The Top 5 nutmeg specialists
in the history of the game
5.- George Best
4.- Ronaldinho Gaucho
3.- Diego Maradona
2.- Lionel Messi
1.- Juan Roman Riquelme
The all-time nutmeg specialist has to be Juan Roman Riquelme, this man even performed one without having the need to touch the ball.
There aren’t players like Roman in football anymore, he was the perfect example of cadence inside a football pitch.
There are many that we can choose from his repertoire, but we’ll keep the one we told you about and one he did backwards during a Copa Libertadores match.
We miss players like Juan Roman Riquelme, they are the ones who made this sport even more magical than it already is.

The Top 5 nutmeg specialists
in the history of the game
5.- George Best
- Spoiler:
- The new generation doesn’t know much about Northern Irishman George Best, the ones who had the pleasure of reading about him and study are fortunate.
As part of that historic Manchester United squad from the ’60s, Best was the most talented baller in the world during that period.
Pele was considered the best back then, but Best was the low-key conjurer who always left the fans with a yummy aftertaste.
In regards to nutmegs, the fans in English football from that era will tell you that Georgie was the absolute best.
There is one that is often mentioned above the many he performed, which was against Johan Cruyff himself during a Northern Ireland vs Netherlands match.
Sadly, there is no video of the moment but there are plenty of stories that describe it.
4.- Ronaldinho Gaucho
- Spoiler:
- The Brazilian star was the top player in the world during the early ‘2000s, one of his favorite moves was the nutmeg.
He performed it in many different variations and he was always the smartest man on the pitch.
During his prime at FC Barcelona, there was no player who could be considered as talented as he was.
And we even dare say that he is arguably the most talented who ever lived, it’s sad his prime only lasted for three years.
We don’t even want to imagine the type of world we would experience if Ronaldinho played at his best throughout his whole career.
3.- Diego Maradona
- Spoiler:
- There are countless tales of the wonders that Diego Maradona did throughout his whole career, the man never backed down from a chance to perform a nutmeg.
In fact, this is exactly how Diego presented himself to the world at Argentinos Juniors.
Right before coming on the pitch when he was still a teenager, the manager told him to get a nutmeg in when he got inside.
This was the very first thing he did, it happened with the first ball that he touched as a professional.
And the rest is history. There isn’t much else that we can say about Diego Maradona’s conjuring talent.
2.- Lionel Messi
- Spoiler:
- The most recent nutmeg specialist is also from Argentina, this skill is very common in this South American country.
Messi is often revered as a genius for the things he does on the pitch every three days.
However, the fans get especially excited when he performs a nutmeg or two.
He’s already done some damage against opponents this season, but he does it too many times to keep count.
We will never forget Pep Guardiola from the stands at a Barcelona vs Manchester City Champions League match, his reaction describes what we all feel when Leo does a nutmeg.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Juan Roman Riquelme
Former Argentina international Juan Roman Riquelme is arguably the best passer of the ball in football history. The 41-year-old had a brief stint with Barcelona in the early 2000, but never really got the chance to play at another elite club.
This, however, does not negate his greatness at all. As an attacking midfielder, he possessed everything a team needed to break down stubborn defences. Talk of a deft touch, quick thinking, extraordinary passing ability and an eye for goal. Very few players really come close to Riquelme in this regard.
In his prime, Riquelme not only dazzled with his intelligent passing, he demonstrated grace, flair, and elegance anytime he was on the pitch. He read the game so well he always knew exactly when to anticipate, take an extra touch or two, before threading an outstanding pass. For his greatness, many consider the Argentine to be the ‘last true no.10’ in the game.

