Six New Promo Images from Darren Aronofsky's NOAH

New promo images have been released for Darren Aronofsky‘s Noah.  The adaptation will expand on the biblical tale, and take a closer look at the details of the story.  For example, while the ark is usually portrayed as a ship, in Aronofsky’s film, it’s literally an ark designed simply to withstand the flood rather than something that’s designed for travel.  As you’ll see from these images, the dress is also far rougher than the cheesy biblical version of robes and sandals.

And when it comes to the character, lead actor Russell Crowe says that this Noah isn’t a benevolent figure, but “a guy who can get the job done.”  The film also stars Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, Logan Lerman, Douglas Booth, Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, Kevin Durand, Martin Csokas, and Mark Margolis.  Noah opens March 28, 2014.

First Trailer for HELL BABY Starring Rob Corddry, Leslie Bibb

The Movie House - Part 3 - Page 7 Nboem9

Millennium Entertainment has released a trailer for the horror parody Hell Baby.  The film follows a husband (Rob Corddry) and his pregnant wife (Leslie Bibb) who move into a haunted house in a crappy New Orleans neighborhood, and then need the help of a couple Italian exorcists (writer-directors Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant) when the wife becomes possessed.   The film also stars Riki Lindhome, Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel, Keegan Michael Key, Kumail Nanjiani, and Michael Ian Black.  Hell Baby will be available on iTunes on July 25th, and hits theaters on September 6th.

Synopsis: “Hell Baby,” a comedy scripted by Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant (Night at The Museum, Reno 911!: Miami) marks their co-directing debut. Jack (Rob Corddry) and Vanessa (Leslie Bibb) are an expectant couple that moves into the most haunted fixer-upper in New Orleans — a house with a deadly demonic curse. Things soon spiral out of control for Jack and Vanessa, as well as their-not-so-helpful neighbor F’Resnel (Keegan-Michael Key), Vanessa’s friendly psychiatrist (Michael Ian Black), Vanessa’s Wiccan sister Marjorie (Riki Lindhome) and the detectives assigned to look into the rising body count (Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer). Only the Vatican’s elite exorcism team (Garant and Lennon) san save them — or can they?

Ryan Reynolds is set to star with Ben Mendelsohn in Mississippi Grind, the next film for writer/directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden. First Trailer for Sex Addict Comedy THANKS FOR SHARING

The Movie House - Part 3 - Page 7 Thanks-for-Sharing-Paltrow-Undies-Dragonlord

Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions have released the first trailer for the sex addict comedy/drama Thanks for Sharing.  Marking the directorial debut of The Kids Are All Right scribe Stuart Blumberg, the pic tells the story of three sex addicts struggling to function in normal society.  The central focus is on Mark Ruffalo, who plays an addict who’s trying to strike up a relationship with a woman who has sworn off dating other addicts (Gwyneth Paltrow).

The other main addicts include Book of Mormon star Josh Gad, Alecia Moore (aka Pink), and Tim Robbins, with Gad unsurprisingly looking like a scene-stealer.  There’s a healthy balance of comedy and drama on display in this debut trailer, and the film’s impressive ensemble cast is certainly promising. The film also stars Joely Richardson and Patrick Fugit.  Thanks for Sharing opens on September 20th.

Sony Planning CAPTAIN PLANET AND THE PLANETEERS Movie

The Movie House - Part 3 - Page 7 3cc56896-a8a9-4a7b-9fc8-40dc15d1232f

Environmental cartoon Captain Planet and the Planeteers is getting the big-screen treatment. Sony Pictures is in final negotiations to pick up the rights to the early 1990s series for an adaptation to be produced by Mark Gordon, Don Murphy and Susan Montford. The show was produced by Turner Broadcasting and DIC Entertainment, the latter known for Inspector Gadget and The Real Ghostbusters cartoon shows.

Captain Planet told the story of five teens from around the world -- North America, Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia and South America -- that are given powers by Gaia, the earth spirit, in order to protect the planet from the devastation of polluters. When their powers are not enough, the teens combine to summon a superhero named Captain Planet.

The Captain and the Planeteers fought villains such as Dr. Blight, Verminous Skumm, Duke Nukem and Looten Plunder. (The series initially attracted high-profile celebrities to play the baddies -- Sting, Meg Ryan and James Coburn among them.)

