Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
Anybody got some recommendations based on what I've been listening to recently?
Albums/mixtapes I've listened to within last couple weeks:
I generally prefer (as I do for most music) a little less mainstream and more underground. Or at least stuff that sounds a bit different from what you're going to hear on the radio (which is why I love Surf despite it not really being underground at all). I'll listen to mainstream stuff though depending, early Eminem is brilliant and I've enjoyed Kendrick's TPAB. Gambino's Because the Internet is decent but nothing outstanding imo.
Albums/mixtapes I've listened to within last couple weeks:
- CBarca Hip Hop Choices:
Eminem - Marshall Mathers
Chance the Rapper - #10Day and Acid Rapper
Nas - Illmatic
Binary Star - Masters of the Universe (fantastic album, worth checking out)
Childish Gambino - Because the Internet
Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment - Surf (favorite hip hop album I've heard so far)
Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly
Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Dessa - Badly Broken Code/Castor, The Twin/Parts of Speech
Doomtree - All Hands/False Hopes
Del the Funky Homosapien - Deltron 3030
Common Market - Tobacco Road/Common Market
Outkast - Aquemini

Well it wasn't a club, but a club night. Once every two weeks event. Went well, but we could only really do it for a year. Most of my team graduated and have now gone back to London to do their own thing. Me and one other still in Brighton, but we have decided not to continue. It's a shame because really had potential to be big, but we were not making enough money from it and it was something that needed to roll for a few years. I don't know if you have heard of ROX, but they are the biggest promotion company. They brought in artists like Snoop, Wiz Khalifa, Kid Ink, Wiley...etc couldn't compete with that...oh and Pryzm (used to be called Oceana).
The crowd at Action Bronson last night were so shit. They ruined it.

Kid Cudi - A Kid Named Cudi (by far the most favourite thing I listen to in my life, of course personal taste also has to be taken into account, but it's a lovely mix of what Cudder can do, before he went full throttle to the dark side

Born Sinner is also great, though I think Forest Hills Drive is his best.

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
He obviously does not have time to listen to dozens of albums so I put a maximum of two per rapper. Opted to go for underground over classics from Pac, Biggie, Dre as he said he likes underground a lot though I later noticed he had Illmatic from Nas so I gave him imo Nas's second best album.

Well, and I'm looking for recommendations that I may not have otherwise looked at. So the likes of Dre, Biggie, Pac are artists that are so incredibly prevalent, I'll get around to their stuff eventually. I am trying to mix in some classic stuff too (Lauryn Hill, Nas, Outkast being on there). Anyway thanks for the list, I'll add them. I heard something about Run The Jewels just the other day so I might try to get to that first.
Also spot on with not having much time. University

Nice. Masters of the Universe to me is a low key classic.
I would guess you also heard some other Del stuff like Hieroglyphics? If not get Full Circle and 3rd Eye View. His solo stuff also, Both Sides of the Brain esp.
Some stuff that came to my mind:
The Roots - Illadelph Halflife
Atmostphere - GodLovesUgly
matter of fact most of Rhyme sayers
Brother Ali - Shadows on the Sun
Brother Ali - Champion EP
Sage Francis - Personal Journals
Sage Francis - A Healthy Distrust
Living Legends - Angels with Dirty Facez
Living Legends - Classic
Murs & 9th Wonder - 316
Little Brother - The Listening
Zion-I - Mind over Matter
Elzhi solo shit.
Souls of Mischief - 93 til Infinity
Outkast - ATLiens if you haven't heard their earliest
Would recommend Cage, but he's really hit or miss with most people I think. On a strictly style comparison, similar to an early Eminem(they beefed around the SSLP days over this). I would check out Agent Orange and maybe Among the Sleep if you like those you'll like Movies For the Blind.
Hellz Winter is his later album much more milder subject matter wise, but still dope.
I'll edit when I think of more, but some more Del/Hiero:

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
Was supposed to be on Makaveli but Death Row changed the album after Pac died. Some of the other left off tracks were used on Until the End of Time.
They put a retouched version of it on Nu Mixx Klassics 2 which is pretty good for a posthumous album. The first one sucked though, they butchered some songs. I don't remember Loyal To the Game being good either, aside from 1 or 2 tracks:

Mac Miller's new album an easy contender for album of the year. A very well rounded masterpiece. He gets better with every project. He's been around forever and he is still only 23.
