Re: Need PC help
use chkdsk to see if you have bad sectors. If there are bad sectors, the program will try to fix it.
You have can tell if a hard disk is going bad by doing a speed check. If your external drive is hooked via USB 2, the transfer speeds max out at 30 mb/s. Try coping a pretty big video file and see if it gets to between 25-30 mb/s on average. If it doesn't get to those speeds, your hard disk is dying and there's not much you can do about it. It's just a matter of time. I'd stop using it.

Re: Need PC help
Oh really so should I get Windows 7 or whatever the newest one is? Also what other programs would I have to get? And where?
Also sports I'm positive it's dying since It has been progressively slowing down and I have tried multiple programs to see if I could fix it some how but they never worked.

Re: Need PC help
For programs you can get an anti-virus/spyware, Microsoft Office etc. However they're not essential for Windows to work.

Re: Need PC help
Ok so does it matter what type of Windows version I get? And where can I purchase it?
Re: Need PC help
Doesn't really matter, but I think it's best to get Windows 7 or 8 to keep up with the latest updates etc I guess.
They can be purchased online.

Re: Need PC help
Ok so this is the one that I currently have on my PC that I will purchase:
http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Premium-64bit-System-Builder/dp/B004Q0PT3I/ref=sr_1_1?s=software&ie=UTF8&qid=1376064127&sr=1-1&keywords=windows+7+home+premium+64+bit
In regards to hard drives, I am looking to get another Western Digital one.
The one I currently have on my computer is 1 TB SATA- III 6.0 gb/s 64MB Cache 7200RPM HDD
Any different hard drives you would recommend getting? Kepp in mind this PC is around 2-3 years old and the hard drive has already slowed considerably. Should I look to change brands?

Your saying if i dont want alot of gb's? Im looking for a 1 TB hard drive. And what is an SSD?Butt wrote:If you don't alot of GB's i would recommend you get a SSD, alot faster and future proof
Re: Need PC help
First question: Is this for a laptop or a desktop?
Second questiion: If it's a desktop, are there any extra SATA plug in spots available? If no SATA, do you have an extra PCI-E slot?
If it's a laptop, you have to go external. But if you have desktop with any expansion room, i highly suggest you get an internal hard drive . SSD means "solid state drive" and makes a regular hard drive look like a dinosaur. The way i'd do it is get a 120go SSD and have your operating system run off of that and use the regular hard drive to store files and media. The SSD will cost a little less than $100.

Re: Need PC help
if i were u i will get new hard drive and install windows 7 or 8.. and also making sure that when u get new hard drive making sure ur using PETA or SATA... PETA hard drive has long cables connected. SATA has like small cable connectors.
then connect both hard drives but boot with new hard drive, then scan the old drive with antivirus, making sure doesnt cause any danger when u want old backup tarnsferred to new hard drive.

Re: Need PC help
If you're getting a new hard drive and you're going to use that for the operating system, i'd unplug the old one for now and get the operating system installed on the new hard drive. Avoids confusion by the BIOS. After you've successfully installed the OS, then plug the second HD back in. Now, if both hardrives have a OS, the BIOS will ask you to pick a hard drive when you start your computer. Pick the new one (mine is menu and you just highlight the drive and press enter). Then you can go ahead and format your old drive once you're in your windows environment and the BIOS option will go away.
For $100, i highly, highly recommend you get a 120go SSD drive. That's how much they cost. Make sure the SATA cable to plug it into your computer is a SATA 3 cable. SATA 3 cables get you speeds of 6 mb/s while SATA 2 is only 3 mb/s.... so it's double the speed and doesn't cost more for the cable (less than $10).
I highly recommend putting your media and other non-program files on the second hard drive. You want to separate the two in case something gets corrupted or you catch a virus... you don't want everything to get effected.
Just me. No expert. But i just built my first computer and did a lot of research. Fresh in my mind .

Re: Need PC help
To move all the files connect both hard drives to a PC and copy paste from one to the other.
To scan the hard drive use AVG, which has a free edition.

Re: Need PC help
Not gonna lie sports that really confuses me alot I'm no PC expert Idk if I will do that since I already bought an external hard drive. Are there any other hard drives I should look at?
And Yohan I moved all my files of my current hardrive to an external hard drive. And for AVG is there an option that specifically allows you to scan a hard drive?