Top 10 most skilled passers
in football history
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Cesc Fabregas
- Spoiler:
- Spain international Cesc Fabregas is undoubtedly one of the best passers of the ball in football history. The 32-year-old has established himself as a reliable presence in the middle of the park and has demonstrated his artistic ability wherever he has played.
Fabregas had his passing ability from developing at Barcelona, after which he joined the Arsenal youth team. The Spaniard made his professional debut for the Gunners in the 2004/2005 season and has gone on to become a modern great.
Whether it was Arsenal, Barcelona or the Spain national team, the midfielder, in his prime, totally dominated play and his passing has never been in doubt. His numbers when it comes to assists are also phenomenal. Fabregas boasts great technique, ball control and vision and his abundant talent is the reason why he will retire having won league titles in Spain and England, the World Cup and the Euros.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Mesut Ozil
- Spoiler:
- Just like Fabregas, Mesut Ozil is also one of the most creative midfield enforcers in the world. The former Germany international may currently be struggling at Arsenal, but his legacy as a great passer will never be in doubt.
Ozil’s rise to the top of football was very swift – from Schalke O4 in 2006 to Real Madrid in 2010, via Werder Bremen. While has was still a fledgling young midfielder in the Bundesliga, the 31- year-old took his game to another level when he joined Real Madrid.
Despite playing in Jose Mourinho’s defensive unit, Ozil became the Blancos’ main catalyst for goals, often setting up most of Cristiano Ronaldo’s goals. At Arsenal, his creativity and passing ability brought three FA Cup titles, while he was also a key member of the Germany squad that won the World Cup in 2014.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Andrea Pirlo
- Spoiler:
- Talk about artistry in football and very few players come close to Andrea Pirlo. In a career that spanned over two decades, the midfielder won it all at club and international level. The FIFA World Cup, the Champions League, Serie A – he won them all.
However, it was his master performances in the middle of the park that endeared him to many football fans. Pirlo wasn’t your ordinary midfielder – he had the ability and foresight to pick a pass from anywhere on the pitch.
The former Italy international could play short, long and through passes with perfection. Most importantly, his vision and quick thinking ensured that he always made those around him better. Even in the twilight of his career, Pirlo was by far the best midfielder in Italy until he departed Juventus to play in the Major League Soccer.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Paul Scholes
- Spoiler:
- England as a country has never been known to produce great passers of the ball… until a certain Paul Scholes surfaced. The diminutive midfielder was part of Manchester United’s Class of ’92 and became the soul of the Red Devils for more than two decades.
It is not for any reason that other midfielders rate him so highly in world football. Scholes’ passing ability was completely out of this world and, in his prime, he could rip defences apart with a pass from his own half. This he did many, many times for England and Man United.
When Spanish maestro Xavi retired, the midfielder quickly pointed out that one of his regrets remains never playing with Scholes. Also in a 2011 interview, Xavi described the Englishman as “the best midfielder I have seen.” Those words are self-explanatory.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Johan Cruyff
- Spoiler:
- You may have heard of Johan Cruyff’s impact in bringing to life ‘Total Football’ at Ajax and Barcelona. Even before Pep Guardiola began to imprint his possessive football, Cryuff had already succeeded in implementing it, both as a player and as a coach.
The Dutchman is mostly remembered as a fantastic revolutionary manager, but tales of his playing days are rarely told. What many people do not know is that Cryuff was one of the best playmakers in the game during his playing days.
