I guess this is the state of the music industry, when Iggy Azalea is nominated for like 19 Grammy Awards and MMLP 2 wins over Because the Internet and Oxymoron.

Same, Gambino at his best, really found his identity on that won. BtI >> MMLP2 all day everyday but there's no one bigger than Eminem so it's not surprising.
Plus MMLP2 was decent imo. Especially when you listen to Shady XV...

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
This has probably been discussed like 1 million times but I'll ask again.
I kind of stop listening to Rap around the time 50 cent died, and my music tastes have kinda shifted elsewhere recently, totaly 180. All my mates are avid Drake fans and all dying to see him when he comes down under, I've listened to a few of his shit and don't see it. Though now days i can always play the 90's rap songs i loved back in the day and just let it go on all night.
My friends keep telling me Drake is the shit, from his popularity nowadays i'm not really surprised when they say Drake is the number 1 guy right now.
What i want to know, as I've deviated away from the rap genre, what's the difference between the old days of the gangsta rap and whatever it is now, what's changed. My mates told me drake changed the game, i don't even know how though.
Are the comparisons fair, the guy likes to think of himself as a legend of the Rap game, no doubt seems like that on the first track of his new mixtape, which seemed god awful to me(His song legend i'm referencing)
So what i really want to know is, what is Rap nowadays, whats changed since the days of Gangsta rap, Is drake as big as the guys in the 90's, what is people like Drake, wezzey and co's significance to Rap nowdays, are they as good as the old school stuff?

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
Drake is just a descendant of Biggie Smalls, he didn't change the game, he's just the most commercially successful descendant of that genre.
You have those types: Drake, Big Sean, Macklemore Juicy J, 2 Chainz
Commercial successes
Then you have the ones that actually contribute to rap without trying to make their identity radio-friendly: Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Childish Gambino (some would put J Cole here, some would put him in the other list)
If 50 Cent was your guy back in the day, you should probably try something harder than Drake if you want to get back into rap
And I wouldn't call Drake anywhere near as 'good' as Nas for instance, but he's like Jay-Z in his heyday. But with more emotional tracks. And he sings. And cries.
Try Kendrick though.

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
"Sings and cries"
He doesn't actually cry, just makes good emotional songs that many people of many ages and of both gender can vibe too.
I'm a Drake fan. I love his music really, though I've kinda grown fond to J. Cole and Kid Cudi recently, so he's not in a huge way my fav rapper/artist. His songs doesn't resemble 90s rap music at all, he is more in the vain of Kanye West really.
And lol on Wayne, Wayne is finished tbh. Never was a great rapper. But I like a few of his older stuff.
Rap has changed really. If you want gangsta rap then Schoolboy and Kendrick is probably your best bet of the guys going around. And all those underground guys like Joey Badass, etc.

I feel that Lil Wayne was a gimmick. Like you said, he wasn't a great rapper, but his distinctive voice made him stand out from the rest.

Bantz. I actually like Drake, he's talented and knows how to make a hit but he's not what I think of when someone asks me about rap.

That was pretty sad. Game Jadakiss and Styles P should probably be locked up for their respective roles in that.
Been listening to Lupe's Tetsuo and Youth and it's really solid. Mural, Prisoner1&2, Deliver, Chopper, No Scratches, a lot of good tracks.

Wayne was never a great lyricist(for the most part) but C1/C2 Wayne was a great rapper imo.

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
I think though most the successful rappers now day just seem like "Pop rap" or some shit i dunno.
Man people liek drake and all know how to make hits but, *bleep* me lyrically i think they got nothing on the old school shit. Like Pac was my fav back in the day, the guy knew how to write about real shit, some of his songs and the messages behind them were just like *bleep* me man this guys on another level.
I was listening to a interview Kendrick did though, i think he seems to be trying to replicate that sort of thing were he does try to influence people through music rather than just brag about money and bitches.

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
I pretty much "avoided" every rap song coming from the other side of the ocean because when I was in the rap stage of my musical life and was only interested in rap music I was terrible in english and never bothered to venture myself outside of italian rap, but now that I'm more comfortable with it I started listening to some rappers and I think I've fallen in love with rap again.
I've been listening mostly old school stuff because like mrr34 I'm not really fond of the "pop rap" and prefer fast paced songs with lyrics that blow you away. I've been hearing 4 tay, 2pac, eminem, Dr Dre, De La Soul, Notorious B.I.G. and while they're all great, Naughty by Nature stood out the most for me, they're unreal. I'm surprised I haven't read any mention about them here.

Some others from the 90s that if you haven't heard you should definitely check out: Nas(Illmatic is a must), Wu-Tang, Bone Thugs n Harmony, Big Pun, Big L(and Children of the Corn for that matter), Gangstarr, Jay-Z.
