It had to be Biden, somebody had to finally pull the plug on this mess and nobody was willing to do it because they knew exactly this would be happen.
Withdrawal had no alternatives long term. The issue is the way USA went on about it. Instead of a step by step withdrawal and giving Afghan forces/institutions more and more responsibility over time, they just wanted to vanish over night.
Wouldn't have made any differences one way or another, The Afghan army simply didn't want to fight Taliban.
There was no other options, you can't expect American forces to stay indefinitely and babysit ANA for eternity.

Pretty much this
It’s easy to throw the blame at the US and yes there are imperialist warmongers in charge of our country quite a few times too many
But the afghans had 20 years to work to build a functioning government like other countries in the region ala Turkey, Israel..
They didn’t do shit and the elite pocketed the money
Algeria has the curse of oil, natural gas, and the French still controlling the country and yet PEACEFUL protests against a brutal regime have been going on for two years. And this is after a horrible, bloody civil war and revolution. We keep, fucking, trying. You don’t ever give up. I just don’t see that same energy within the Afghan people. Sorry.

Re: Taliban to Start Talks With U.S. and Afghan Government
You're comparing apples and oranges Fennec. The Afghan history is very unique and the circumstances very different. It's not about giving up. It's been a "buffer state" forever and victimized by wars between superpowers for centuries. It's one thing "not to give up" since the mid-1800s.... this has been going on since the 12th century for Afghanistan and, given the fact that its strategic location, it's never been left to its own devices for very long. So they don't have something to "go back to". That's always been the problem...
In any case, we absolutely owe it to the people that helped us and the women of Afghanistan the make sure they are treated humanely. It's unconscionable to just leave them to get slaughtered, raped and tortured.

So your position is that we should stay in Afghanistan indefinitely?

You're comment is off topic and stupid. The other option was Trump. I'm ecstatic with my choice. But that isn't relevant to the topic. Troll somewhere else.

I'm 25, so I could only vote 7 years ago, which makes my first vote the 2014 midterms and my first presidential vote the 2016 election. My first vote was for Hillary fkn Clinton.

Re: Taliban to Start Talks With U.S. and Afghan Government
When we combine each element of the picture; the helpless white girl, the black beard standing behind her, and the headline “what could happen when the Taliban retake control”, I think the insinuation is clearly a racialised sexual slavery/forced marriages.
Of course, sexual slavery probably is going to have a good year in 2021 and beyond in Afghanistan, but it’s ‘interesting’ that they chose to illustrate this with these racial dynamics, despite that girls that look like that ARE a minority in Afghanistan.
Now perhaps females with lighter features in afghanistan are especially endangered by brown terrorists, but do you want to open that can of worms friendo?

No. My position is that we leave in an orderly fashion while coordinating with all of our allies. Not arbitrarily and haphazardly, causing immeasurable pain and suffering + creating a brand new generation of extremists that hate us + eroding our political equity in the world.
The ship has sailed though with all these though and more. We fucked this up royally.
As a good friend of mine in France said: America isn't trustable and nobody will ever trust them again. It's all about "America First"... doesn't matter if it's coming from republicans or democrats. At least the republicans aren't hypocrites about it.

If you're going somewhere with these digs at our political system, post in the US Politics thread.
We'd happily reply there and debate on why your takes on this are.....not great.
Otherwise, please keep your responses relevant to this topic.

The problem is there’s no real solution. Just like you said; they’ve been doing this for centuries. Afghanistan has always been a country of tribes that have nothing to do with each other.
This problem started when we entered Afghanistan; we should’ve never gotten involved but someone has to pay the military industrial complex bill every year. I just don’t understand how we can leave in a “humane” way.. so it’s our responsibility to babysit these people to not slaughter each other? I really don’t get it. Don’t want to be governed by savages? Fix your country. Don’t let it happen.

Re: Taliban to Start Talks With U.S. and Afghan Government
I'm thinking USA is going to support the local IS to make the makeshift taliban government implode. As of now, the taliban are a loose union of tribes with VERY different views of how Afghanistan should go on from now on. A civil war is certain. It's in the US interest though to destabilise the region as much as possible to make it a pain in the **** for China. IS isn't going to stop at China's borders unlike the taliban. Talibans or Afghans in general never had a beef with China or vice versa. They've been living peacefully alongside each other for millenia.

Yeah if you're not willing to fix the country yourself then no outside influence will help you. We all know how hard it is to help a person that doesnt want to be helped let alone 40mil people in the middle east
Just watch American troops training Afghan men. Its like a The Office reunion

Re: Taliban to Start Talks With U.S. and Afghan Government
“We have already seen Taliban fighters armed with US-made weapons they seized from the Afghan forces. This poses a significant threat to the US and our allies," US Congressman, Republican Michael McCaul told Reuters. His fellow Republican and Congressman Jim Banks, who had served in Afghanistan, said in Washington that the hasty US withdrawal leaves Taliban in possession of more than $85 billion worth of military equipment.
The supplies and stores with the Taliban now “includes 75,000 vehicles, over 200 airplanes and helicopters, and over 600,000 small arms and light weapons. The Taliban now has more Black Hawk helicopters than 85 per cent of the countries in the world. They don’t just have weapons. They also have night-vision goggles, body armour, medical supplies," Banks said.

Who in their right mind thought this was a good idea to leave so much equipment with the afghan army. They couldnt foresee anything, with the capitulation and the taliban seizing this gear?
