2013 UEFA Super Cup

The 2013 UEFA Super Cup between European Champions Bayern Munich and Europa League winners Chelsea will take place on August 30th.









This year's match will take place at the Eden Arena in Prague, the home of Czech outfit SK Slavia Prague. It is the first year since 1998 that the final will not take place in its traditional home of the Stade Louis II, the home of French club AS Monaco.











Bayern Munich qualify for the match by virtue of their 2-1 victory over Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund in last season's Champions League Final at Wembley, with a late goal from former Blue Arjen Robben sealing a 5th European Cup for the Bavarians, while Chelsea beat Portuguese heavyweights SL Benfica in the Europa League Final to book their place in this final.









There is a fair bit of animosity between the sides, not the least of which is the result of the 2012 Champions League Final, played in Bayern's own stadium, in which a late goal from Thomas Müller, which had the Bavarians practically engraving their name on the trophy with 10 minutes still to go, was cancelled out by an even later goal by Chelsea icon Didier Drogba, taking the match to extra time and, eventually, penalties, which of course culminated in the Ivorian slotting home the final spot kick to award the visitors their first ever European Cup in front of a stadium-full of Bayern supporters.








But perhaps even more grudging than the sour aftertaste of that dramatic night in Munich is the relationship between Chelsea manager José Mourinho and Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola. The two, formerly in charge of Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively, have built up something of an arch-rivalry over the years, beginning with the Portuguese's victory over Pep's Barcelona in the Champions League semifinals in 2010, in which the former's Inter beat the latter's Blaugrana 2-3 on aggregate, knocking the Spanish side out in their own backyard despite going down to 10 men 26 minutes in after an impressive 3-1 victory at the San Siro in the first leg.

Once Mourinho arrived in Spain, against the backdrop of the ancient and world-famous Real-Barca rivalry, the animus between the two only strengthened, becoming characterised by touchline antics, media mind games, and in one case, even physical assault, and their presence in opposing dugouts in this match is likely to be one of the most prominent talking points in the lead-up and aftermath of this final.












Chelsea won this trophy in 1998 under Blues legend Luca Vialli, with a solitary late goal from Gus Poyet gifting the cup to the Londoners in the Stade Louis II in Monaco against European Champions Real Madrid, then under the management of Guus Hiddink, who of course would become Chelsea manager himself just over a decade later. Bayern, alternatively, have never won this trophy.

should be correct, its like 12 15 am in SL, Australia is 4.5 hours ahead..
