I also think Makelele and Essien are more of Chelsea legends than Mikel, while he out lasted both, but he was never as great as either.

I also think you could have a club legend who was only around for 2-3 seasons. For example, Tore Andre Flo is often regarded as a Chelsea legend, but only played for us for 3 and a third seasons. Or Jimmy Greaves who only played for 4 seasons, and later joined Spurs, yet he is still largely considered a Chelsea legend.

So I'd argue that your second point is much more important than longevity.

If being a solid player several managers were comfortable enough to rely on from time to time, without ever really cementing a sustained spot in the side, and sticking around for years less out of loyalty than out of no one remotely at the club's level wanting you, then yea, he's a legend.

And I say this as someone who quite likes him personally. A player sure to be remembered by any supporter who lived through his lengthy spell with us, but in any future history books you'll be unlikely to find him.

If anything Mikel is one of the most enigmatic players in football period. Everything from his transfer from
Man united to the eve changing roles he's played (he still plays as an AM for Nigeria) makes him a real one of a kind.

A legend though? No. Although an important player at times, Mikel never defined a time in the clubs history or changed a season like Lamprd, Drogba and Terry have.

Not a legend, but in the same regard neither is Paolo (but I love Paolo).

I'd say he's defo a hero of some sorts, he's been a great servant.

Never quite reached the heights of what we wanted but he's stuck around for a long time and props to him.
