Re: 2012 Summer Olympics
Jessica Ennis
3 gold medals in space of 30 minutes
We are comfortably in 3rd now, we will never catch the Americans or the Chinese but 3rd is still a massive success if we stay there.
I was completely wrong about the olympics, it's been a massive success and will be worth every penny.
BTW typical that the footballers fail as usual.
So proud of all of them.

Sun Yang utterly destroyed his own world record by 3.12 seconds (14:34.14 - 14:31.02).

South Africa's Oscar Pistorius qualifies for the Semis in the Track competition. Great stuff.

Re: 2012 Summer Olympics
btw what is your opinion on this Sebastian Coe saying Phelps is not the greatest Olympian ever.
i agree with him, unlike many other Olympian he gets to take part in many events because swimming there gets a bigger chance in winning.
plus i rank people Jesse Owens, Mark Spitz (could have been better then Phelps), Carl Lewis much more them him not only because of what they achieved but how
Here is a good article form bbc
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/19073234
"While Lewis holds his place in history in part for winning medals in four different events, no other sports offer the same opportunities for multiple medals as swimming and, to a lesser extent, gymnastics."
btw i do rank him as one of the greats but he is not the GOAT

Monday, in the women’s fencing epee semifinal match between Britta Heidemann of Germany and Shin A Lam of South Korea, Lam led with one second left on the clock. All she had to do was not be touched in that one second and she would be advancing to the gold medal match. Unfortunately for Shin, the clock never started after the referee signaled to restart the match, giving Heidemann more than one second to land the winning touch.
Incensed, the Korean team paid to file an appeal of the decision, while Shin had to sit on the playing surface, known as a piste, to indicate that she did not accept the decision of the judges. She was there for over a half hour, with much of that time spent in tears, before the appeal was denied.
Shin remained on the piste after the decision was made in protest, before then being removed by security. She was then sent into the bronze medal match shortly after and, understandably still distraught, was defeated by China’s Yujie Sun. Shin should have been fencing for gold, but left empty handed.
Since the incident, it has come out that the timekeeper for the event was a 15 year old British volunteer. Really? This isn’t fencing class at the Y, this is the Olympics. There was nobody in the entire world with any timekeeping experience that could have been called upon to take on such an important task? When I was 15, I wouldn’t have had the attention span to do that job either. Whoever made the choice to put a child in charge of the clock for an Olympic event should be fired.

Re: 2012 Summer Olympics
Yeah, they covered that quite briefly here, in Australia. She was absolutely shattered - felt bad for her.

Re: 2012 Summer Olympics
that korean girl.... felt so bad for her... i cant believe the committee had the nerves to give her a "sportsmanship medal" afterwards.... which she obvsiouly rejected....
similar thing happened with the boxing match, where the guy who got knocked out 3 times and end up winning the match by decision bcuz the knockouts were never given during the match, but luckily they reversed the decision afterwards.
also on the phelps greatest thing, i dunno how to rank these athletes in absolute rank... bcuz there are so many greats, but while it is true there are many more events in swimming, to win multiple within hrs is ridiculous... i dont have the exact numbers but he had a great number of swims from heats to finals within couple of days. but ya its just really hard to compare some of the athletes.
and @Jespswe im not sure why china didnt have any gymnists in the all around final actually... they had only one who was eligible, but the team pulled him out of the competition and not sure what the reason was
but cant wait for more gymnastics tomorrow!!

That's awful! Could they not just start over again with one second on the clock?

there is time allotted to each sport, and it would have been unfair to both in the bronze or gold match having played two games while their opponents only played one
they already had made her wait for almost an hour while she was crying to give their decision. he couldn't move out of the arena or else it was considered giving up. he stayed in the arena for a whole hour crying then had to play the bronze medal game right after

he meant start the game over with ONE second on the clock... i mean i dont know the sport well, but that couldnt have taken that much out of the athletes, and it the most fair thing you can do imo
just doesnt make sense in some sports they revert decisions, and some they just refuse to no matter how poor the decision was

Re: 2012 Summer Olympics
Everyone root for Murray today.
This is the only chance he has, the 5 set game may actually favor him this time around after Fed's 4 hour slugfest.

Ben Ainslie beating Jonas Christensen on a tiebreaker
We will likely get another silver in badminton now, doubt we will beat the chinese pair in the finals
