Balague on Monreal: "Some people say he is the best full-back in Spain after Jordi Alba. An intelligent signing." - http://bit.ly/WDuSFj
Re: Nacho Monreal
Man I hope he is ready to play for the rest of the year. If he is half as good as people say Gibbs will need to fight hard to get off the bench.

Re: Nacho Monreal
Interesting that Arsene said "Monreal can also play Left Wing"
Maybe to effectively use Giroud's heading ability we are going to deploy Gibbs as the LB and Monreal as the LW
joking aside. Baptism of fire for Monreal against stoke

Re: Nacho Monreal
Let me make one thing clear. Natxo Monreal at the moment is the best Spanish (Basque) Leftback out of anyone. He is superior to Jordi Alba and even young Jon Aurtunexte.
Jordi Alba is not the best Spanish LB in any spectrum simply because he is a below average fullback.
What you can expect from Natxo is a very very consistent basis of performances. I've already stated that athletically he is not very impressive outside the aerial battles and attacking headers.
What he does excel is in his sheer intelligence in defence. His sense of positioning and reading is very solid along with rarely having to resort to latch ditch tackles. Its his excellent discipline which is unusual for a Basque Lb who usually are more attack-oriented. He isn't flashy by any means but possesses excellent close control in tight spaces along with the use of cunning and guile to occasionally beat his man. He also is known for his accurate crossing which possesses excellent curve. His shooting is not powerful but usually accurate as he also is adept with his weaker right foot which is impressive. He also can play CDM which he occasionally played at Osasuna which is a testament to his versatility.
Once again, Arsenal literally stole Naxto for such an excellent price as once again, He is the best Spanish LB. His age (26) is hardly a factor given he isn't too reliant on his athletic abilities.
Did I also mention that he is the ultimate big game man?
Now with Jack Wilshere and Mikel Arteta, Arsenal have their latest Basque addition

Re: Nacho Monreal
Every description I read of him, like Arq's, and every video I watch of him, I see more and more similarities with Sagna. Not terribly fast or outstanding in one particular aspect of his game but a very well rounded, intelligent defender.

Re: Nacho Monreal
Did he take corner kicks on a regular basis at Malaga? I hear he is really good at crossing, and we could use someone to help us out with our corners because we seemingly never convert off of them.

Re: Nacho Monreal
Really? Giroud's scored a couple iirc. One against West Ham and one against Reading. I think Koscielny's against Reading was one too. There've been quite a few actually. Not sure how our corner goals compare to other PL teams or our squad last year.
But his crossing will definitely be welcome especially as Giroud's now in his first purple patch.

Yeah, those three are the only corner goals I can remember from the whole season though lol. Its just I feel like getting a corner kick is a bigger oppertunity than we really make it out to be. Especially with Giroud always ready to pound one in for us. We just don't serve em up that well up until this point. Hopefully Nacho can help add another threat to our game

What does Monreal say when he dispossesses someone? "It's Nacho ball."

Re: Nacho Monreal
He was never that good, he Was decent at best.He got dropped as soon as Gibbo came back. Jury is still out because he yet to have a good run in the team. Every time he does he gets injured or Gibbo comes back.

Malaga had real structure and team ethic, the absence of those things is tough to manuever for guys like him. That and a lack of playing time is a recipe for sluggishness and mediocrity.

Re: Nacho Monreal
Doesn't help that he always somehow has Vermaelen on his side. Vermaelen could've easily avoided the goal if he pressed the goalscorer like Mertesacker did instead of backing out. Did the same shit against Lukaku but never seems to learn.

I was honestly asking you if you were including them, I am not pro-wenger, and I think he is the worst manager when it comes to signings.REWB wrote:Artilleristen wrote:Are you saying that Ozil, and Flamini have been poor this year?REWB wrote:my gawd, wengers signings these past 2 years have been UBER poor.

Re: Nacho Monreal
One of Malaga's best performers, Monreal. His displays for us have been average. A few have been horrendous, too.
Been here for over a year now, should really start getting to grips with the way the Premier League is. Don't think he's helped by the left-wingers, at all - which is an issue to be dealt with by the manager, but Monreal's individual displays are of slight concern.

Re: Nacho Monreal
I still give him a benefit of doubt, he was really good for 1st few months, stepped in for the team. In fact I remember there was a talk here among our gunners, who should start him or Gibbs. It could be injuries, fitness (he looks kinda jaded in those big games) or confidence given Gibbs starting over him right now.
I know he doesn't mind being a sub so keep him and spend money somewhere else, we don't have a luxury of Jenkinson & Bellerin for the left flank.

Re: Nacho Monreal
Cazorla, Podolski and Giroud were all good signings too - even if you don't like Giroud, he was originally going to be a backup for RvP and while he hasn't been good enough to lead us to glory, he is still a good player to have. Then there's Sanogo, a young, free agent striker with potential. Are these guys all "UBER poor" in your opinion?REWB wrote:Artilleristen wrote:Are you saying that Ozil, and Flamini have been poor this year?REWB wrote:my gawd, wengers signings these past 2 years have been UBER poor.

Really only Monreal hasn't been what I would consider a good signing in the past two years, but even then he came in to replace Andre Santos and that in and of itself improved us greatly. He needs to improve because as a backup to the injury-prone Gibbs, he's going to get game-time and he is going to have to play well, but I wouldn't mind giving him another season.
I would agree that we could have used more signings for sure, but the guys who came in weren't terrible players at all. If anything, Arsene has improved markedly compared to the types of signings he made a few years ago.

Re: Nacho Monreal
Monreal is a very good player and we're lucky to have him as backup, which team has a better backup LB? Let's not kid ourselves here, Monreal is a spanish international and many CL teams would love to have him. Some poor performances don't equate a poor signing because he's had very good performances as well.
