Re: Hoeness launches attack on the plastic clubs
Well, in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund nicely compete without huge injections of money. They simply improved their scouting and strategies and as you can see they are two times German champions now in the last two years (and that after they were virtually bankrupt in 2005). Okay, they crashed out of the CL this season, but nouveau-rich ManCity were only slightly more successful there, and I'm pretty sure that the BVB will do far better next season.Blue wrote:So back to the underdog story in Europe. So how does a club in Europe challenge the likes of United, Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern, etc without the heavy injection of money?
It is no coincidence that historical goods team are still dominating the football world. Sure you have teams like Everton and Liverpool who are no longer top clubs, and that what happens when they lose strong financial backing.
Madrid and United of the world has a competitive advantage in plunking youngsters also. The best young and global talents usually end up at those places. In America the draft system allows the weaker times to choose ahead of the top teams, when it comes to picking the best young talents.
Big injection of money is the only chance clubs have against the top European clubs.

^^Villarreal did aswell. They got promoted from the 2nd division and by good managment came 2nd in la liga and losing in the semi-final after they had outplayed arsenal in the 2nd leg.
Now that team was an underdog

Uli, never afraid of speaking his mind, you have to love him. Typically I always agree with him and I will this time as well.
It's not fair for some teams to have an owner who can spend millions on their team while others can take what they make from their team which is considerably less than what a rich person can give a club.

Lol.
Not surprised, the guy had the nerve to criticize Hoffenheim for getting some minor investment , I could imagine what he thinks of Chelsea.

Never could understand why Europeans hate the Chelsea's of the world. Must be something to do with their hate and for capitalism.
What? I disagree. I hardly see Chelsea nor City as underdogs in any sense. They bought a bunch of players for ridiculous amounts of money, and became a good team that way. Hardly an underdog.
Americans would rather have new emerging teams that worked their way up by working their socks off and having talented players that punched above their weight. Not this "buy everyone" stuff.
I'm American and I hate Chelsea and City
All of this, of course, in my opinion.

frankly, before the oil money bought City, they were a proud club with one of the most faithful following in England. It's disrespectful to call City is plastic club as far as i am concerned. You might question the way the owners now run things, but the club still represent the blue collar people of Manchester.

But Dortmund is not an European power and only relative in Germany. But they have a long way to go. I am not sure if they can continue on the long run. They have an opportunity since there is Bayern Munich and the rest of the pack in Germany.

Villarreal is a an example of how good scouting and management can only take you so far.
It will be a very long time and maybe never before they reach that status in their history.

Hoeness has a point here, he is often right, but he is a big mouthed asshole who always takes the moral ground and rubbishes other teams, always finding something to complain about. I really hope Chelsea wins and follow that up with a 1 billion plan to turn a power station into a stadium

And as I mentioned - ManCity have quite a way to go, too - and they do have an enormous influx of money they didn't earn themselves, while Dortmund fully live within their means. (And if you mention the loan that Bayern gave them to stay afloat - that way a one-time loan only and much less than the usual money injected by sugar daddies).

Re: Hoeness launches attack on the plastic clubs
Its disrispectful to call City a plastic club, or anyone for that matter, but you have to admit that they are using money inappropriately and some clubs might feel cheated by that... OK, it was a stage in their history where they HAD to overpay to make a splash and establish themselves as a big club, but tell that to Valencia, who have to sell their big players because of debt and make do rather well, and you can understand why your club is disliked by many.

Invests? How is the most net spending over 8 years (Chelsea) or even more in 4 (City) just 'investing'?
A club should be financed and gain wealth by their success and the fans they win over through their success, their fans shouldn't be bought.
Credit to the Manchester City fans who've been proud of their club through thick and thin but finding an original Manchester City fan today is like finding a nickel in a pit of dimes (Pardon the money reference )

Re: Hoeness launches attack on the plastic clubs
City is going to get new fans because we're a good club again. We have lost 1 whole generation to United, and I think we will win more younger kids again like the old days.
It's normal that good clubs have new. It happens to every single club, and I never expected us to be an exception.
I don't think people start following City because of the money. What I mean by that is that people don't go "omg, dat club haz millions so ima support them now".
As a lifelong blue, I think NEUTRALS see a good team with good players. They like the football, start watching more and more, and eventually begin to develop an affection for the club.
What I don't agree with is when someone already supported a club, now want to follow City because we're good.
I'm all for neutrals, but literal glory hunters, I despise because that is too much Manchester United.

Re: Hoeness launches attack on the plastic clubs
So what?
I don't see us criticizing Eto for trying to develop football in Cameroon. Why are you criticizing a loyal Chelsea fan like Abramovich for trying to develop Chelsea's football?
You want to criticize people , Criticize Malaga and Chelsea Sheikhs....who i bet didn't give a shit about them before they wanted a football club to play with.Criticizing Abra for trying to get the club he loves is pointless.
He criticized Hopp for investing in his own youth club (Hoffenheim) and then bitchslapped them by buying Gustavo.
He has unnecessary hate for clubs who are being financially supported.

When I lived in Spain, the reason you state is the same reason that Madrid was so hated. Even more hated than Barca.
You think I give a shit that people hate my club? Let the jealous *bleep* hate. Haters are gonna hate anyways.

Re: Hoeness launches attack on the plastic clubs
Some Madrid fans are still butthurt....Personally I really hope Bayern wins this final. Nothing will by more joyful than beating 3 top big spender and tittle buyers in 1 champion league Campaign and then winning it in your own stadium.
Manchester City and Real Madrid has been brushed aside, it's only Chelsea left.
and for those saying, oh, oh!! I'm not going to support Bayern now because of this or that, seriously who cares about you and your support, it has no effect on us by any slightest concern, not even in the weight of grain of an atom...
I fully support Hoeness on this, that's why I always respect Arsenal and Bayern, even Barcelona are not among this league
