96% sure I won't get the DLC or play the game again. Will probably play FFX remastered soon though.

Useless magic?? that was the most op thing about the game!
Its makes everything waaaaaaay easier in the main game, and its the best (only?) way to break the damage limit in the post game.

Didn't know you hadn't played X, get that remaster ASAP. Now that is one hell of a journey. Top game in the series.

Re: The Official Final Fantasy thread
Thats the GOAT story in the series imo. Its a bit heavy on the grinding for the postgame but other than that its pretty great at everything.
Postgame is huge and the gap between story enemies and super bosses is immense so it takes some time to build up (you'll probably beat the game without the ability to break 9999 damage but for the toughest bosses you need to break it and max it to 99999), once it does though its great.
The main game is great from start to finish.

Re: The Official Final Fantasy thread
IDK. I did all the hunts post game besides that one because it literally one shot my entire team every attack.
I just used one of the meals that increased crit attacks and the best greatsword I had then watched youtube videos, took me 50 mins to defeat Adamantoise and I was definitely not maximizing my damage potential
such a low difficulty fight you can easily watch a movie or TV while doing it lol

I know I only got 1 summon during Adamantoise, Ramuh and it basically didn't scratch it lol

Re: The Official Final Fantasy thread
FF X is definitely behind the PS1 era Final Fantasy games on my list of best Final Fantasy games. It had far better graphics than it's predecessors, and I liked the game overall, but I was not a fan of Meg Ryan's sister, Tidus and I haven't been a fan of the main characters in any of the PS2/PS3 Final Fantasy games. Tidus and Vaan are both whiny, beta male crybabies (in my opinion). Granted, the rest of the cast are a lot more charming than him.
The soundtrack was pretty good as I recall, playing blitzball was fun, and defeating the "dark" versions of each summon after having obtained whatever it is that removes the damage cap on your characters, felt like a nice addition to the end-game. Unlocking summons felt rewarding, since you had to complete puzzles (albeit easy ones) and defeat the summons themselves, each time.
Story-wise, it was the first step in the direction that the franchise has taken in recent time. I think the story was pretty decent, but it was predictable, not very original, and I definitely didn't enjoy it as much as I enjoyed that of FF 7-9. The villains didn't interest me at all. The graphics was groundbreaking back then, and that was a huge plus. There were definitely things I was disappointed by, initially, but the game introduced many positive features that were absent in previous instalments of the series.
FF X is the only post PS1 era game that didn't make me wish it would end before it was over (bar FF XV).. so, there's that It's a good game, but for me, it also marks the end of the darker atmosphere and, in my opinion, significantly more creative storytelling of the older games - and pretty much everything else that made the Final Fantasy games different from other RPGs (in my opinion).

Re: The Official Final Fantasy thread
Fair opinion @Thimmy . My favorite is IX, but I'd say it definitely has a more predictable story than X. Same for VIII and pretty much all the old FFs except for VII. X for sure was much more somber and darker than all the other old ones for me.
GOAT game for me.
- heavy FFX spoilers:
It always seemed like one of the most creative and somber stories in the series.
The whole starting in a dream world of the past, getting launched into the real world without knowing whats going on. Following the pilgrimage to uncover the corruption of the world and how they are all hopelessly reliving the same cycle of death. Switching it up and going against the religion itself to find that the "prophet" engineered the whole thing to punish the world and perpetuate himself by having them kill Sin a certain way. Scarifying yourself and finding out that Auron was dead all along, etc.
GOAT game for me.

Re: The Official Final Fantasy thread
The ending wasn't predictable at all but the whole story wasn't as inspired at X, VII or IX imo. Nothing too "different" happens for most of the game in terms of story. Its mostly a witch wrecking the world and you battling through it.
Great execution but nothing groundbreaking in terms of story in an RPG for me.