2nd Trailer for PRISONERS Starring Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal

The Movie House - Part 3 - Page 7 Prisoners-Jackman

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for director Denis Villeneuve’s (Incendies) dramatic thriller Prisoners.  The film stars Hugh Jackman as a working-class Boston father who sets out to track down the man he believes is responsible for kidnapping his daughter and her friend. Along the way, he runs up against the big city detective (Jake Gyllenhaal) assigned to the case.  While viewers were worried that the first trailer gave away the entire film, this new trailer hints that there’s much more to the pic than meets the eye.

The real draw, though, is the character-driven story and intense performances from Jackman and Gyllenhaal, not to mention cinematographer Roger Deakins’ gorgeous camera work.   The film also stars Paul Dano, Maria Bello, Terrence Howard, and Viola Davis.  Prisoners opens September 20th.

THE WORLD’S END Featurette Explores the Cornetto Trilogy

The Movie House - Part 3 - Page 7 The-Worlds-End-UK-Trailer

A new featurette for co-writer/director Edgar Wright’s new film The World’s End has been released, in which the connection between The World’s End and Wright’s Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz is explored.  World’s End completes the unofficial “Cornetto trilogy” that began with Shaun and continued with Hot Fuzz, and in this new featurette Wright and his cohorts discus how this unofficial series of films came to be.

The featurette includes interviews with a number of people that have been involved in all three films, including Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, and Wright reveals which actors from the first two films will also be appearing in the concluding chapter.  In speaking about the central theme of The World’s End as it relates to the “zombie movie” nature of Shaun and the “British take on a Michael Bay movie” spin on Hot Fuzz, Wright describes The World’s End as “a quest movie with an extremely irresponsible King Arthur at the head of it.”

The film also stars Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, Eddie Marsan, and Rosamund Pike.  The World’s End opens in the UK on July 19th and in the US on August 23rd.

2nd Trailer for James Wan’s Horror Pic THE CONJURING

The Movie House - Part 3 - Page 7 The-Conjuring-0628-Dragonlord

Director James Wan is quickly earning a reputation as a potential new master of the horror genre.  He’s come a long way since 2004’s Saw, having earned high marks for his 2011 film Insidious.  His latest pic, The Conjuring, has been garnering some positively stellar buzz, and now a new trailer has been released that teases the terror that awaits audiences. The film stars Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Lili Taylor and Ron Livingston. The Conjuring opens on July 19th.

The film is based on the story of the Perron family who inhabited a haunted Rhode Island farmhouse in the 1970s.  Lili Taylor and Ron Livingston play the Perrons, and Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson play a husband and wife team of psychic investigators who encounter the most horrifying case of their career.  This new trailer intercuts footage from the film with interviews with the real-life Perron family, making the story all the more frightening.

UK Trailer for BREATHE IN Starring Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones

The Movie House - Part 3 - Page 7 2s0bpfo

The first UK trailer for Like Crazy writer/director Drake Doremus’ new film Breathe In has been released online.  The film stars Guy Pearce as a former rock musician and current music teacher whose life begins to unravel when he develops an attraction towards a young foreign exchange student (Felicity Jones) that is staying with his family for her final semester.  The film also stars Mackenzie Davis and Kyle MacLachlan.  Breathe In opens in the UK on July 19th and will be released in the US later this year.

The pic was one screened at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and it boasts some absolutely devastating performances from the entire cast, including Amy Ryan as Pearce’s wife.  Doremus tackles the family drama genre with a powerful intimacy that makes the story’s events that much more impactful, and the always-reliable Pearce truly shines in the lead role.

Mark Wahlberg to Star in Peter Berg’s AMERICAN DESPERADO

The Movie House - Part 3 - Page 7 Mark-Wahlberg-Cap-Dragonlord-1

Though they only just finished working together on the Navy SEAL thriller Lone Survivor, director Peter Berg and actor Mark Wahlberg are already planning a reunion project.  Fresh off a new adaptation by Oscar-winning The Departed screenwriter William Monahan, Wahlberg has become attached to star in American Desperado with Berg directing.  The book is based on a series of interviews between Generation Kill author/journalist Evan Wright and super-criminal Jon Roberts, the focus of the documentary Cocaine Cowboys.

Roberts’ life story can be filed under “stranger than fiction,” as he recounts being born into Mafia royalty, running guns for the CIA, smuggling cocaine for the Medellin cartel, and brushing elbows with the likes of Richard Pryor and Jimi Hendrix.  Deadline reports that Paramount is hoping the project can come together in time to start filming as soon as early next year, but that has yet to be firmed up since Monahan’s draft only just came in.

