Not good?! If a £40m offer ever came in it would be FANTASTIC news!

and who would you replace him with? There is a reason we've been hearing about offers of that amount of money for him.

Because people are being lured in by his so-called "potential", just as we were. 26 years old and we're still talking about his "potential" that seems to be eternally 'just around the corner'. What he actually puts out on the pitch, though, is nowhere near being worth £40m (barely even half it, in fact), and if we could get someone to pay that for him it would absolute highway robbery on our part.

Center backs peak much later than normal. It's not unusual for a CB of 28-30s to be in the best years of their career. That's what people are talking about with his potential.
We've seen glimpses of what he can do and he's improved every season. There are not many talented CB's around, let alone ones with the technical skills he has and he still has 4 years on his contract. He's a draw card for supporters as he's funny and enjoyable to watch so adds more than just to the football side of the team. He's by a country mile our most underrated player simply because the media and co love to slate him. Mark my words, in 2-3 seasons he'll be a top 5 cb in the world easily.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread - II
So you think every club in the world is drawn into his potential, yet you are smarter than Chelsea, Barca, PSG and Bayern in knowing that he won't reach it?
Or perhaps there isn't any better CB's out there so they have to pay well above his value to have a shot at him, meaning if we sell, we'll have to do the same to bring in a quality CB, or we'll be stuck playing Cahill as a starter.

Absolutely no reason whatsoever to sell Luiz. I mean, who are you replacing him with even if you wanted to sell?
There's a reason Barca & Bayern are interested. CBs like Luiz aren't common. He can fit into almost any defensive system.
With Mourinho being the gaffer, he's going to help Luiz A LOT next season. I don't know why anyone would want him gone. Its not like we need the money or he's being a cancer to the team.

Are any of these CB's who are nowhere near being world class at 26 yet supposedly magically become it by 28 completely average if not even inept 80% of the time they play?
As for his technical advantages: he's supposedly a long-ball specialist, yet in reality only about 1 or 2 out of every 10 attempts at one AT BEST actually comes off. He's lauded for his long, surging runs forward, but considering they're one of the main reasons he's so often inept at doing what it's his actual job to be doing, what's the real value in them? And he's supposedly a brilliant set-piece taker, yet in actuality the majority of them wind up in row zed.
I completely agree that he's improved since he's arrived, but he's hardly even gotten to a level worthy of the price we paid for him two and a half years ago, much less the £35m/£40m figures being throw around that people here say they would be happy to reject at a canter.
Having one truly good game every 3 months might be enough to make you lot hang on the the illusion that he's on the cusp of being world class season...after season...after season, but not me.
Is there anyone out there available right now that we could bring in even if he were sold? Probably not. And might Mourinho be the one to get turn him into a quality player? Highly possible. But we'll see.

Theres no proof that Bayern want him either, I am just saying if we believe one, why not believe them all? The price has been pretty constant anyway.

We're not 'believing' anything. At least I'm not anyway. I merely stated, under the premise of the two gossip write-ups I posted, that if an infinitely unlikely bid of £40m ever came in, the club would be mad not to accept it.

I don't believe it will happen and I believe the club wouldn't be mad to reject that bid.
I can't think of one player who would replace him.

It's 40m Euros. We have 30m Pounds more to spend if we need to anyway.
Also, who would you buy? Only players I would consider would be Howedes and maybe Vertongan.

Well we obviously just rate him differently. For me he'll become somebody like the next Lucio, one of the players Mourinho built his treble season on.

I'm going by the Fail story that says £40m. Neither is true though so it's not worth going back and forth over.

The only reason people are so eager to pretend like his glaring and numerous deficiencies don't exist is because he has big hair and acts like a 4 year old. Put his footballing abilities into, say, a Gary Cahill-type off-pitch personality and slap an English surname on him and the majority of our fanbase would want rid of him sharpish.

Not really, he gets picked on so people only look at his errors. Watch the confed cup matches, he as good as if not better than TS in almost every match yet nobody even mentions it. Somebody like Mourinho is perfect for him to work with because he won't take crap and will improve him alot imo. Cahill was woeful for us for the whole second half of the season and nobody battered an eyelid.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread - II
On the contrary, the reason he gets picked on so often(he gets way more criticism than praise from non-Chelsea fans) is because of his hair and his personality. Cahill made A LOT MORE mistakes last season than Luiz but I bet you didn't notice half of them because his personality on the pitch is under the radar, so to speak. Same goes for Terry & Ivanovic. Luiz was by far our best defender last season.Shed wrote:lszanto wrote:Well we obviously just rate him differently. And I'd like to know how much exactly Shed thinks Luiz is worth if he's not even worth £25M to him.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread - II
Probably somewhere around £18m-£20m. He's not a £25m center-half for me and he's certainly not worth £25m in a position he's played literally less than 10 games in in his entire career.

Yep, Don't believe either. We have 30m pounds left, we're not gonna buy Sami Khedira when Rooney is a possibility.
