Oh no, can't believe he's actually not signing a LB. Vermaelen is our best CB, he should be playing CB. Gibbs will be injured in like 2 games.

The 2011 Summer Transfer Rumours Thread - Page 30 Empty Wenger - We have what we need at left back

Post by Raptorgunner Mon Jul 11, 2011 1:27 pm

Arsène Wenger has hinted that he might not invest in a replacement for Gael Clichy.

The French left back brought his eight-year spell with Arsenal to a close this month when he signed for Manchester City, leaving Wenger without one of his most senior players ahead of the 2011/12 season.

However, the Arsenal manager has a full England international waiting in the wings and he is happy with his back-up options too.

"The plan for left back is that we have Kieran Gibbs, Armand Traore and Thomas Vermaelen can play there too. So we have what we need," said Wenger.

Gibbs doesn't need this, he has lost a lot of confidence with all his injuries then he has to deal with the pressure of replacing clichy but the guy is got character so I think he will do well.

It seems like risky business to move Vermaelen to LB, but then again a defence of Sagna-Djourou-Kos/new signing-Vermaelen looks pretty solid to me.

Speaking of defence, we've been linked with Mertesacker again as Werder Bremen don't look as though they are going to renew his contract despite going into his last year next season. They don't have the money to keep him and would be willing to sell him for probably less than he is worth. I know not all of you think the gigantic German would be a good signing for us, but I like him soo I'm optimistic Smile

As for Cesc and Nasri, even though not all of Wenger's words were totally reassuring, he claimed that he expected Cesc to stay "simple as that," and that Nasri "is very happy at the Club and committed to stay at the Club." I think the chances of them staying are higher than them leaving.

Barca is waiting to get Sanchez finalized to then make their final offer on Cesc. I think they hit the 40 mark and he's gone. They weren't going to move on Cesc... or finalize the sale of Bojan, until Sanchez was official.

Wenger would be crazy to let Cesc go, if he wants to win EPL.

If selling cesc allows you to buy a wc cb and dm, I think it makes the club stronger actually. Nasri, cesc, Gervinho, rvp and Walcott cannot all start together and they deserve to... Unless they know they can be benched (which is what happens at Madrid).

Nah we have the money to buy a defender. As soon as bendtner is sold, our transer funds will be back to where it was at the start of the transfer window. We have the money no doubt.

The 2011 Summer Transfer Rumours Thread - Page 30 Empty Re: The 2011 Summer Transfer Rumours Thread

Post by RealGunner Tue Jul 12, 2011 12:16 am

Arsène Wenger hopes to convince Cesc Fabregas that the greatest achievement of his career would be to stay at Arsenal and lead them to glory.

The Spanish midfielder has been linked with a move to Barcelona throughout this summer and discussed his situation with the manager when he returned to pre-season training last week.

As expected, the future of Fabregas was the major talking point for the media when Arsenal touched down in Malaysia on Monday for the start of their Asia Tour.

The 24-year-old was not on the plane because of injury however his manager believes the captain will be keeping the armband this season.

“I am confident because I hope he will see that there will be no greater achievement for him in his life than to lead this team to success and that it will not be the right period for him to leave the Club,” said Wenger.

"I think Cesc has always been torn between his love for Arsenal - that I feel is really genuine – and, something you can understand, the desire to play for the biggest team at the moment in the world. I think both exist in his head.

"But you can only be in if you are completely in. He is the leader of the team. He has to be completely focused and convinced that he wants to stay.

“Some people questioned him last season but I never question his commitment. This guy is a real winner and if he had not the season we expected, it was down to injuries. He played in some games where he was not right completely but he wanted to play and to win.”

The manager revealed he would not keep Fabregas if the player was adamant about his desire to go but the Frenchman was at pains to point out that, if the midfielder does move away, finances would not be a factor.

“We want to keep him and, for us, it's not a question of money,” said Wenger. “We are not here to make the money. We are here to keep our best players. We have managed the Club to be in a position to say 'no'. For any money.

"We have that potential to do it because we are in a healthy financial situation. But on the other hand, you need as well the player wanting to be with you.

“I have heard people say that we do not want to keep Cesc. We are desperate to keep Cesc! And we will fight for everything because you do not educate a player for eight years as we have done only to want him to go once he is at an age to deliver. We want to keep the team together.

“If we wanted to make a money situation and wanted to sell the player, we put him on the market and we ask 'who gives more?' But that would not be the conversation. For us, it's not a question of money. It is a question of Cesc wanting to be with us. And I think he is torn because he loves the Club deeply. But we will fight until the last second to keep him.”

Arsène Wenger has no intention of selling Samir Nasri because he says it would undermine Arsenal's claims to be an ambitious club.

