EPL performers in recent years Empty EPL performers in recent years

I have a bit of a question for you guys.

Sometimes it's good to put things in perspective to get a wider view of things and not to get caught up in a moment. Like that Thierry Henry thread which served as a reminder to me of how unique of a player he was for the past decade and even longer.

So thinking about it, it's fair to say that currently the better and most consistent performer in EPL has been Luis Suarez. I was thinking about an individual player, CF more precisely, last having such dominant performances for his team, and the closest in mind was RVP's last season at Arsenal

Hype is a fickle thing, makes you believe that some players are better than they are, so thinking back, how does this Luis suarez season, stack up against what RVP did two seasons ago in your opinion?

Oh little typo there, yeah, obviously the best season of his career, he was in his prime, still is tbh, with the only difference that he has had to deal with injuries this year again.

Well Henry was simply unplayable for long stretches of his time at Arsenal. He was also recognized as a true talisman to that team as well. Are we honestly ready to say that RVP in his last season at Arsenal and Suarez currently for Liverpool are at that level?

I'm really not sure they were/are tbh. Suarez is closer for obvious reasons this season, but Liverpool have done well without him too. I don't think we could say the same of Arsenal without prime-Henry or RVP in that final season.

Sorry, but as much as I like Fabregas as a player, he was nowhere near Henry, Ronaldo, Bale + Suarez levels, even when he was at his best.

An exceptional talent but one you wouldn't fear at anhywhere near the level that you would the aforementioned players.

The most dominating performances I have seen since Henry era are by these guys

Ronaldo at United
Fabregas at Arsenal
Drogba at Chelsea
Suarez at Liverpool
RVP at Arsenal
RVP at United.

It's safe to say none of these performances match that of Henry and the closest are Drogba and Ronaldo followed closely by Fabregas. I am not biased against RVP but Fabregas' at Arsenal consistently carried us to much much more than RVP did in his last season. So i rate his time with us higher than RVP's but RVP in his Title winning season did a lot more at United.

To compare all of that to Suarez. Suarez will fall in the RVP category of where he took us to 4th IF Liverpool finish 4th. IF Liverpool win the title or finish top 3 then he would have surpassed RVP's Arsenal dominated season.

If Pool win the title, Suarez's contribution would be as close to Henry. Directly contributing to Liverpool's first league title in the PL would be a ridiculous achievement.

Strictly in the PL alone, Henry back in the day was "unplayable" because most of the weaker teams did not know how to defend against Arsenal or left themselves vulnerable to a counter attack.

Teams have improved and learned how to soak up Arsenal pressure since then.

Gerrard doesn't. He had a fantastic spell under Benitez, but before and after he's been forgettable.

First of all Torres' 33 goal season is quickly forgotten. But the guy was the best ST in the world and took us to the CL semis with only a Riise own goal on the 94th minute away from making the final. That season he racks up with anything anyone else has produced since Henry.

Gerrard was majestic in 2005-06 and 2008-09. Stevie was easily the best player in the league in 2008-09. Saddest part was he only started like 25 games in the league that season. Him and Torres started something ridiculous like 14-15 times together that season. A couple of more games could've meant the title. Sad

Suarez - 2013/14
RVP - 2011/12
Gerrard - 2008/09
Torres - 2007/08
Drogba - 2009/10
CR7 - 2007-08
Rooney - 2009/10
Lampard - 2009/10
Fabregas - 2007/08

Probably to a lesser extent Bale's contribution last season and Aguero's in 2011/12.

Torres' high goal rate was excellent, but as the OP pointed out, Henry had a ridiculously high goal AND assist rate. He was literally complete in that regard in his prime. I don't consider Torres to ever have been on that level. It's not really his fault as he isn't that type of player, but the fact that Henry was is what made him so much more dominant.

Closest player I can think of with that type of influence is probably Gerrard and/or Lampard...Lampard especially due to his unusually high scoring rate for a midfielder, but still managed to keep it consistent with his assisting.

Bale achieved nothing.

Drogba dominated the league more than Rooney in 09/10

Rooney got injured after the Bayern game. Before that he was ridiculous. Was carrying United like Ronaldo did.

Spurs was 1 point away from 4th. It was all Bale especially in the 2nd half of the season.

2001-02: 33 matches, 24 goals, 18 assists
2002-03: 37 matches, 24 goals, 35 assists
2003-04: 37 matches, 30 goals, 18 assists
2004-05: 32 matches, 25 goals, 24 assists
2005-06: 32 matches, 27 goals, 15 assists
2006-07: 17 matches, 10 goals, 8 assists

I remember Gerrard being ridiculous in 08/09 - but maybe others remember it less dramatically.

Overall I think the league has changed, and football on the whole has changed. Go back to the time when Henry scored and assisted what he did and check the stats. The invincible scored 73, goals in total, Arsenal last year scored 74. It's tough for me to even remember who the hell was striking for Arsenal last year, yet, they outscored a team with Henry, Bergkamp et al.

It's not just about statistics, but more a general shift. Lets just say if a player wants to score thirty today, it's a heck of a lot easier than it was when Henry did it. Don't know if it's that managers have begun to think that depending on one guy is the solution, or if defence in general is less emphasized, or attackers got better. Or a combination of all three.

RVN 2002-2003

Guy was a juggernaut that season, literally put United on his back and scored every pivotal goal and was the best player on the pitch in the most crucial games.
