Just how epic was the battle between Chiellini and Cavani

Forget the brilliant and hostile atmosphere. Forget the animosity between fans and clubs. Forget Marchisio playing through with even more grinta than usual. Forget Mazzari's dry and sarcastic chiding on everything within the game.

The battle between Chellini and Cavani was like Zlatan vs Chellini but with hair-pulling (Cavani's obviously) aerial battles, close marking and vicious elbows to the face.



Here is Giorgio Cheillini having his face time-warped by Chin's Elbow.

Somebody please post a video of this whole battle.

Btw, Cheillini is a F*CKING boss. Not only he proves that he is the only man so far that can genuinely subdue the threat of Zlatan, but now has continually proven it against Cavani. Juve's backline look completely different with his leadership, command and uncompromising defence.

not wanting to take anything away from Chielini's performance, but Cavani hasnt scored in like 10 games if im correct

Chielini is the 2nd best CB in the world IMO,behind Thiago Silva.Thiago Silva is injury prone though.

I would say second to Barzagli who I consider to be there with Thiago Silva and see him as more stable than him

Barzagli is great as well,you have probably seen more of them both so you can judge better but whenever I see Juve Chielini always stands out the most for me.

because if his role in this Juve. Barzagli never lost a man or a duel so far this season not that I've seen, actually this whole year he is solid he never makes mistakes, he is excellent game reader and smart player ...

chiellini is the BEST 1v1 defender in the world.

Silva is the best CB and it's not very close... after that, you have a group of 10 CBs that go up and down (Chiellini, Barzagli, Pique, Ramos, Pepe, Kompany, Vidic, Hummels, etc.). None of them have near the overall qualities of Silva... they specialize in our or two aspects of CB play.

I don't buy into the over pumped hype of Silva on this forum. Chiellini is heads and shoulders above him.

I remember when everyone on this forum thought Vidic was the undisputed number 1 defender in the world..... doing the same to Thiago Silva...it's called over-hyping

I actually rate Vidic miles ahead of Silva.

Ive said for months that TS is not the best abd i used to get bashed for it. Now people are finally giving Giorgio the credit he deserves. Hes the best in the world in my opinion, closely followed by Barzagli.

Gotta love Giorgio, a true warrior. In my house he is just known as "Il Auschwitz". If one was to put a face on an escaped prisoner, it would be Chiellinis.

I am still a little worried how Juves shirt-pulling/wrestling is gonna fare in the late stages of the CL. They might meet a ref like Lazio had against Gladbach in the first leg.

Only reason people are giving in is because they are upset the Silva is at PSG... there's no other reason lol. He's exactly the same as he was while at Milan and completely dominant. He's the only CB i see out there that makes the attack play at his rhythm most times.

Great defense is not about one-on-ones. If you get into a one-on-one with no cover, the defense has made a mistake as a unit. Great defense is putting the forwards into positions you want them to. That's the beauty of Silva... his positioning and play before the ball gets there is second to none.

Chiellini's role as a CB is different from that of Silva's...
Silva is more like Barzagli...
Silva to me was never the bests defender in the world...He was overhyped because he played beside the legendary Nesta...for example
The 2-2 draw at Nou Camp where Nesta completely owned Messi & Silva got the late equalizer, everyone started getting crazy about Silva because he scored & that Milan didn't lose when infact Nesta was the one doing the dirty work...

I think I've seen this guy before saying this at the Euro, Silva is the Messi of defenders, he has Sakho and Alex beside him, no Sandro at PSG but he is still the best. That bias lol.

Good call about that, Chiellini can really get into some personal battles (Ibra, Cavani etc). but this is also his strength, he can get into a forward's head. He can follow him the entire game and this is how I prefer to see him play when its called for, his man-marking is quite good in this situation.

Whether he's the best, top 3, top 5, 10 or 15 it doesn't really matter to me and I don't think it should be as significant to anyone else. It just comes down to opinion and preference, and bias (yes, bias). It seems like everyone can agree he's a top defender and a world class one at that, and that's enough for me

Highly disappointing that a thread in praise of Chiellini could not be enjoyed without attempting to drag down the name of Thiago Silva. He's a truly fantastic player, a real warrior without par in Serie A. Easily the best central defender in the league, though this is hardly the place to give my thoughts on why he's better than Barzagli.
