DFB Pokal 2012/13

The DFB-Pokal 2012/13 - German Cup 2012/13 is really fun again. From 17 Bundesliga teams that played so far in the 1st round, 6 were eliminated by 3rd or 4th Liga sides. The German Cup is played with one leg per round, the lower league teams are always the home teams in the 1st and 2nd round.

Here are the standings after the 1st round:



Green - club moved to the next round. Red - eliminated BL club.
The draw for the 2nd round will be on Saturday 25 August 2012.

Jahn Regensburg (just promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga) vs Bayern München just started live at the ARD. Now let's see whether Bayern will be the 7th BL team that gets kicked out of the Pokal, or if they put the Jahn into their place

Not really. Contrary to England, here the Pokal isn't considered a Mickey Mouse Cup, which is why the BL teams play their first teams, if available.

The problem was more that is was really hot this weekend (in excess of 35-40°C on the pitch - the refs even allowed for extra breaks during the halves to let the players drink!), and it appeared as if some of the BL teams just didn't take the lower league sides too serious. And while the latter went to play with 200%, many of the BL players sure thought they didn't have too work as hard and were punished for it.

BTW, Mandzukic scored the 1:0 for Bayern in the 31st minute.

By the way, for those who think the DFB-Pokal / German Cup is similar to the British or Spanish Cup in importance among the clubs:

I had high hopes... Well, at least the matches were fun to watch.

Yeah. Only upsets were probably HSV and Werder in the first round, but then not much whatsoever.
