Studies have shown that most marketer have heard of the product life cycle concept but dont use it. Why? Many times, products seem to skip stages and the classic life-cycle pattern does not apply. Does this mean that it has no practical application? Could it be misrepresentative, or is it a good guideline for a marketing stratergy?

Thinking about picking up some economics books this summer just to dabble in it.

I'm curious as to what you have to say on the subject, given you know what you're talking about.

It’s useful in reference to some product, so for example the fad version of the PLC is very accurate, as would be the style on assuming the firm can put out an infinite number of successful products for an undetermined period of time. Although as for the traditional one i posted above, id say it holds some level of truth, most particularly in the first three stages, although limiting the maturity stage to a similar length to introduction and growth is quite myopic imo as it fails to take into account the maturity stage of "irreplaceable products" ie bed sheets which could arguably continue in perpetuity.
