Suck them in with high wages, make it extremely difficult for them to leave because they become accustomed to the wages and nobody who needs the player will pay anything close to what he gets.

However, if his wages are meh and the transfer fee was average, this is just a move I can't explain.

Meanwhile rich clubs pay 20-40M for any half decent player who's had a breakout season for a half-decent/overachieving club.

Like I've said, taking into account all the things I listed, I'd want a damn sight more than 25M. Why should a top club selling a key player not get OTT prices compared to just about every other club who has recently done business with the latest handful of Mega rich clubs.
