Viva's thoughts mirror mine on Robben. I was personally surprised that Schweinsteiger didn't take the penalty in extra time, however he went to the other end of the pitch to stand by Neuer and couldn't watch, so there must be something said for Robben at least in his willingness to take it, even if I still would have asked Kroos or Piggy to take it.

vanDEEZ wrote:the pk lineup was bizarre. why would neuer be forced to take a kick- that was the worst decision for me. fortunately he made his but had he missed his confidence would be shot for the rest of the pks

then olic- why? he has barely played. kroos and robben should have grown some balls and stepped up. i understand why robben didnt take one because his confidence was shit but kroos grow some balls

because Robben missed one penalty so he made the GK shoot instead of Robben ?

I would so have loved to have seen your face when Drogba took the Penalty.

It must have been so similar to mine when Dragba scored the first goal on Valencia at the Bridge.

Also I immediatly thought of Tymo at least being one of the five penalty takers, he does have a bit of the Ballack/Frings in him. Though my memory isn't all that great, but doesn't he have a good track record?

Anyway, he's the kind of player, I'd expect to take a penalty. Well, I guess Don Jupp had his reasons.

Robben was still the guy with enough balls to step up and take it though so kudos.

Schweinsteiger couldn't even look, Kroos wanted nothing to do with pens. Gomez was probably doubting himself as well.

I disagree that Ribery was awful, I felt that his absence was quite noticeable when he went off injured. Olic could achieve little in his time on the wing and Bayern's greater predictability in the closing stages reflected not just their tentativeness with the game on a knife edge but the effect that his injury had on their possession game. Even if he failed to be decisive he was still a positive influence, the entire team began to lose their composure with both he and Mueller off the pitch.

Isn't he the first choice penalty taker anyway?*

It's kind of implied he would then take the penalty, yes?

Yes he is, and that's what is making Dostoevsky and me ponder how he came to be the first choice penalty taker.

Sure sure, that's a given. We were just wondering that question in general. Because I really don't understand how he ever got chosen. Not that he's particularly bad or anything, it's just that I'd look for different qualities in my prime penalty taker.

I'd want a Ballack/Frings/Lampard/Mark van Bommel/Xabi Alonso kind of guy. And Schweinsteiger is the closest of Bayerns starters to that mold of player.

I was just "thinking out loud", it really wasn't because of this match.

Robben was missing everything today. I remember agreeing with a guy next to me that we would rather almost anyone take the penalty than Robben just based on the way he was playing. Neuer>>Robben :coffee:

Napoli have the same situation in my eyes, I'm unsure why Cavani takes them, however I feel that it is possible that he's the best of a bad lot because Hamsik is simply awful.

I don't get that feeling with Robben though, even if I don't have confidence in him I still believe it's an issue of the force of personality in the dressing room. If so, it has its positives and weaknesses, in the end the willingness to take it is key, even if you miss because it's how you bounce back, even after several misses such as Robben has had this season.

Ronaldo is actually a great PK taker though lol

Robben has a history of misses/near misses with pens. He missed one against Dortmund for crying out loud a few days ago lol

He missed against BVB just a few days before. And the pen he scored in the semi's was really fortunate imo.

This thread was kinda kneejerk, agreed, but me mad.

Seriously though, I just miss the Ballack/Frings days when when you saw one of those guys put the ball down you knew it was going in. Unstoppable net-wrenching toe launched laser beams.

These guys place their shots Sad

And Schweini completely failed it with that feint. Just put that shit in.

Agreed, very bad luck but then again, in my opinion, when you're in the last decisive penalty to tie a Champions League final you go with what works 95% of the time which is a straight, hard shot and not the fancy shit that might not work.
