First it was the Mayans who played a somewhat similar game , eons before the English and before the Greeks or the Chineze had their own "ball games".

The English invented the rules and eventualy made the game suitable for crowd attendance , which as big as it gets , though they didn't invent it , they just modernised the original idea .

Wouldnt have gone to a shootout had Riquelme stayed on and Messi played. No doubt in my mind we would have continued to dominate and control the game til the final whistle.
