Last Chance Saloon at Euro 2012? Empty Last Chance Saloon at Euro 2012?

Post by samcooke1991 Sun Jun 03, 2012 5:55 pm

What with Frank Lampard missing out it got me thinking that has to mean the ship has sailed for him in terms of performing for England at major tournaments. Put together a piece on the numerous other players who are in the same boat but fortunately for them are not injured and will get a chance to impress.
Who do people think'll perform the best??
Pirlo's had a cracker at Juventus this year and Klose if put in the first team will undoubtedly hit the back of the net.
Kinda want Shevchenko to have a cracker despite them being in our group...

Pirlo is Pirlo

Sadly this was probably Puyol's last big tournament, and he's going to miss it Sad

Yeah sad about Puyol, same as Lampard, Ferdinand. Pirlo got the most assists in Serie A - he should be key to any success Italy have. if they're in the tournament that is...

Alfred needs some reading lessons x)

Nice thread, btw.

Umm, I'm for some reason expecting Arshavin, 31, to have a good tournament. Obviously it might not be his last chance quite yet though.

Milan Baros and Tomas Rosicky (30 and 31) ?

Kuyt will be 32 soon and I'd really like him to have a good tournament, don't think we'll see him in Brazil '14.

Klose, obviously.

Buffon, maybe? He's 34 already. Then again Shay Given is 36 and he's playing here.

Gerrard's 32, it could be his last tournament. Also might not be. Terry is 31 and I think England will have a handful of better CBs by 2014.

No Pirlo's not out, sorry can see how you could have read it like that !
Yeah true about Kuyt , will most probably be his last.

Klose could have a great tournament , he seems to always do well for Germany but will obviously be behind Gomez in the pecking order now.

Can't think of anyone that'll replace Given currently so I reckon he'll have the world cup in him as well but we'll wait and see - really hope Ireland don't humiliate themselves ; tough group but Trappatoni's built a pretty decent team.

Kloses last tournament as a starter in my opinion. Would still be a great super sub though.

Totti, Del Piero, Lampard, Nesta, Ferdinand, and Puyol i think are all done on the international stage. This was their last chances, and they werent even called up.

Pirlo will still start at the 2014 World Cup in my opinion unless Verratti or Montolivo really step it up. I think the 2014 World Cup would be his last bug International tournament though, whether hes a starter then or not. Hell just be too old by 2016.

Buffon has till the 2016 World Cup in my opinion. Keepers go longer than field players.

Terry and Gerrard, it all depends on their form, and if any big stafs emerge in the ndxt 2-4 years. I think they have enough in their tank to go to 2014, and maybe even 2016 as depth players, but their starting spots in 2014 are not guaranteed at all.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned van Bommel yet. He's almost certainly playing his last tournament this summer. It could be the last tournament for a number of the Dutch defensive players. Bouma is almost certainly in for his final tournament showing; Mathijsen and Boulahrouz could also be done after this if some young Dutch defenders show potential.

Last Chance Saloon at Euro 2012? Empty Re: Last Chance Saloon at Euro 2012?

Post by Guiltybystander Wed Jun 06, 2012 5:14 am

This is the last tournament for this particular Netherlands squad, a lot of the big games will either not return for 2014 or will be depth players at that time.

More motivation for us/them to try and win it I guess,

I'd say this is also the last tournament for Xavi, Villa, Puyol, perhaps Alonso, as Spain has such depth (esp in midfield) that they will probably have been taken over at that point. Xavi has been on a slow but steady decline, unfortunately for the sport. In general, Barcelona fans should be wary of him playing this tournament; he was very tired and bordering on a serious injury this season. Wouldn't be surprised if that goes wrong.

For some other players, like Ibrahimovic and RVP, this might also be the last tournament they are at their peek...

this is the last Chance for all of England's Golden Generation.

I doubt Cole, Ferd, Terry, Gerrard, Lampard, Parker, Barry and who ever I missed will be called up again.

Because Van Bommel will only retire if Oranje with the cup otherwise he will keep on playing. And since his Father-in-law is the coach so he will probably be called for the 2014 WC. The rest,as you said Boula,Bouma & Mathijsen are in their last legs. Kuyt & VDV will probably be too old to be Valuable Subs next year with a new generation of talent coming

van Bommel is 35. He's almost definitely not going to be a key Dutch player at 37, even with the family connection. This is compounded by the fact the Dutch have Nigel de Jong and Strootman ready to step into his place/role, so phasing him out after the tournament won't leave a gaping hole in the side (from the footballing side, anyway; leadership is a different matter).

On what grounds? Being fat and running riot through minnows?
At least Klose is humble and respectful.

(I'm obviously a victim of pro-German bias, but even if I wasn't German, I'd pick the humble Klose over superstar Ronaldo any day TBH, I hate the pedestral flair players get put on. Not that R9 wasn't one of the best strikers ever, I just think that doesn't entitle you to anything.)

Klose is the guy who only became an established pro in his mid-twenties, he refused to take a penalty, claiming that he was not fouled inside the box, twice that I know of, he even called Gomez the better striker than himself, while he was still starting ahead of him, at a press conference. The amount of humble this guy got is ridiculous.

TBH he could be a shit player and I'd still like him. ^^