He had goals in him but his passing ability was also impeccable. Cryuff was the main driving force during Ajax’s golden generation, leading the club to multiple Eredivisie titles as well as the European Cup. The Dutchman’s philosophy has always been centered on great passing and he himself did it to perfection while was a player.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Xavi Hernandez
- Spoiler:
- Very few footballers can claim to boast the passing ability of Xavi Hernandez. In fact, despite all the respect accorded to the Spaniard, there are those who still believe his talents have not been appreciated enough.
The 39-year-old plays the same way as compatriot Andres Iniesta, but slightly edges his former Barcelona teammate when it comes passing from the back. While Iniesta loves to operate in an advanced role, Xavi is more of the type who dictates play from deep and also boasts the ability to pick out a teammate with a long pass.
It is unfortunate that the Champions League winner never won the Ballon d’Or, as he redefined passing whenever he donned the Spain and Barcelona jerseys. In helping La Roja win the World Cup in 2010, no team’s midfield got the better of Xavi throughout the tournament. The Spaniard is well and truly a special talent.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Roberto Baggio
- Spoiler:
- For the sheer number of goals that Roberto Baggio scored in his career, many consider him as an out-and-out striker. However, the Italian often played as an attacking midfielder and never hesitated to exhibit his great passing ability.
Baggio is considered one of Italy’s greatest players ever, not just because of his goals, but also because he mastered the art of creating them. His vision, creativity and accurate crossing meant he accrued many assists during his illustrious career.
He was a world class playmaker and he always came to the party in the big games. Despite his knack for goals, Baggio ended his career with an astonishing 123 assists in the Serie A. Michel Platini once described him as a “9 and half” due to his ability to score and also to pick out a teammate with the perfect pass.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Lionel Messi
- Spoiler:
- What else is there to say about Lionel Messi? The Barcelona star has done it all in football and continues to break record upon record. At this stage, the Argentine magician has become his own standard, as there is nothing more for him to prove.
For a player who has scored over 600 goals for club and country, it is very easy to dwell on just his goals. However, Messi is more than just a scorer. In fact, the 32-year-old boats great passing ability and does it with very little effort.
Messi does not only possess the vision to spot a teammate, he can actually locate his colleagues with the most precise pass you’d ever see. Last season, he scored more goals than any other player in Europe and, intriguingly, no player had more assists than him, too. You don’t achieve such a feat when you are not a great passer. Now you understand why some believe the six-time FIFA Best Player is the greatest of all time.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Michael Laudrup
- Spoiler:
- Just like Lionel Messi and Roberto Baggio, Michael Laudrup wasn’t just about scoring the goals. The Dane made his name with Lazio, Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid, and his great passing ability is one of the reasons why he succeeded at all the aforementioned clubs.
As an attacking midfielder, Laudrup was skillful and elegant in possession. He was so technically gifted that he could play across all positions in midfield, even occasionally being deployed as a deep-lying playmaker. It is no coincidence that Raul Gonzales described Laudrup as the greatest player he has played with.
Vision, good technique, balance and ball control – Laudrup had it all, and his ability to play a perfectly-weighted pass set him apart from others. He introduced the croqueta, a skill which involves moving the ball quickly from one foot to the other, before finding a teammate.