What about FF X was dark, in your opinion? I mean, it's only after you complete the game that you realize how dark the plot is, but the actual journey through the game was anything but dark, from what I recall. Every time I hear about the game, I picture the almighty adventurer in the image below being on the brink of crying about.. something.
I don't think FF VIII and FF IX had predictable or unoriginal stories at all, unless you just boil it down to good vs evil/save the world. Both games also had great atmospheres. The unique settings and circumstances regarding the plot, make those two games great. I don't know why Squeenix moved away from side characters like Vivi. I don't know about you, but I think he was potentially a far more interesting character than X, Y and Z in every game since then. I remember reading that the developers behind FF VIII stated that it was the most experimental game in the series and they were afraid it was going to flop for that reason, and so I think it's safe to say that they certainly didn't intend for it be considered as mainstream as the more modern games in the franchise.

They were worried that nothing would match the success of FF7. And it was true because FF7 was a revolutionary game. Changed the video game industry. However imo FF8 was even better.

Re: The Official Final Fantasy thread
FF8 is probably my favourite, as well. For me, that game was just far more immersive and atmospheric than FF10. I loved the art style, the mix of different influences in aesthetics, the background stories for side characters, and the music really amplified the atmosphere of every setting. It's all about preference, though. I know some people think FF8 is the worst in the series. Too emo, uninteresting main character etc etc. I've noticed that Rincon likes the FF games that I enjoyed the least, which is probably because he either appreciates the things that I dislike in those games, or because my disliking of those things prevented me from thoroughly enjoying them

Re: The Official Final Fantasy thread
FF8 is my personal favourite as well because of how incredible the world was and the characters. The constant switch to past and present was 10/10. And the story kept you guessing. The transition of Squall from a cold hearted pos to caring about Rinoa and the world was brilliantly done. That orphanage scene from the past is still fresh in my head lol
And the ending. It broke me ffs. Couldn't stop thinking about it for weeks.
HEAVY SPOILERS. LITERALLY HEAVY SPOILERS

Re: The Official Final Fantasy thread
@Thimmy its in the spoiler tag
- FFX spoilers:
- The whole game (FFX) is much darker than anything but the second half of IX. From point 1 to the end you are told that everyone must keeps their heads down and that all towns live in constant fear. You have Tidus' internal monologues all the time narrating how messed up the whole thing and how little sense it makes for an outsider. Everyone lives without hope except for a short peace and then back to getting wrecked by Sin for decades. All citizens are against technology which is what perpetuates their punishment.
All the knowledgeable NPCs and villains keep talking about the "spiral of death", the world itself is named Spira for this. The souls of the death gather around and become the monsters you fight. The main character's existence is a burden on the Faith. Auron is dead. The whole premise of the quest is the pilgrimage which will result in Yuna's death, which they all accept.
From town to town all you hear are the people's loss because of Sin. You see everyone getting destroyed when they attempt to fight him with machines. You have a whole race of people exiled to the desert because of religion (Al Bhed). You have one race commit genocide on another and completely kill them all except for Khimari and the blitzball team (Guado on the Ronso). Then you have them destroy and try to wipe out another race (the Al Bhed). You discover that the goverment itself knows its all futile but goes on with the pilgrimage to give people some hope and peace and that the ruler is a undeath.
The whole sacrifice thing with Seymour's mom becoming Anima. Tidus' dad pulling him to Spira so that he can be killed by him. You actually go to the Farplane to speak to the dead.
Much, much darker than any other final fantasy. Thats the whole theme as Tidus keeps trying to understand it and rationalize these things until they get to Zanarkand. Where he decides that it just can't be and tries to break the system. There was nothing whiny about him except his tone of voice.

This was the brilliant part of VIII for me. Its a shame because the whole time I had no idea who Laguna and why I should care at all about this, so that part was a drag. Then the ending came and it was brilliant, my favorite part of the game but you dont get to enjoy on a first playthrough.

Also everyone in the world but that pos Firenze have played VII so I won't spoil it, but everything to do with Cloud, Sephiroth, Zack, Hojo and SOLDIER is pretty messed up relative to other games.
