School cancelled today because it is -15F (-26C) right now, and -40F (-40C) wind chill.
Tomorrow it's supposed to be mostly the same

Curious, are you happy you were homeschooled or do you wish you weren't? Was the quality as good or better than at public schools? I'm pretty ignorant of homeschooling, so I'm just curious. If you could go into slight detail about what it's like or whatever, cool.

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
to be 100% honest with you. It depends on the parent and the child as to whether it is better or worse than 'regular' school. My family have done well, My sister is doing her masters degree in Chemistry, I am doing my honours degree in Geology and my brother has just been accepted into one of the most prestigious dance schools in Oceania after getting 97.2/99.5 on his final year of schooling (total marks). However, I know homeschoolers that have barely done anything and have no motivation to do anything.
I believe, if it works, it works well, such as the case of my family, however, if the Child and parent have no motivation to do well, they can skim through school learning virtually nothing. Over here we get checked once a year and as long as you have some work to show for it, you'll pass.
I was happy to be homeschooled because I hated school and this way, I could learn what I wanted, when I wanted and how I wanted.
Instead of staying in a class room all day, I often went on field trips with adult groups and learned many different things through many different sources. We could turn basically anything into a learning experience and I believe my family benefited from that. We never spent 6 hours in a class room per day but my sister and myself have both won scholarships after finishing homeschooling which shows that neither of us are less intelligent than 'regular' school kids.
My mother was often on forums finding the best material for us to study in Science, Maths and English, the subjects we studied everyday. We did about an hour of each, generally from 9am-12pm before heading out somewhere.
The other thing was that we could take holidays whenever we wanted. We never had holidays during school holidays as prices were always more expensive and it was much quieter during school weeks.
People always ask about the social aspect, (I figure you would too ) There is always homeschooler get-togethers, which could be anything from camping trips to museum visits to tenpin bowling. All of the homeschoolers in an area would go to these so I got my social interactions that way. I also have a lot of conversations with Adults as I would constantly go on field trips with them. I believe that helped me a lot with my maturity and sensibility as I could not act like a child on these trips.
Overall, I wouldn't want to go to a regular school and am quite thankful I was homeschooled, I would also homeschool my kids, given a chance and feel implementing similar methods as my mother would be successful too.

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
That's really interesting Kick. I have a friend who went to a private school up until middle school and was then home-schooled. He then did quite poorly in high school, but when you talk to him, you can tell that he's actually a pretty smart guy. I often wonder if he had personally lacked the motivation needed to get good grades in high school, which wouldn't surprise me at all since he admittedly likes people thinking that he's dumb, or if it was his home schooling experience which ruined it for him
It definitely did not hurt his ability to be social. He's one of the most popular and social guys I know. It might have had to do with speaking to more adults at a younger age but I'm not sure.

It's supposed to drop to -40C tonight here around Windsor/Essex County, traditionally the warmest place in all of Canada. Get at us m8sJuveman17 wrote:CBarca wrote:Juveman17 wrote:Going to be 10F tmrw -10F with windchill. Hopefully no school tmrw.

Homeschooling is quite different to public school, perhaps he didn't deal with the change well? Or lacked motivation.

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
Strict school is not for everybody, but education is vital. I think that there is far too much emphasis on facilities and nowhere near enough emphasis on the teachers...
The quality of the teacher really makes the difference whether it's home schooling or private/public schooling. If your teacher is apathetic, disorganised, unfriendly, unhelpful or generally incompetent, the student's grade and proficiency in the subject goes down 100000000%. It makes little difference whether the student is naturally intelligent and capable or not, because either way the student is still unable to fulfil their potential had they received high quality tuition from someone they trust. To this day the existence of such a low university entry acceptance score for teachers baffles me. Surely the people we want teaching kids should be more intelligent than that...?
Edit: That is not to say that all teachers are unintelligent, that's not at all the case.

I cannot stress this enough.
I've always had trouble with math, but my 10th grade year I had a great math teacher who was very passionate both about math and teaching and he was a cool guy too, and that was probably the only year I've ever enjoyed math. Yes, I actually enjoyed it...and I hate math! But the year after for pre-calc I had this douchey, arrogant teacher who was also very average at teaching and my math skills just...suffered. A year after in the present day I'm taking AP Calc, which is college level calc, and I'm suffering the consequences of last year. My math teacher this year isn't much better, either. The only reason I'm really taking it is because my school has no math class for a guy like me who in math is better than average, but not good enough to be with the ones who excel in math.
I've actually found math to be the subject with the majority of poor teachers. Maybe that's because of my own shortcomings, but I'm trying to look at it objectively, and math just seems to me like the most poorly taught subject. It's the easiest subject to get into the "math monkey" mode and just teach something, show a couple examples, and then assign a bunch of problems. This works, especially for students who get it right away, but it inhibits true understanding and for those that don't just "get it" right away, it's incredibly frustrating...not to mention time consuming.
Anyway, teachers make all the difference. They really do. It's astonishing.