Juan Roman Riquelme, number 10 (1995-02, 2007-):
Only in Boca,
and only for this remarkable playmaker,
could Diego Maradona be relegated to second fiddle.
In the Bombonera however it is Roman who rules the roost over the best player ever to step on a football pitch. Blessed with incredible control and vision and a right foot that seems trained to find a teammate no matter how unlikely the pass,
Riquelme was voted the greatest player of Boca’s history in a recent poll.

Former Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla may have played for the Gunners
and the Spain national team,
but it is a former Villarreal teammate
whom is the best he ever shared a dressing room with.
Cazorla was also part of the Spain squad
that dominated the international scene,
winning the European Championship in 2008 and 2012. However, he missed their World Cup success in 2010 with a back injury.
Yet it wasn't any of his Gunners
or national teammates
that included Xavi and Andres Iniesta
that stood out to Cazorla.
"A different player, who won games on his own and I am lucky to have played with him."

- Spoiler:
- Santi Cazorla says Juan Roman Riquelme is the best player
he has ever shared a dressing room with.
The former Arsenal midfielder played alongside Riquelme at Villarreal - the club he rejoined when the Spaniard left the Emirates Stadium in 2018 after six years in England.
Cazorla was also part of the Spain squad
that dominated the international scene,
winning the European Championship in 2008 and 2012. However, he missed their World Cup success in 2010 with a back injury.
Yet it wasn't any of his Gunners

that stood out to Cazorla.
- Spoiler:
- "I have played with very good players throughout my career in both Villarreal, Arsenal and national team, but for me Roman has been the best ever," the 35-year-old told Marca.
"A different player, who won games on his own and I am lucky to have played with him."
- Spoiler:
- Cazorla is the top scoring midfielder in La Liga this season with eight goals, helping Villarreal to eighth in the table.
Yet he is still some way off the highest scoring campaign set by a midfield player at the club - which was fittingly Riquelme in 2004/05, when the Argentine netted 17 times.
At the time, Cazorla was just beginning his career with the Yellow Submarine.
"I didn't know (Riquelme had the record)," he continues. "That was my first real season in the first team.
"There is time to try and reach that. I have to say that Roman writes to me a lot lately and that he is very happy for me, that I am doing well and are scoring goals."

Good day to you, Hans.
I wonder why modern argentina coaches
(year 1998 and above)
always made very bad decisions,
one after another.

Top 10 Football Skills Tricks and
Who Invented Them
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Maradona Turn
- Spoiler:
The Maradona Turn is something every young kid practices because it is usable whilst mucking around in the park.
There aren't many opportunities to use this in a game, but it represents one of the most popular moves in the sport.
The video shows a Maradona turn executed perfectly in a high-pressure game situation.
Cruyff Turn
- Spoiler:
Pure brilliance!
Every time I try this, I fall over. Standard.
It's tough to perform this without clipping the ball on your standing leg, but with practice it is another move that can be used practically in a match.
Ronaldinho Gaucho Snake
- Spoiler:
The snake or 'Elastico' is an incredibly difficult move to pull off. It's perhaps the hardest in football.
A few players may have performed the move before Ronaldinho, such as Rivelino or Zinedine Zidane, but the current Flamengo play-maker has utilised it more than anyone else.
There's no shortage of evidence, as the featured video will offer you plenty of examples. Trying this in a game is bold.
Ferenc Puskas Pullback
- Spoiler:
Ferenc Puskas is widely regarded as the best Hungarian ever to play football and he created a move called the "Pullback V" during his time on the pitch.
The move is now commonly used with ease at all levels in association football and has become a must-have asset in a player's game.
The video featured is a tribute to the Real Madrid legend, but skip to 0:40 if you only wish to see the Pullback V in use!
Robinho Pullback
- Spoiler:
Another difficult one, but doesn't it look easy when Robinho does it?
This move works great in tight spaces, if you've got the balance and agility to match.
Scissor Kick
- Spoiler:
Who invented it?
The Peruvians, the Chileans, the Brazilians and the Italians all lay a claim to it.
Pele was the most famous player to use it and made the world sit up and notice the move.
It is one of the most difficult things to do in football considering you're off balance and upside down.
The video shows David Villa executing a bit of an acrobatic beauty for former club Valencia.
Jay-Jay Okocha and the Rainbow
- Spoiler:
There is some confusion over the inventor of the rainbow,
but Jay-Jay Okocha certainly established it in competitive football.
The featured video shows Okocha performing the rainbow early on. It also shows him performing some of the other skills mentioned in this article, so it's worth a watch.
I whole-heartedly apologise for the horrendous music the uploader chose to accompany this footage.
Step-over
- Spoiler:
Who invented the step-over?
I'm tempted to say Francesco Totti, but I'm not sure.
If anyone has perfected the over-use of step-overs, it would be Cristiano Ronaldo or Robinho.
The video shows how to confuse both the opponent and the spectator with quick feet.
Kerlon and the Seal Dribble
- Spoiler:
Not fully endorsed yet, but not exactly un-attempted, is the seal dribble.
Pretty much the sole reason Internazionale signed him, Kerlon was able to run for several yards whilst balancing the ball on his forehead, softly heading it to himself.
It got so frustrating that eventually people just started elbowing him in the head. Poor guy.