The French midfielder's current contract expires next summer and his refusal to sign a new deal has prompted a wave of speculation about his future with both Manchester clubs reportedly leading the race for Nasri's signature.

The theory is that Arsenal would rather cash in on the 24-year-old than risk losing him on a Bosman free transfer at the end of the season, but Wenger does not see it that way. He insists that the Club needs Nasri more than it needs the money - and that's why selling him is not on Wenger's agenda.

"Samir's situation is clear for me - he stays," Wenger reiterated when he spoke to reporters in Malaysia.

"I've told you that we are in a position where we can say 'No.' And we will [in the case of Nasri]."

It was put to Wenger that keeping Nasri with no guarantee that he will sign a new contract represents a £20million gamble - the fee his suitors are reportedly prepared to pay.

"You are the same people who reproach me for not spending money and now you reproach me for wanting to spend it!" replied Wenger.

"It is in the interests of the Club," he went on. "Imagine the worst situation - we lose Fabregas and Nasri - you cannot convince people you are ambitious after that.

"And even if you lose Nasri, to find the same quality player, you have to spend again the same amount of money. Because you cannot say that you lose the player and you do not replace him.

“I believe for us it is important that the message we give out - for example you see about Fabregas leaving, Nasri leaving - if you give that message out you cannot pretend you are a big club.

“Because a big club first of all holds onto its big players and gives a message out to all the other big clubs that they just cannot come in and take [players] away from you.

“We worked very hard with these players for years to develop them and now it’s time for us to keep them together.”

Fabregas should step back and look how both clubs have handled this saga

Barcelona, constantly making snide remarks to the papers (which are always, and conveniently, mis-translated, or taken out of context Rolling Eyes) while the club itself insult him by undervaluing him horribly and expect him to simply leave for as little as possible because he spent a couple of days with them when he was a kid. I thought you did everything humanly possible to re-acquire that which you once lost?

Meanwhile, Wenger has probably spent countless nights up trying to think of a way to persuade him to stay, which most likely hasn't done his health any good. All the players want him to stay, as do 99% of the fans. Listening to the way some Barca "fans" on here talk about Cesc, you'd think he was a pile of dog kak they stepped in

It shouldn't be a hard choice to make, but somehow, Fabregas is making it out to be

who loves him more ?

the fans who have watched him grow up ? Who supported him when he first came to the country, who have never ever complained when he has had bad games? who treats him like their son, brother, idol ?

or some random catalans who dont even care about him ? who just wants him at the club because they are afraid of madrid signing more quality players? who dont even know half the stuff about cesc like we do ?

yes its cesc's hometown, his childhood place, he has his family n friends there but He really needs to think about this.

I said a couple of weeks ago that I had a feeling Cesc would stay. While I am still confident in my claim, Wenger's comments still doesn't fill me with assurences. Clearly, Cesc has not conclusively said "I want to stay" or "I will stay this season" and, judging from Wenger's interview, is still torn on what to do.

As for Nasri, it seems more and more likely that he's staying next season. The worry now is whether or not he'll sign a new contract. Wenger may say we're in a position where we don't need the money, but if Nasri isn't prepared to commit then surely it would be better to cash in now and use the money to buy a replacement. It seems like the most logical move to make. Keeping Nasri with incrdible uncertainty over him signing a new deal is a big risk.

In both cases, Arsenal making some good investments and having a successful season will go a long way towards convincing these two players that their future is at Arsenal. We've got Gervinho, now it's time for some defensive signings.

Hopefully, we will use the money from Almunia's and Bendtner's transfers to fund the signing on a defender.

you know, if i was living in a fantasy world, or in dreamland

i would think that nasri is doing all this so he can make wenger buy more players, or he can make cesc stay.

obviously stuff like this happens in movies n books but meh

Ferguson is trying to unsettle us. What he's saying is that Nasri isn't going to united, and he's not sure what is happening with him. It's not a given that he's leaving this year, and he could end up signing a new contract. It works better for Ferguson if he continues the saga by infering he's leaving.

Q: Would a major signing not be convincing to the players who are ambivalent about staying?

Arsene Wenger: Well we are - what is very difficult for us is as long as you do not know this group stays together you cannot strengthen the team because you think if he goes I have to do what?

But I cannot really tell you (the transfer target) I want already because if he stays you cannot (come in). So you are in no-man's land, that is terrible. That is why the transfer period basically should stop when the training starts.

-------------------------------------

From the Mirror. Perhaps the biggest indication of what we're doing this summer; waiting for the futures of certain players to be decided before making a move.

I'm sure Wenger has his targets, but doesn't want to move for those targets until he knows for sure Cesc and Nasri are staying. That's the impression I ge from this.
