Ancelotti pre match:
Carlo Ancelotti spoke to the press just over 24 hours ahead of the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16. The Italian coach, who confirmed that “Bale will start”, assessed the upcoming match against Schalke 04: “In order to win here we have to give it our all. We have to play with a lot of intensity because Schalke will try everything in their power to beat us. It is a team with a lot of very talented young players like Draxler and Mayer as well as very experienced players like Huntelaar and Boateng. While they are not spectacular, they are solid, work as a team and possess quality”.
“I am here to do as well as possible in all the competitions. This competition is the most important in the world and the toughest because you also need luck to win it. We are motivated to do as well as we can and the team is playing well. At the moment things are going well, but all the matches are dangerous. We don't want this good streak to end and we have to continue as we are”.
The return of Cristiano Ronaldo
“Cristiano is especially motivated. He is itching to play and has trained very well during this period. He has rested just enough and trained just enough. He is in prime physical and mental condition at the moment. It won't be a head-to-head battle between the two, but we have to keep an eye on Huntelaar because he is dangerous in attack”.
"The full backs will have to wait until tomorrow because I still have to think about who is best for this match. On the left hand side it will definitely either be Coentrão or Marcelo as they have both recovered well”.
Future in the competition
“Reaching the semi-finals isn't easy, even less so for the third year straight. The team was working well but something went wrong. We are motivated and eager to improve on how the club did last year”.
Prediction:
Schalke 0-1 Real Madrid

Re: Champions League: Real Madrid vs Schalke discussion
Full squad and Modric/Marcelo rested. bring 'em on
Schalke lost 6-0 in total against Chelsea. Now I know they are in good form at the moment but so are we. Should be a cracking game
Hope we keep a clean sheet and break the germany curse once and for all
predicting a 2-0 victory in our favour

Definitely out:Yohan Modric wrote:Injuries/Suspensions:
Schalke -
- Dennis Aogo (LB, ruptured ACL)
- Jan Kirchhoff (DM, ligament damage)
- Marco Höger (DM, ruptured ACL)
- Christian Clemens (RW, inflammation of the pubic bone)
Hopefully fit for the match:
- Benedikt Höwedes (CB, muscle tear) is questionable. He did one full training session, and might play, but possibly not the full match.
- Atsuto Uchida (RB, muscle tear) is questionable, but he definitely wants to play
- Julian Draxler (LW) just returned from a muscle tear and might play for part of the match, but he still lacks some fitness.
- Roman Neustädter (DM) just returned from a knee contusion; he should be okay though

Lots of muscle and ligament problems.. i smell mistraining/overtraining. Coaches need to take note that not all football players are olympic middle distance runners...
I'm really nervous about this game... we suck ass in germany

Re: Champions League: Real Madrid vs Schalke discussion
Well, IIRC some of the ACL stuff just happened by players simply taking a wrong step and similar stupid stuff. The muscle tears partly might have been due to the fact that the players had to play more than they should and at least two were caused by fouls from opponent players, IIRC.

Re: Champions League: Real Madrid vs Schalke discussion
Thanks rwo
Schalke seem to have quite a few injuries, mostly to the defensive players. Can see us capitalising on this. We just need to keep it tight at the back against the likes of Mayer/Draxler/Huntelaar/Farfan/Boateng and we are good.

Nice.
Was actually looking for top scorer in all competitions, but couldn't find a stat for that.

Re: Champions League: Real Madrid vs Schalke discussion
For some reason, for the Bundesliga you mainly find the stats separated in BL, DFB-Pokal and if applicable EL / CL. Maybe that's because here only the top scorer of the BL gets a special prize, the "Torjägerkanone" (="goal hunter cannon"), while goals outside of the BL are of no interest.Yohan Modric wrote:Was actually looking for top scorer in all competitions, but couldn't find a stat for that.
(Probably that's why Gerd Müller was so surprised when Messi broke one of his records over all competitions and he was informed about this - no one here actually realized that there was such a record for Gerd Müller, although everybody knows his BL and NT records XD)

