Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
It was exactly nine years ago this morning that the Current first went on air and introduced itself to the Twin Cities with the help of Atmosphere’s Minnesota-centric “Say Shh.”
The song, which was tacked on as a hidden track at the end of the Rhymesayers’ duo’s 2003 album, Seven’s Travels, had already become somewhat of an underground anthem, and at 9:01 a.m. on January 24, 2005, the Current spun it as a way to establish the station’s connections to its community and celebrate an exciting new beginning.
“That morning, all the bigwigs had come up to gather around the studio. There were a lot of suits,” founding program director Steve Nelson told City Pages as part of their oral history of the Current. “We hit play on the first song, and it was a hip-hop song, which they did not expect. The look on some of the faces was just—you could see it like a thought bubble came up over their heads, ‘What have we done?’”
Fast forward nine years and both the Current and Atmosphere are still going strong. The hip-hop heavyweights have performed in the MPR studios numerous times throughout the Current’s run, and joined Chuck D on stage as part of the station’s “Fakebook” series. And the Current’s family of listeners continues to grow, culminating in two back-to-back nights of birthday parties this weekend at First Avenue.
To mark the occasion, we’re taking it back to the beginning and kicking off our ninth birthday by once again spinning “Say Shh…” at 9:01 a.m. This time, we have a special lyric video directed by Adam J. Dunn to go along with it, and you can watch it for the first time right here:

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
The Heist is not a mainstream album...it was released before his hype carried him over to the radio. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have kind of disappeared from the underground and rarely update their youtube like they used to. Macklemore seems like a genuine dude and while that is good publicity for him, I believe he meant it.

I just don't like the dude's music though. That song Thrift Shop spend weeks and weeks at number one on the billboard rap chart. I don't know how people can even call it a rap song.

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
I am just speculating here, but Thrift Shop seemed like one of those fun songs you could just get down to. I don't think Macklemore and Ryan Lewis intended on that song making it so big. I do have an issue with that song taking an award in a rap category, but that is why I steer clear from the mainstream. Nothing makes sense on radio and those award shows...stopped watching them a long time ago.

Grammy's rarely get it right as far as rap goes.

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
"My fight to go about this right with the stand means
It's more than some grand schemes to hold up a Grammy
We fightin' in a war that we can't see
My brothers and sisters in this struggle
There's no fans we family, same root and branch tree
Listen I'm amped keep your hearts warm
Mines on fire and I'm antsy
I know it's so cliche but I'm angry that some can't eat
Meanwhile I'm letting a damn feast
Of pastas and canned meats, rot in my pantry
Like, Lord please, can we speak on this frankly
Like, God why you lettin' this happen, amen
He answered son, I'm askin' you the same thing
Cause you're supposed to be my servants out there workin'
Like you're my hands reachin' out to those that's hurtin'
You don't have long on this Earth
And I hope you won't compromise, I said I hope you won't compromise"
