David Moyes comes to mind.
But I think Pellegrini takes it.

Montella, Spalletti, Pellegrini could all be at bigger clubs.

Lol Milan suddenly not a top team.
But then that opens the door for Allegri to be nominated.

Re: Best coach of a non top team?
Thomas Tuchel of Mainz IMHO
Arq praised Armin Veh of Frankfurt, but TBH I'll wait another season, I wasn't convinced in the past.
Lucien Favre of Borussia Mönchengladbach is doing a great job, as well as
Mirko Slomka, Hannover 96.
Also someone who is criminally underrated:
Holger Stanislawski. Came to FC Köln mid-season and since then they skyrocketed upward in the 2nd flight.
They'll probably only just miss promotion - had they signed Stani earlier, they would've made it. They can technically still do it if they win twice, and FCK loses twice. Anyway, prime coaching sauce from Stanislawski.

C'mon now, his Augsburg was stuff of near legend, which is why I even bear watching them as 1 of my 3 watched BuLi teams. His reutlingen of early decade even better. Erase Wolfsburg and Hamburg from your mind. And Stuttgart (despite playing awesome footy with them) because you know...they are Stuttgart. But he was great with them, for me.
He has evolved very well and finally found a flexible club to allow his...somewhat unorthadox tactics which is a joy to watch.
I'm surprised you mentioned Stani as no one does around here. I'll choose to erase Hoffenheim stint since not even der general can succeed there.
Tuchel probably my favourite of the bunch and is just brimming with talent, innovation and ideas. I expect a lot from this man.
Don't forget to mention Streich, or Weisinger who has made Nuremburg actually watch-able.
On-Topic: In no particular order
Bielsa
Pellegrini
Allegri
Montanier
Christian Gourcuff
Rudi Garcia
Vincenzo Montella
AvB
Guidolin
Rafa Benitez
Wenger
Spaletti
Mazzari
Pepe Mel
Unai Emery
Ok so I was supposed to name one...if I had to choose from all?
Max Allegri.

Re: Best coach of a non top team?
Michael Laudrup - Hes made bunch of average players into a very decent and well balanced team, and made the bargain signing of the season in michu, and has done with swansea what wengers failed to do arsenal for 8 years, win a trophy, very impressive .
Roberto Martinez - even if they dont stay up, no matter how bad they are, you cant say wigan arent entertaining and unpredictable .
Sam Allardyce - I despise him but you cant argue with the fact that irrespective of the teams he is in charge of, he gets results . He is the quintessential premier league manager .
Murat Yakin - I really enjoyed watching Basel against Tottenham and Chelsea . They played a very effetive counter attacking game . I think Yakin is a very decent coach who i wont be surprised to see manage in one of the big leagues soon .
Diego Simeone - He is getting the team fulfill its potential, bravo
Philippe Montainer - He is on the verge of qualifying for the top 4 in spain, incredible . This was a club that was relegated not so long ago .

Re: Best coach of a non top team?
Mirko Slomka and Vincenzo Montella are the best in my opinion. Also a big fan of Holger Stanislowski as well from Koln. But Viva, he actually has been at Koln all season. The first half of the season was just bad because they were still coping with the loss of Podolski who they were so overreliant on last season. In the second half of the season, Koln has really developed a great understanding with each other, playing much more attacking, nice foot all instead of grinding defensively style, and Cristian Clemens has also exploded in the second half of the season and really taken up the mantle as Koln's go-to guy.

Re: Best coach of a non top team?
Philippe Montanier :- nothing to add to what everyone has said. La Real are easily the most attractive side in La Liga. His big test, which could make or break him comes next year in UCL.
Manuel Pellegrini:- The Engineer again proved his credentials as a Master at building modest squads into contenders. Reacted to losing his best player by taking debutants Màlaga to UCL Qtrs. Classy bloke too.
Diego Simeone:- guaranteed UCL place next seasn, Copa final yet to come, amazing home record and even better defence, the prodigal son has definetly delivered.
Special Mention:- Ernesto Valverade: just look at Valencia before and after him

Re: Best coach of a non top team?
Pelle
I'll mention Cristopher Galtier of St Etienne. Watched them a bit this season - don't even know why - just happened - and the way he organizes the team is fantastic. It's notthing revolutionary - jjust a balance of counterattacking and poseession football (They don't have the attacking talent to really pull this off - but they do it so that they can manage the tempo and not have to defense 24/7). They also play a nice team defensive game - make teams work very hard to get into the box.
There are probably other coaches but I think people have or will later mention them.
