Qatar Airways to appear on Barça shirt from 2013/14 season

The contract signed by Qatar Sports Investment and FC Barcelona foresaw the possibility of including a new sponsor on the team shirt from the third season of the agreement

The Qatar Foundation now becomes FC Barcelona’s Official Human Development Partner, which will allow them to continue promoting their shared values


FC Barcelona and Qatar Sports Investments announce that they have agreed, under the terms of their contract, that Qatar Airways will appear on the Club shirt from the 2013-2014 season as the new Main Global Sponsor.

Meanwhile, Qatar Sports Investments, in agreement with FC Barcelona, has designated Qatar Foundation as the Official Human Development Partner of FC Barcelona, which will allow the promotion of initiatives based on their shared values to continue.

Sandro Rosell, president of FC Barcelona, has welcomed Qatar Airways as, “an ambitious brand with global aspirations, always committed to achieving the utmost excellence in its field. These are objectives with which FC Barcelona fully identifies.”

The contract signed with QSI permits the possibility of including a new logo on the shirt from the third season of the agreement, as we reported to the Assembly of Representatives in September 2011. The inclusion of sponsorship on the shirt was agreed at the Assembly of Representatives in August 2003.

Rosell also stressed that “after sharing two fantastic years with Qatar Foundation, we are delighted to be continuing our relationship by welcoming them as our official Human Development Partner.”

Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways, said, “We are delighted to form this alliance with FC Barcelona, the biggest football club in the world. Qatar Airways has been voted Best Airline in the World for two consecutive years (2011 and 2012) and will work with FC Barcelona on activities of benefit both to fans and passengers, offering tangible rewards to both organisations.”

A Qatar Foundation spokesperson added that “when we started this fantastic journey with FC Barcelona, our objective was to work closely with the club, the team and the supporters to promote awareness of Qatar Foundation on an international scale. This has been a huge success. In fact, the first two years of the collaboration have surpassed our expectations and we are looking to deepen and strengthen our relationship with FC Barcelona and its supporters around the world in our continued role as a proud partner of the club.”

Qatar Sports Investments, Qatar Airways and Qatar Foundation are united in their commitment to the success of FC Barcelona.

Idk, do we need money that badly?

So now we get an antelope on our shirt?

On the plus side, this logo is purple which might make it stand out less and the font is less crappy. From that point of view, this isn´t that bad.

This is the beginning of a long line of crappy commercial shirtsponsors.

Rosell is a sly man. In order to sell us the idea of getting a shirt sponsor he claimed it was to a non-for-profit, but never mentioned (at least that I can remember) the possibility of switching sponsors to a commercial brand in 2 years.

@Shini: I don't believe we'll be getting more money from this. Maybe if they extend.

What a shame. You can't put a price on history and uniqueness of this club. Well, that's over.

Theres a difference between having sponser advertisements at the Camp Nou and on the jerseys. The Barca jersey is arguably the most recognised one in the world; and having a sponser advertisement on it is despicable. Im happy with UNICEF- at least it shows we stand for something good, but now with this Qatar Airlines, we are exactly the same as every other team in the world. Really sad. Thanks Rosell!
Even with Qatar Foundation was decent enough as its a foundation emphaising education- but not we've really sold out. Qatar Airlines is just some random company standing for nothing noble. Thanks again Rosell for the greatness you have given Barca. Barca are beginning to become less unique now and soon enough we will won't be more than a club...

This is utter garbage and I refuse to every buy another shirt until we either drop the sponsor all together or we go back to the UNICEF spot

Its a truly unfortunate move.As mentioned Rossell is a very sly man.
Really hope the next president goes back to Unicef.

Lets be realistic... it was going to happen eventually. Not saying I'm happy about it but we're the last club to take on a shirt sponsor. I'm proud of that.

I became rather indifferent about this issue until we lower down the debt. However, with plans for new Camp Nou lurking around i do not see this happen in the next 10 years, therefore, just make them pay good money for the logo they put on a shirt.

I'm hoping Barca will elect a cruyffist for the next president and he'll reverse this and make johan the honorary president again.

But yeah, I learned to live with this when we started having Qatar Foundation on the shirt. Inevitable commercial sponsor was inevitable.

Well since that unique portion of our history is gone, might as well go for the largest/best deal. The world changes values, we have to move with the world now
