Just answer me one more thing: how can a midfield player who is great at passing but crap at defending be more influential on the result of a game than a player who is pretty good at both?

Pirlo has been far more influential than Carrick. If you had watched Juventus this year you would have seen Pirlo be the main man in midfield and he controlled nearly every game he was involved in. Not to mention he was serie A top assister of the season which on it's on is very influential.
Also, Pirlo has an underrated tackling game. He made a few last ditch key tackles for Juventus. Yes he's not exactly a midfield destroyer
but he's nowhere near as useless as people make him out to be.

Yeah but on a scale of 1-10, Pirlo is 9 at passing and Carrick is 8, and Pirlo is 6 at passing and Carrick is 8. Being generous to Pirlo there as well, statistically at least.
Pirlo obviously dictates the game when Juventus are the better team, because he doesn't have to defend as much, but my argument is that Carrick is more influential over games against top quality opposition. Plus Carrick plays in a 2 man midfield and United still dominate games, Pirlo (as far as I know) hasn't shown that capability.

Pirlo is the reason Juventus had one of the best possession stats in Europe last season. Pirlo dictates games which leads to Juventus being the better side, not the other way about.
As for the top Quality opposition part well that's debateable.
Pirlo gets more assists, he also gets a goal roughly every 10 games and retains the ball better than Carrick. His passing accuracy is lower than it could be because players such as scholes will look for a careful pass whereas Pirlo will do that to some extent as well as looking for a defence splitting pass when he can.

That was my first reaction, then I moved it here to not compltely derail the topic.
It's a sad day for football when somebody doesn't recognise that Pirlo is obviously better than Carrick and that Vidal - Marchisio are level with Fletcher and Anderson despite not seeing them play.

That's all I need. As long as you, a biased Juventus fan, acknowledge that it's debatable whether or not Pirlo or Carrick would be more influential in a game against an equally good opponent, then that's fine by me.
I've acknowledged that Pirlo is obviously more talented and can do things with the ball that Carrick could never dream of doing, but as I've said all along, my argument was for Carrick being more influential in a game against equally good opposition.
Now would you agree that all that mockery from before was unjustified?

To clarify that, I mean to be fair both players can still help run a midfield reguardless of the opposition. You implied Carrick was better in big games and I mean Pirlo is also great in most big games. I wouldn't say he was more influential in big games but equally influential.
For me and many others still Pirlo is a much better player. That opinion will never change.

The only difference really is how we judge players.
Most people, including yourself judge players on their talent and what they're capable of doing, whereas I like to judge them on their consistency and how much influence they have over a testing match against top quality opposition.
But mocking me for comparing these players is not justified. It's not like I was comparing Pirlo with Steven Gerrard.

He's totally right.Also Andrea Pirlo is a worse passer than John Terry.If you dont believe me check out statsdontmeanshit.com and you'll find that Pirlo had an 87.1% pass accuracy last season while John Terrys was 88.7%.
