Post by Guest Tue Aug 14, 2012 10:50 pm

After first game, our other 4 fixtures are:

City (H)
Arsenal (H)
Sunderland (A)
United (H)

Crucial to win on saturday. Very crucial, will keep our momentum going and keep the feel good factor. plus, Anfield will be buzzing when City come visiting.

just get Sahin and Dempsey in ffs......

Necessary to win considering the fixtures that come after. Need to take 9 points or so from those first five games, and that'll be almost impossible if we don't beat wba.

I think with the Europa games and the match vs Bayern you will be more prepared than a lot of teams. Definitely think you beat WBA and with matches vs Arsenal, City and United all at home could set yourself up very well for the season.

I would be more than happy with 6 or 7 pts from the first 5 games. We are under new manager with new style , will take time to be integrated.

Just Remember how awfully Spurs/Arsenal started last season.

This.

The first game is nice if you can get off to a good start and get momentum, but really I don't see it much more important than any other game of the season. IMO the crucial games are around the turn of the year where the results really start shaping up who will be where at the end of the season, and it's around the same time fatigue starts setting in ( at least for Barca historically)

You look at how Arsenal started the season and they finished third. No reason anyone else can't do the same thing.

West Brom were rather poor at home last season, losing over half of their home games. Hopefully that will continue on Saturday.

Although when it's the first day of the season, I'm sure the place will be rocking, it will be difficult for us. Clarke knows us very well. If I got offered a draw right now, I just might take it.

I just pulled out my 08-09 DVD and rewatched our whole season. What an amazing season Sad Have no idea how we didn't end up winning the title. Our midfield was out of this world  So pumped up for the season to start. bounce

The first five fixtures in any half of the season would have been vital. So they being in the beginning of the season doesn't make much of a difference to me. However, i feel the fixtures are pretty much favorable cause you see the difficult games are all HOME games. And the away games are ones we should try to win. So all in all not that bad! Thumbs up

Someone might as well start a thread for the Stoke game or we'll end up discussing it here now.

Nishank (match-day thread) and Art (prediction thread), time to get busy.

Here are two teasers
1. Who will start: Toure or Skrtel!
2. Who will start: Downing or Borini!

Toure and neither, I think front four will be Sturridge/Cou/Aspas and either Hendo or Allen, Downing and Borini will both be on the bench.

Then Sturridge is fit! I heard he have some injury/fitness issue.

Let's hope Agger is fit by then. That's the biggest concern for us.

Exactly. And if Agger gets injured, our defence becomes a joke even with Skrtel in it. It's already our weakest part in our starting XI with Agger in there in the first place.

So I don't see why we want to sell Skrtel for another CB to come in. Just sign a CB, and have Toure as the 4th CB.

Toure is without a doubt ahead of Skrtel in the pecking order at the moment.

I know, I don't agree with it either. But Skrtel hasn't done himself many favors when played.

Toure's outperformed Skrtel in pre-season (and obviously in training) and has far more experience while showing better consistency during his time in the PL. I don't think it's as much of a stretch to start him over Skrtel as some claim.

Skrtel is almost certainly the better player at the moment if both are in form. However, Skrtel hasn't been in convincing form for a while, nor does he seem comfortable in the higher line Rodgers wishes to establish (which was put off to accommodate Carra) while Kolo is both experienced and relatively comfortable in that system.

Also, I think the "importance" of the first game is overrated. It's just built up to be such a big deal so pundits and fans alike can overreact following the result.