Re: Champions League: Real Madrid vs Schalke discussion
Records are meant to be broken.
There are two possible outcomes for this match, all which would end in a victory for madrid.
1
Schalke's confidence being further boosted by madrid's poor german record and then coming out all guns blazing, with madrid hitting them on The counter at least twice.
2
Showing too much respect(fear) to madrid with madrid dominating possession and splitting their defense.
Ronaldo to score at least one
Benzema to score
Bale to score
Di maria to assist

Re: Champions League: Real Madrid vs Schalke discussion
can't say i expected this. schalke have been owned...i expected them to play a tight defensive game, taking into account the lack of talent they have in comparison to our warriors; but alas....that said, brilliant play from our players....at 5 nil we should not overwork ourselves...we've got atleti on the weekend

Re: Champions League: Real Madrid vs Schalke discussion
props to schalke fans, they sang and cheered their team on from beginning to end. at the bernabeau on the other hand, when the team is not soing so well, you see images of people walking out even before the game is far from over...example, against barcelona (the 2-6 and 0-3 with ronaldinho), against liverpool, even against alcorcon....i feel our fans can learn a lot from how schalke fans carried themselves and their team today, despite the result

Re: Champions League: Real Madrid vs Schalke discussion
Too early for that. I hope we get Olympiacos in the Quarters and Chelsea/Gala (if both make it) in the Semis. Let Barca and Bayern fight it out between them in the quarters/semis.
The most important thing is that we are defending very well atm. Because if we fail to score we must be able to not concede, that said too many golazos are being scored against us need to quickly close down all shot oppurtunities from outside the box
So did we need Ozil after all??? Alot more hardworkers in this team and players who can play the full 90 mins in high intensity

Re: Champions League: Real Madrid vs Schalke discussion
We don't need Ozil, but if we did have him I'm sure more scoring opportunities would be created, however he's not vital.
In terms of defending, we have definitely improved compared to previous years, but I'm still a bit sceptical. Schalke could have scored yesterday and also there's been chances in previous games that teams have missed. Like against Elche there was that 1v1. Obviously it's impossible to completely not allow any shots, but yeh...
If we want to improve further defensively, we could press more tightly/more narrow and higher up the pitch.
I'm not sure if it's Ancelotti telling the team to sit back at times and not press aggressively, or whether the team just need more time to get used to pressing/defending in a certain way.

Re: Champions League: Real Madrid vs Schalke discussion
Carlo Ancelotti appeared before the press the day before the second leg of their Champions League last sixteen clash against Schalke 04.
The Italian manager confirmed that “Jesé, Morata and Cristiano Ronaldo will start” up front and analysed tomorrow's game in the Santiago Bernabéu: “The team is fine and playing well against Schalke is the best way to prepare for the Clásico. We are excited and keen to play well because it is a Champions League match and we must maintain the team's good form”.
“We have to respect the opposition and the competition. We will make some changes because Saturday's match was hard work and we have to recover properly. Some players will be tired tomorrow and will therefore not play”.
Jesé, Morata and Cristiano Ronaldo will start
“Jesé will start, as will Morata and Cristiano Ronaldo. Jesé is lucky to be with me here today because my first appearance before the press in the European Cup was at 30 years of age”.
Isco's position
“If I don't change my mind, Isco will play. He has to get used to that position, above all the defensive side of it, and we are training in that position. Both he and I are confident he can do well there”.
“IT IS THE MOST COMPLETE SQUAD I HAVE TRAINED”.
“It is difficult to compare because I have had some quality squads, but I am very happy because here I have a little of everything: experience, youth, quality, character and personality. It is the most complete squad in that sense”.
Sunday's Clásico
“I have always thought that Barcelona is a strong team. Everyone thinks that and they have sorted out the problems they had when they did not win certain matches. It will be a very balanced game”.
Benzema's injury
“He can't play tomorrow, but he is recovering and we are confident that he will be back for Sunday. He is a very important player, as he is playing very well but he picked up a knock and we are going to wait for him to recover. We are lucky to be able to replace him if he can't play”.
His future
“It is a difficult question to answer. I am very happy to be here and doing so well. Managers always depend on results, that is normal in football nowadays”.
The closest title: La Liga, the cup or the Champions League
“In La Liga we have a small advantage that we do not have in the Copa del Rey or the Champions League”.

Real Madrid have scored in each of their last 32 Champions League games, the longest run in the history of the competition.
