Re: Champions League Last 16 discussion
Man U, Milan, Inter, Lyon, Spurs, CSKA, Rubin, and Valencia don't look in good shape to qualify for next season's CL.
Barring deep runs in EL by Napoli, Gala etc...I think we should be able to make it to 3rd pot provided we get to group stage. Unless there is something I'm missing.

Right now Liverpool have amassed 58.464 points in 5 seasons including this season. So this will be your total count when you are placed in the draw for next season's(14-15) CL qualifiers. And this includes 09-10 season.
Really, are you sure? I feel as though this is the rankings they used for this season.

More worried about the play off round Sep than the group stages. If we end up unseeded there, we're going to be facing a really tough team.

Excuse me for my awful English for a second here.
Co-efficients are calculated based on performances of last five seasons for the subsequent CL season.
So in this case,co-efficients of 09-10,10-11,11-12,12-13,13-14 seasons are taken into account for the upcoming 14-15 European season IN THE DRAW.
Was this clear ?

Totally forgot about Milan and United lol.
Basically Liverpool needs to be within 16-24th position in the co-efficients table to make Pot 3.

Yes the play-off is a big worry. Not only we might draw some strong team, but our key players will be returning from WC after playing (almost) ceaselessly in the league.

YAY someone still see's us as a 'big' team

Tbh the Europa league next season could well be worth watching if a few of the aforementioned names fall into it.

We were 7th just a year ago, now we are 13th and 7th place for Benfica

Not playing an European cup (even if it is Europe League ) it is really destructive

Manuel Pellegrini, City manager
Team news
Samir Nasri, making his first appearance for a month, capped his return from a medial ligament injury with the second goal against Chelsea. James Milner is suspended while Sergio Agüero misses out with a hamstring problem.
Gerardo Martino, Barcelona coach
Team news
Neymar struck against Rayo Vallecano on his comeback from a month-long absence with a right ankle injury but Martino says he will not risk him from the start unless he is ready. Xavi Hernández (calf) was left out at the weekend. Jonathan Dos Santos (knee) remains sidelined.
So far we have had a good season and we must finish in the same way – and one of our targets, of course, is to try to continue in the Champions League.
When you play against Barcelona, and big teams, you must always consider important things. But I think the most important thing is to try to be the same team that you see here every week in the Premier League. But you cannot play without considering that you have Messi and other important players [against you]; but we are not going to play just thinking of that.
I am absolutely sure the fans will enjoy this game. I also think they enjoyed it a lot when we qualified for the knockout round for the first time. But I also think the supporters are enjoying the season in the Premier League and in both cups we are playing in. But for me always very important – and I've said it before – is that the fans like the way we play. For me, I think we can have both things – to achieve important results and to play in a style that the fans enjoy.

Gerardo Martino, Barcelona coach
This could have been the final. It would have been ideal if we had met them a bit later, maybe in the last eight, because the teams are both very good and City are doing well in the league and in the cups. At the moment it is the perfect time for both teams to come into this game.
We don't have to prioritise either scoring or not conceding. Obviously, we want to maintain possession, which is what we like and what benefits us, and if that leads to us scoring a goal then all the better. City are very similar to us. They are maybe a bit more direct but they are very good at keeping possession. I think the team with less time on the ball is the team that is going to suffer the most.
I don't think Manchester City are a mini Barcelona or a mini any team, though: I think they are one of the greatest teams in the world right now. What I really like is Manchester City's diversity. They have so many different threats; they are good at set pieces, good in the air and they score a lot of goals. Obviously, for us to defend that we will have to keep possession.
For the last six seasons Barcelona have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, so the fans are used to that and they will find it difficult to understand if we don't go through. But obviously it is the tightest tie of them all. As a fan, I am sorry that [Agüero] is not playing because obviously we want to see the best players in the world – but as a coach it is one less problem for me.

On one hand, I love seeing all English teams getting raped in Europe, on the other hand, I want City/Chelsea/Arsenal to progress for our league title aspirations.
Ugh, conflict of interest

That's not conflict of interest. That's cognitive dissonance, perhaps?

I have a similar mental situation. On one hand, I want Mesut to silence all his haters, however doubtful that is if they play AMs next to him who don't make runs, on the other hand I want Bayern to completely dominate them. I'm trying to think of result that would adequately satisfy both of these mental desires.

If English teams get raped in Europe it just makes the whole league look bad and thus making Liverpool's efforts in making the top 4 no big deal. If English teams do well then it makes what Liverpool are doing very impressive but you have to deal with your rivals doing well.

I don't give a damn about the too 4 Isanzto mate. It's the title or nothing for me. So I guess our chances of winning the title increases with English sides progressing in CL and having more fixture congestion.

Nah, cognitive dissonance the experience of believing in contradictory things. Most commonly happens to religious folk who actually take the time to read their holy texts.
The term you're looking for is ambivalence.

Let's see if Neverkusen can do something at home against ZSG.

Leverkusen to keep it tight and nick a 1 - 0 win tonight.
Schalke are in good form, maybe they can surprise Real Madrid next week.
