As Joachim Löw called-up René Adler for the Netherlands friendly this Wednesday, he was interviewed in Amsterdam and talked about his feelings that he was back with the NT after two very hard years.

I think this merits a bump with the current kicker ranking of the GKs playing in the Bndesliga:

As I didn't find the old post where I stated my appreciation for Fortuna Düsseldorf's goalkeeper Fabian Giefer, I decided that I really should do so again, this time in the appropriate thread.

Fabian Giefer

Club: Fortuna Düsseldorf
Squad No: #1
Position: Goalkeeper
Age: 22
Birth Date: 17 May 1990
Birth Place: Adenau, Germany
Height: 1.96m (6' 5'')
Weight: 93 kg
Foot: right
Market value: 2 500 000 €
Contract until 30 June 2014

Fabian Giefer is just another of the numerous German top class goalkeepers of this generation. Just like René Adler and Bernd Leno he comes from Bayer Leverkusen's excellent youth academy and was originally asked by Bayern München to sign as Nr.2 behind Manuel Neuer. Fabian Giefer turned down the lucrative offer and opted for the Nr.1 spot at freshly promoted Fortuna Düsseldorf, a decision he certainly didn't regret.

Kevin Trapp was great this season. He'd have been the U21 Nr.1 if he hadn't broken his hand.

Whenever I watch Leno he makes awful mistakes. Even at U21 level he didn't cover himself in glory at all last summer at the Euros. Surprised he's always rated this highly.

Well, despite one or the other error he makes, his anticipation is great. Bernd Leno often manages to deflect dangerous situation before they really become dangerous. The drawback in this approach is 1. mistakes usually look very stupid, thus stay in memory longer and 2. he doesn't get into making numerous spectacular saves, so it doesn't really look as if he had to do any difficult saves.

rwo, I'm sure someone must have asked you this already but how do you see ter Stegen fitting at Barca? A transfer seems imminent.

Well, Marc-André ter Stegen is GK who is mature beyond his years, can play very good with his feet (which is more or less mandatory at Barcelona) and he is reported to have studied Spanish for a while now. I think Barca don't make a mistake signing him. I just hope that MAtS will feel comfortable abroad as so far he only played in M'gladbach (sind early youth, that is).

(And if this transfer goes through, it is very likely that Lucien Favre will go for Yann Sommer as replacement, which I would highly welcome ^^)

Manuel Neuer was voted World's Best Keeper 2013 by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).

The Top 5:
1. Manuel Neuer (FC Bayern München) - 211 points
2. Gigi Buffon (Juventus Turin) - 78 points
3. Petr Cech (FC Chelsea) - 64 points
4. Thibaut Courtois (Atletico Madrid)
5. Victor Valdes (FC Barcelona)

In earlier years, Oliver Kahn (1999, 2001, 2002) and Andreas Köpke (1996) were elected World's Best Keeper by the IFFHS, too.

Neuer is priceless, says Hoeness

The 62-year-old FCB supremo has hailed the shot stopper's outstanding form in 2013-14 and is impressed with his abilities on the ball

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has voiced his admiration of Manuel Neuer in the wake of his superb performance in the 2-0 Champions League win over Arsenal on Wednesday evening.

The Germany international kept out a Mesut Ozil penalty early in the game as well as making several fine saves to keep Bayern on level terms, while also impressing on the ball with his accurate passing, and Hoeness has nothing but praise for the 27-year-old.

"What Neuer is doing is absolutely top notch. He has been priceless," Hoeness was quoted as saying by Bild.

"We are using our goalkeeper as an outfield player. Some people seem to forget that. It's a matter of time before he is playing in our opponents' half.

"The defenders can always pass the ball back to Manuel. He can pass the ball on to a team-mate perfectly with both his right and his left foot."

Neuer has kept 22 clean sheets in 35 official appearances for Bayern in 2013-14.
Not only Playmaker-Goalkeeper, but soon Striker-Goalkeeper?

Looks like some goalies might not get so happy with their transfers this season.

German Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread - Page 6 Giefer10

Fabian Giefer
who went to FC Schalke 04 as he was certain he might become Nr.1 there right away now faces quite a contest with last season's number 1 Ralf Fährmann who managed to excel with top performances.

German Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread - Page 6 Miele10

Similarly, Sebastian Mielitz, who was pushed to the bench by Raphael Wolf at Werder Bremen, decided to go to SC Freiburg who just lost their Nr.1 Oliver Baumann to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. But he now faces stiff competition by the Nr.3 of the Swiss Nati, Roman Bürki, who is quite a bit better than Mielitz, who didn't exactly convince at Werder.

German Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread - Page 6 Ter-st10

And last, but not least, Marc-André ter Stegen probably didn't think that Barcelona might decide to buy high-profile Chilean NT keeper Claudio Bravo who is already used to the Spanish league, speaks Spanish and had the chance to impress at the World Cup.

It will be sad to see Marc-André ter Stegen on the bench all time and not progressing after all the promises he has shown earllier in his career. I expected him to become better than Neuer in near future Sad

Well, it is always a risk to go to a big club, and with only 22 years of age, Marc-André ter Stegen probably should have opted to stay at BMG a year or two longer to establish himself in the German NT being a definite starter in the Gladbach team.

*If* (which is not 100% sure, of course) he is benched at Barcelona, he will likely also risk a place in the German NT as there are several more strong German GKs around who have a secure starting spot in their clubs.

I always wonder whether it HAS to be some emotive trance electro pop with these kinds of videos.
While we're watching 4 minutes of a goalkeeper receiving backpasses and passing them to the side/hoofing upfront, wouldn't some kind of digeridoo drone or some easy listening muzak be more appropriate? Herb Alpert, if we insist on quality?

Also, the main modus of Barca's defenders nowadays of dealing with pressure, however slight, seems to be to pass the ball back to the goalie for him to hoof it upfield Razz
