superhero movies actually are some of the more original ideas.

I'd dispute the assertion that the current crop superhero movies are at the paramount of creativity. Most, if not all, are a re-imagination of a modernisation of a regurgitation of a re-hash of a re-make of a de-make of a makeover of an original idea... rebooted.

Of course there are many movies made about non-hero characters. But the question is whether these movies are meaningful in any way? The pre-eminent examples of meaningless films today would be the slew of unfunny, predictable romcoms Ć  la earlier McConaughey films which are neither romantic, nor comical (contrast the classic "Some Like It Hot" with say "Fool's Gold"). Don't get me wrong, when romcoms are great, they're great, but more often than not these days, they're woeful attempts at entertainment.

Furthermore, other genres that used to yield some excellent, thought-provoking, suspenseful, entertaining drama have been reduced to a peripheral presence on our screens: neo noir, westerns, thrillers, biopics, epics, adventure and science fiction. Fortunately these styles of film haven't completely disappeared from our screens and for every "Gigli" out there there's always the choice of watching "The Aviator" instead.

According to Forbes, the list includes Catherine Hardwick (Twilight, Red Riding Hood), Mimi Leder (Deep Impact, The Leftovers), Julie Taymor (The Tempest, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark), Karyn Kusama (Aeon Flux, Jennifer's Body), Emmy winner Michelle MacLaren (Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead), Tricia Brock (The Walking Dead, Community), and Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty, The Hurt Locker).

I hope Michelle Maclaren directs it. Her episodes in Walking Dead, Breaking Bad and GOT tend to be among the best in the series and I think she can do a great job directing a super hero movie.

I agree with Forza.
These superhero movies are nothing but for the prospect of making big bucks cuz they have a fanbase which they can count on and most people generally just seem to love big action packed explosion movies.

We've had many movies about ordinary people. But there can still be made so many others of them. I mean, I get lots of ideas sometimes. You can just take the simple premise of one movie, and then add better detail and more thought provoking storytelling to it and then you got quite a good movie.

I cringe at the people (family and friends) I live around, because all them like simple movies like your average comedy - Horrible Bosses, and car chases and big explosions - Transformers. While I like movies that are thought provoking, packs emotion, and makes me think about life - Prisoners, Gravity, 12 Years a Slave.

The other day I rewatched Prisoners again with my grandfather, aunt and her boyfriend. My grandpa got up 20 minutes into the movie, came back 40 minutes later and asked if this movie had gotten any colour to it.

So you cringe at people who like mainstream entertaining movies? That's the most utterly pretentious thing I've heard in this thread. It's really not cool in any way to degrade others in their way of valuing the entertainment they like. Movies are first and foremost a medium of entertainment, and sorry but nothing has entertained me more this year than superhero movies. Don't get me wrong I love a good indie thriller or drama. But there always needs to be variation in the output of movies. I don't think the blockbuster slate has ever been better than it's going to be in the next years.

And of course it's to make money, superhero movies are sure bets because everyone likes them. And they are so much fun to watch, the best escapism out there. And escapism is the reason almost all people I know go the cinema .

If anything have ruined the selection of movies, it's not superheromovies as it's the Oscars. Every film that thinks it's got a chance to win an Oscar is released in the last 3 months of the year. Which makes it look like there aren't any great movies in the year as a whole. Despite what people think there is actually a really great selection of movies every year. Blockbusters gives the viewers a great way to spend time until the great films come out in october. I don't really see the problem, as long as they're good.
What's my favourite movies of all time? Taxi Driver, Dog Day Afternoon, The Godfather 1-2 etc. Do I want more movies of that caliber? sure. Do I want only movies of those genres? Hell no, I want variation, a type of movie depending on the mood I'm in at the given time. There's also so many great indies out there for you who dislike the big movies, just got to look for them: In Your Eyes (2014) Blue Ruin (2013) etc. When those movies can be as great as they are with a tiny budget, I wouldn't want them to get the 200m$ budgets, because they don't need them. The only movies that need that kind of dough to be great are superhero based films.

At the end of the day there are good movies and bad movies. The only way you can have a say in what you want to watch, is if you go to *bleep* cinema and pay to watch it. Instead of whining about the current selection and then download the oscar films when you get home.

Yes, people who only like average mainstream movies and don't like movies which get 90% + on RT, yeah I seem to not get them.

I didn't say I don't like mainstream movies, lol, did you read my Need for Speed review sometime ago??
I just love the type of movies which I talked about MORE and I would love for MORE of them to be made and not to die out to superhero movies or average mainstream film. I have no problem with a movie being big and mainstream and all hyped about, but then it should be good at least.

And just to clarify, my general annoyance is about what I said in the beginning of this post (1st paragraph)

Think it's a teaser not a trailer. They showed it in SDCC but it wasn't public and they are going to do that quick since Marvel released AOU teaser.

Good choice. Doctor Strange is really not a known superhero so they need someone famous to get people to go to the theaters. Cumberbatch has a massive cult following.

They did the same with The Incredible Hulk. They wanted Ruffalo from the beginning but realized he was an unknown quantity at the time so went with Norton.
