Post by Jonathan28 Fri 16 May - 17:52:44

Having the tournament in the summer is fine, I have no idea what the problem is. I used to play hours of football in over 40 degrees of heat during the summer back home in Botswana, you're not going to fall over and die ffs.

I'm looking forward to going to Qatar, I need to see the sun again ffs, it's non existent up here in Scotland.

Good for you.
You may have no idea what the problem is, but there is a problem. If there wasn't there would be no discussion of moving it to the winter.

i don't think the summer thing is the big issue.. more or less the biggest issue is the amount of deaths to get this world cup going.
also the corruption and bribes it took to get it

Death,corruption,bribes>> weather for sure.
If it's already been stated it's a mistake there's really no point from others defending it tbh.

Let's hope Brazil isn't bad because that's been getting a lot shit too. A lot of drama there

ESPN ran a special on the Qatar migrant worker deaths that's been making some waves in the states

Between Qatar and Brazil FIFA have had a brutal year - in any normal organization the boss might be sacked but this is FIFA, Blatter is basically untouchable

Disgraceful organization tbh

Nah, it is a big problem in Qatar because its heat coupled with insane humidity.

What you are looking at is 90% humidity or higher coupled with temperature reaching 50 degrees regularly.

2022 Qatar World Cup - Page 6 Empty ESPN expose Qatar WC labor camps

Post by lenear1030 Sun 18 May - 18:29:06

I'm watching it right now on SportsCenter here in the States. Jeremy Schaap is reporting it. It's a pretty bad look for Qatar with how they are treating the migrant workers and the conditions they have to endure.

Also Blatter came out and said selecting Qatar was a mistake... (no sh*t Sepp!) Now it's gonna be held in the winter  I know 2022 is a way off, but still...

FIFA is a disgrace of an organization. How many have died already in these labor camps and how many more need to die before something changes ? How big is the death toll already ?

Anyone in FIFA who voted for the WC in Qatar should be held indirectly responsible for those deaths and punished accordingly.

First thing that needs to happen is that Sepp Blatter step down and anyone who voted for WC in Qatar be fired and fined.

It's bad... but then again, atrocities exist in South Africa. Brazil has the favelas that are basically shanty towns that are run by criminal rings (child, women and men are basically enslaved). Russia and estern europe has a huge problem with human trafficking. Etc.

If you're going to take the WC away from Qatar, then you need to take it away from Brazil and Russia too.

You can't pick and choose who you apply morality to.

Look at this Ganso. Pretty much tells you what you need to know about the stats regarding modern slavery....

Brazil is actually ranked worse than Qatar. Plenty of other countries too that may surprise.

Yes, I saw that earlier, I do recognize that we have slavery here, specially in the more remote/northern parts of the country, but it looks like slavery in Qatar is something banal.I mean, there are slaves working in WC projects there. You dont have that type of stuff going on here.I was always against the WC being held in Brazil,we weren't ready for it, but the situation in Qatar is just ridiculous.

The problem in Qatar is not Qatar persay...  it's the Indian/Pakistan labor agents that trick their own countrymen into signing these contracts.  Then the construction companies bid on the construction projects based on the labor cost numbers they get through these agents...   they underbid and win these projects because of this.  Qatar has a law where you cannot leave their country without authorization if you are under contract... everyone knows that.  They don't make exceptions for anyone.

So where is the biggest problem for me?  In India and Pakistan where people sign these contracts and then are sent to places like Qatar and the construction companies that use these labor agents.  Those are the people you need to target.

As bad as it is...  there is only 4k migrant laborers on average in Qatar a year with over 2 million people living there.  That's miniscule.  It's not this rampant problem that people make it out to be. To compare to Russia... Russia has over 500k slaves and is ranked much, much worse than Qatar. The media should target Russia first since the WC there is sooner.

Over a thousand migrant workers dead, and a report released in March by the International Trade Union Confederation estimates that 4,000 will die by the time the '22 WC kicks off under current conditions.

Where did you get these figures from? According to The Guardian Qatar has 1.4 million total migrant workers, and according to Bloomberg Nepal alone has 400,000 migrants working in Qatar...

Maybe this is a stupid question, but why do migrant workers keep on coming to Qatar if they basically end up in slavery and might die? Are the conditions in their home country even worse or what's the deal?

I mean migrant workers that are considered modern slaves.

That's impossible for Qatar to have 1,4 mil migrant workers.  They have a total population of 2,1 million, 900k of which are Qatar nationals.  So if you mean expatriates...  there are 1,2+ million.  But very few of these people are migrant workers... mostly professionals like in the UAE.  The Guardian is full of crap if it's reporting that there are 1,4 million migrant workers in Qatar.

Many of them are lured into moving to countries such as Qatar and the UAE with false promises; without having the resources to know what actually is happening there. The pay that they receive is better than what they would earn back home, which is most probably the strongest incentive.

However, their passports are often taken, they are unable leave their jobs as per their wishes and barely have any days off. And of course, as we can see the working conditions aren't great, to say the least.

You keep referring to the global slavery index but are overlooking the fact that more than 400 construction worker have died in the country since the bid was won (http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/feb/16/qatar-world-cup-400-deaths-nepalese).

Yes, Brazil may have terrible ranking on the global slavery index, as may the places where these workers original come from (i.g. India, Bangladesh etc.). And of course, the favelas are undoubtedly a tough place to live to say the least, plus the gun related violence South Africa is terrible.

But I fail to understand why should this should even matter when 400 people have lost their lives? It's like choosing a lesser evil. Call them slaves, workers, or employees it doesn't really matter when 400 lives have been lost. And the sad part is that it doesn't seem like gets going to stop there.
