He's at near Neukem level at age 19... not really outrageous.

Bayern were deceived, really.

The ammount of goalkeeping talent RWO Germany has at her disposal is incredible.

Maybe we should set up a Bavarian NT (with the Bayern players) and a Prussian NT (where the "Borussen" go)... Very Happy

For the France friendly on Feb 29th, Manuel Neuer and Tim Wiese got nominated by Löw. But it looks as if both Marc-André ter Stegen and Bernd Leno will be busy, too. They are both in the U21 squad that was nominated by Rainer Adrion for the U21 EC qualification match against Greece. It is still undecided who of the two will play, though.

The U21 atm has a luxury problem at the GK position with Oliver Baumann, Kevin Trapp, Bernd Leno and Marc-André ter Stegen.

Looks like there is a bit movement in the GK market atm.

Rene Adler finally returned onto the pitch yesterday to keep the goal of Bayer II against Bochum II in the German Regionalliga (4th tier). The match was lost 1:3, but Adler was the MotM nonetheless. It is still not clear whether he will go to the HSV after his contract in Leverkusen runs out in June 2012.

Tim Wiese is leaving Werder Bremen after the Season, but his destination is not known yet. Wiese's wage demands for extending the contract were higher than Werder's budget allowed, so he will be a free agent now. On the other hand, there are substantial rumours that Kevin Trapp (Kaiserslautern and Germany U21 NT keeper) will not extend his contract at Kaiserslautern, but instead move to Werder this summer.

I was really taken by Butt's classy farewell match, too. The guy still has it in him - I wonder if they keep him in the list of active players, just in case. I think he'd still be a more than capable emergency back-up, even when starting to work as coach.

Hm... About the Champions League medal - I think it would be "I'd be really happy for him to get a CL medal". Dunno if one can translate the "jemandem etwas gönnen" in a more literal way. And you are right - I'd be really happy for him to get one, too Very Happy

Germany have the most great keepers right mow, closely followed by Italy. Germany have Neuer, Adler, Wiese, Rensing, Ter Stegen, Leno, Weidenfeller, Zieler, Kraft etc. Italy have Buffon, Viviano, Sirigu, Abbiati, De Sanctia, Storari, etc. Aftet these 2 tho theres a biggap to third place. Historically too Italy and Germa y have always had the best keepers. Maier, Kahn, Lehmann, Zoff, Buffon, Peruzzi, etc.

Apparently the verb I was looking for was to begrudge . Gotta hand it to Butt though. Man finished his career with a bang @ Bayern Smile Got himself some titles and scored another penalty against Juventus xD

Hm. IIRC "I don't begrudge s.o. sth" has slightly different connotations than the German "jmd etw gönnen" - the latter is inherently more positive IMO. But then, that's just my feeling about the expression.

sometimes a simple nice word is the hardest of punishments.

So what's so special about German goalkeepers, and why are they best in every generation? Is it their physique and build, the winning mentality or both and more?

Well, in my first post in this thread I commented on the fact that it seems that in Germany the GK training is possibly a bit different from that in for example England - at least it was that way in the past.

The current crop of German GKs certainly are trained to be able to play the ball with the feet, so they can more or less stand in as sweepers, if need be.

The drawback of that is that it can look silly when an attacker gets past them while they are far out of their goal, but often dangerous situations are already deflected by such anticipatory moves. IMO that is one of the things where Neuer is pretty good.

I think it comes down to the tradition of current greats inspiring youngsters which has become a never ending cycle amplified by the German Youth system kicking into high gear.
