Chances of Lamps or JT surpassing Zola?
Both are rated as our next best players ever after the little Italian and with them coming to the end of their Careers, what do you think would make them surpass Zola as our GOAT? Winning the CL? Continuing to play at this level for a few more years or nothing? Have they, in your mind already passed Zola?
I personally think Lampard is better than Zola, simply because if it wasn't for a certain Brazilian Magician, Lamps would have won a Balloon D'Or. He is our best ever Goal scoring midfielder and is a real role model for tthe club. He is also showing that he can adapt positions in his older age. Should he score the winner in Munich, I would have no doubt he is our best player.
JT on the other hand is Chelsea but I for some reason don't see him as a better player than Lampard. He will probably en his career our third best player ever.
Thoughts? Maybe I am biased because I love Super Frank.

If we win the CL, then JT can become the best captain even if he is not recognized as the best player.
It's a hard call between Lampard and Zola but winning the CL is minimum for Lampard to surpass him. Plus, he still has to break a few more records and improve his goal scoring record. Another season and he'd be there

Re: Chances of Lamps or JT surpassing Zola?
John is already our best ever Captain, he got that title long ago.
So if Lamps guides us to CL in Munich, and scores 20+ more goals with us, he would overtake Zola?
It is a Shame JT won't play inbthe final, it is a real career defining moment.

Re: Chances of Lamps or JT surpassing Zola?
For me, no.
It would take a lot to surpass what Zola did for us. He almost single handedly put Chelsea on the global map. He made everyone around him better. I'm not old enough to remember the 1950s when we also had a good team(obviously, I'm 22 ) but I rememer the 90s very well. Zola changed the club. Yes we had RDM, Gullit, Poyet and the likes, but Zola made them better players on his own. I give Zola more credit again because we didn't have Roman when he was with us. Its hard to beat the joy and glory he brought to the club and the fans.
I remember when RA tookover and he wanted Zola to stay, but Zola refused, because he had made a promise to his hometown team months before RA took over. That is just one example of how much class he had.
Lamps is 2nd for me. He might become our record scorer but he'll still be 2nd for me. He has truely become a legend. When he first came, fans were disgusted at the fact that we spent £11M(which was huge then) on a "bum" from West Ham of all places. My uncle used to rant about how disappointed he was with Bates for such a stupid bit of business. Well today he happily admits to have been proven wrong. There's a reason Mourinho didn't sell him when he first arrived.
JT has been immense for us. Immense, but he has also brought a lot of trouble and controversy to the club. Apart from the 9/11 disgrace, there's the Bridge incident and the Ferdinand incident. On the pitch, he has been almost faultless(bar Moscow) but off the pitch, he has not been a role model for young Chelsea kids. You can't get that No.1 spot if you aren't even a role model for the young ones. Of course I support him through everything, but he has brought the club down time and time again. That being said, it doesn't change the fact that he has been the most successful captain in the clubs history. Stays at No.3 for me, and a close one at that(No.4 for me is Wisey).
Zola remains No.1 for me and it would take a lot to surpass him.

He already is. He's the captain with the most trophies. Second most is Wisey.Soul wrote:If we win the CL, then JT can become the best captain even if he is not recognized as the best player.

Re: Chances of Lamps or JT surpassing Zola?
What barretinator said basically.. Zola literally carried the team on his shoulders, he was an inspiration to the team.
Lamps had lots of help from people around him, doesn't mean that he is a bad player but Zola did something close to impossible. Lamps have to cover a lot of ground before he surpasses Zola. He might have more achievements but, its not all that counts.

Re: Chances of Lamps or JT surpassing Zola?
what about Drogba? to sm up how massive hes been for the club think about how at Chelsea Drogba has benched the likes of Torres, Sheva, Crespo, Pizzaro among so many more. imo the best three words to sum up the Abaramovich era are Terry, Lampard, Drogba as since RA came in they have been the spine fo the team and imo they are amoungst the greatest players to ever play for the club
imo if we can beat Bayern Terry, Lampard and Drogba will go down as the three best in the clubs history as those three have been the core of our first PL win, our first domestic double and our first CL win among so much more
as for ranking the three i think it would go Terry, Lmpard, Drogba given JT and Lamps are English and not only is Terry our captain but hes a one club player and arguably the most successful player to come out of our youth academy since Ray Wilkins
still i dont want to understate Zola, he carried the chelsea side that qualified for the CL before RA was associated with the club and in the league his goals and performances made us alot more then a flash in the pan and he was an amzing footballer and hes the only player to ever where the chelsea shirt who can genuinely compete with those three

Re: Chances of Lamps or JT surpassing Zola?
They are already, honestly, I don't think many other people can compete with them at the top of our all time players, maybe Drogba, Osgood and Harris but for me, the top three are clear cut.
I suppose you are Right Barret, what would Lampard have to do to overtake Zola?

Re: Chances of Lamps or JT surpassing Zola?
This brings back memories.. when we had the No.1 keeper, defender, Left back, defensive mid, attacking mid, winger and forward under Jose Mourinho
All of them would are already legends. What Barret said changed my mind. No one could really take Zola's place