New PACIFIC RIM Featurette Highlights the Story and Characters

The Movie House - Part 3 - Page 7 2ldub69

The marketing campaign for Guillermo del Toro’s great-looking new film Pacific Rim is about to be kicked into high gear, and as a result Warner Bros. has now released a nearly 4-minute behind-the-scenes featurette for the pic.  For those unaware and living under a rock for the past year, the story is kicked off by the emergence of monsters (known as Kaiju) who start a war that devastates humanity.  To fight back, humans build giant robots (known as Jaegers) that are controlled by two pilots.

This featurette gives a clear outline of the story and the world that del Toro and screenwriter Travis Beacham have created, and it also provides a nice behind-the-scenes look at del Toro’s process as a director and his approach to crafting the Pacific Rim universe. The film also stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Clifton Collins Jr., Max Martini, and Rob Kazinsky.  Pacific Rim opens in 3D on July 12th.

New Trailer for The Coen Brothers’ INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS

The Movie House - Part 3 - Page 7 X2vr5l

CBS Films has released a new trailer for The Coen Brothers‘ new film, Inside Llewyn Davis.  The film takes place during the 1961 Greenwich Village folk scene, and follows a week in the life of frustrated musician Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac). The trailer features the melancholy tone of Oscar Isaac and Marcus Mumford‘s cover of “Fare Thee Well”  (the song will be available on the soundtrack that comes out September 17th).  The film premiered to rave reviews at Cannes earlier this year. The film also stars Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Garrett Hedlund, and John Goodman.  Inside Llewyn Davis opens December 6th.

Synopsis: INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS follows a week in the life of a young folk singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961. Guitar in tow, huddled against the unforgiving New York winter, he is struggling to make it as a musician against seemingly insurmountable obstacles—some of them of his own making.

Scott Mendelson wrote:'Pacific Rim' And How Box Office Tracking Becomes A Weapon

Here’s a shocker for you: Two weeks prior to release, a wholly original science-fiction action-fantasy with no major stars and a somewhat goofy concept is tracking for a lower opening weekend than the star-laden comedy sequel to a general audience-pleasing and financially successful original opening on the same day.

The reports of “doom” being leveled at Warner Bros.’ $180 million monsters vs. robots epic Pacific Rim may be indeed accurate.

The Guillermo del Toro ode to Japanese monster movies is “tracking” at around $30 million for the weekend, which would indeed be a little underwhelming. Grown Ups 2: The Grown Upping is tracking at around $40 million for the weekend, which makes sense since Adam Sandler and friends’ Grown Ups opened at $40.5 million back in June 2010. I know, next you’ll tell me that The To-Do List has less awareness than The Wolverine a month out from their July 26th release date.

What we have here is a classic example of pre-release tracking being used as an offensive weapon against a film to create the impression of upcoming box office failure, with the end-game goal of creating what amounts to a self-fulfilling prophecy. Back in the olden days before movie news was a general-audiences entertainment, pre-release tracking was relatively secret, and it was used as a way to measure the effectiveness of a marketing campaign and/or possibly signal where and how additional marketing dollars should be spent.

If, and I’m making this all up, Spider-Man wasn’t tracking as well with women, Sony would cut an ad highlighting the romantic drama between Mary Jane and Peter Parker and air it during the Oprah Winfrey Show and/or Friends. But now that said information is out in the open, the tracking figures become a weapon both for a flop-happy media and for rival studios. I’ve written about this before, but this is such a classic example that it bears repeating.

Hidden in the middle of Variety’s “Is Pacific Rim Doomed to Be This Year’s Battleship?” piece is the fact that Warner Bros. has only spent 30% of their marketing budget thus far. This is actually a wonderful thing to hear. I’ve long argued at the pointlessness of these insanely expensive long-lead marketing campaigns, with copious trailers, clips, and posters designed mostly to capture the interest of hardcore film fans who already bought their midnight IMAX ticket as soon as it was available.

Warner Bros. is holding most of its marketing money for the last couple weeks, which makes sense since most general moviegoers don’t really care about what’s coming out months from now. Even with the social media that seemingly surrounds every single living soul, there is still a large percentage of moviegoers that still choose to see a new release because that trailer they saw in front of Man Of Steel looks good or they liked the TV spot that aired during the NBA finals the night before opening day. So when Del Toro takes to the Internet to reassure fans that the tracking numbers are going up, that’s probably true since Warner Bros. hasn’t exactly been spreading awareness.

If I may put on my conspiratorial hat for a moment, I don’t think this is a coincidence considering the ongoing discussions for producer Legendary Pictures (which funded 75% of the film’s $180-$200 million budget) to align itself with a studio other than Warner Bros (talks to re-up their distribution deal broke down last week). If Pacific Rim tanks, then the asking price for whatever studio chooses to align itself with Legendary Pictures goes down. Heck, all of this talk of doom makes the theoretical price go down too, while the pressure to close a deal with a studio before Pacific Rim debuts rises in case the film becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

But putting aside the reasons for what feels like a preemptive strike, Pacific Rim doesn’t have much awareness because Warner Bros. hasn’t had the time to focus on it. With Man Of Steel taken care of following a successful domestic and overseas launch, and The Hangover 3 and The Great Gatsby wrapping up their successful theatrical runs (both films cost around $105 million and made well over $300 million worldwide), WB now has two weeks to sell the heck out of giant robots doing battle with giant monsters.

I wrote back in April that Pacific Rim‘s fortunes were somewhat tied to the relative quality and/or audience satisfaction of the summer slate up to that point. And, at this point in time, it still looks like Pacific Rim, if it’s as good as I’m hearing from those who have seen it, may well be ‘the one we’ve been waiting for’ in the vein of Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, Transformers, and Inception.

But either way, trashing the future box office performance of a major release where most of its advertising budget hasn’t been spent yet is both silly and counter-productive. It’s also the kind of preemptive strike that dissuades original would-be blockbusters, since audience awareness is always going to be higher in the early going for known entities and/or sequels. Pacific Rim may well tank domestically and may even tank overseas (although I’d argue the latter is highly unlikely), but no good comes from screaming *flop!* before the campaign has really begun, especially as Warner Bros. marketing actually waiting until it matters should be encouraged.

Pre-release tracking was supposed to be a tool to help studios market a film to the best of their ability, but in the last few years it has become, like test screenings in the late 1990′s, a weapon for use by rival studios and/or a knives-out media to preemptively proclaim failure before the race has even begun.

I'm very excited... I love everything Del Toro does, and the trailers make this look interesting. It'll be entertaining at its worst case scenario, not sure why more people aren't interested.

We'll see if I can get anyone to go with me though.

I'd rather you keep going, I'd never have known about Blue Jasmine or Prince Avalanche unless you posted in here, and I'm looking forward greatly to both movies.

2nd Theatrical Trailer for DreamWorks’ TURBO Starring Ryan Reynolds

The Movie House - Part 3 - Page 7 Turbo-Quad-Poster-Dragonlord

A new theatrical trailer for DreamWorks Animation’s Turbo is now available.  The story tells the tale of the title character, an ordinary garden snail who has one simple wish: to go really, really fast.  This new trailer features a surprising role for Ken Jeong as he lends his voice to a tiny cranky woman.  The snail tale features the voices of Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz and Michael Bell.  Turbo opens July 17th.

From the makers of Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda, Turbo is a high-velocity 3D comedy about an underdog snail who kicks into overdrive when he miraculously attains the power of super-speed. But after making fast friends with a crew of streetwise, tricked-out es-car-goes, Turbo learns that no one succeeds on their own. So he puts his heart and shell on the line to help his pals achieve their dreams, before Turbo-charging his own impossible dream: winning the Indy 500.

Full Trailer for DELIVERY MAN Starring Vince Vaughn, Chris Pratt

The Movie House - Part 3 - Page 7 2mp03e8

DreamWorks Pictures has released the full theatrical trailer for the upcoming comedy Delivery Man.  The film is a remake of director Ken Scott’s 2011 Canadian hit Starbuck and stars Vince Vaughn as a sperm donor who ends up being the biological father to 533 kids due to a mix up at the clinic.  Those kids are now suing to find out his identity.  This new trailer delves deeper into the film’s plot, as we see that Vaughn’s character eventually tries to act as a “guardian angel” to the fatherless children, trying to help them through their problems anonymously.

Scott directs this remake of his own film, and the pic is very much being marketed as a family film as opposed to a straightforward comedy.  Chris Pratt (and future A-list Hollywood leading man. Right, Xion385?) is unsurprisingly on point here.  The film also stars Cobie Smulders and Britt Robertson.  Delivery Man opens on November 22nd.
