Since its free2play, Im thinking of giving it a try. Is it any good actually? Poor mans wow?

A lot harder than WoW and pretty much 95% PvP. So no, not a poor mans WoW at all.

And that's what turned Americans/Europeans off. Came in with the expectations that it'd be [easy] and casual like a super pretty WoW with wings and what they encountered was a hardcore Korean MMO.

"Classic" Aion suffered early on because from around level 38-50 there was a massive quest shortage and levelling pretty much was just a grind. Later patches rectified that though so getting to max level is not an endless grind but the reputation stuck.

"WoW-like" is the last simile I'd use to describe Aion. The only thing they really have in common is that fact that they're MMO's. They're both very good games with different target audiences and objectives. It's something akin to DotA/HoN and LoL. Fundamentally the same genre but play out completely differently and WoW mirrors LoL in that it's easy/casual and thus hugely popular while DotA/HoN has a much higher skillcap, and thus smaller audience. Both good games who share fundamental concepts, but completely different.

Visually this game is GOAT imo. From graphics to customization and design

Don't get me wrong with me describing the game as 95% PvP - it's still a great PvE game but you don't play Aion to not PvP. Kinda like buying BF3 just for the campaign.

meh. dont like it.. considering whats coming out at the moment - TERA , blade and soul, C9 , ... all these have amazing graphics

while aion reminds me of lineage's graphics .. old..

shame tera and blade and soul are p2p but c9 will be free if you want wait to play that one.. but its not open world its dungeon system

Has anyone here tried out Secret World? I don't know a thing about the game, other than that it's made by Funcom; the Norwegian game developer behind the Age of Conan MMO. I wonder how you're supposed to progress in the game, if it's not level or class- based.

One thing though, F2P accounts on the EU server are pretty gimped. Not to the point that it's not worth it, but if want to take this game seriously (I.E. Take advantage of it's epic PVP and one of the best [PvP] end-games around) you will have to upgrade your account.

even this which is free.. look game play is different you dont just target and kill is non-targeting mmo which requires more skill, this is the c9 but its not out yet as open beta




anyway i know its down to the person likes so these games im refering to are not open world except for tera.. im not sure about blade and soul.. which not being open world is a hugh minus either way you pay for those two.. ive never paid for an mmo

so since aion is free maybe is a good choice.. i advice to try c9 once it comes out in open beta should not be far from opening and its free too

Wait what? You're calling one entire genre more modern than the other? So an Action RPG based MMO is more modern than a fundamentally turn based RPG?

Be careful what you're saying, because at this rate you're saying CoD > Mass Effect.

And lol @ You insisting Continent of the Ninth is a good game. It's as good as Vindictus which is essentially all hype and 0 non-recycled gameplay + 100% customer exploitation.

c9 is actually better than vindictus, the pvp is a lot lot better

i was playing this kind of mmo like aion for almost 10 years
and im past it.

i see it more like a non targeting mmo > targeting mmo aka action mmo > turn based one

the upcoming generation has improved the action mmo in every aspect more and more and still coming with improved graphics and pvp system

the turn based one is still the same.. i see almost no difference in all this kind of mmos out there. all the same.. lineage allover again.
so to me this seems old

but it is also the taste of the person and as it looks you like turn based more
but im sure year after year more and more people will prefer action mmo instead of turn based

Ive been playing alot of Aion lately, still a noob tho. Visually stunning? Not sure if serious, I run this maxed out with no probs but the graphics for me are dated to 05-06 year.

Still poor mans Silkroad for me.

Well game graphics in general haven't progressed since 2008 because of consoles >.>

Why would PC developers, especially make mmorpgs hold in because of the consoles, Wow, Guild wars, Aion etc. have nothing in common to consoles. I could understand FF XIV

Think for a minute. MMO publishers want as broad an audience as possible and to have the game able to be run on as many comps as possible. Don't be fooled by the increased texture sizes/polycount because that's an easy way to make a game look better - particles, physics, light radiosity and shadowing are much harder. Modern mmorpg's don't look any better than Neverwinter Nights 2 and that's a 2006 game. It took more than a year for CryEngine 3 too even approach CryEngine 2 and Frostbite 2 is at a similar level.

Don't be fooled by DirectX numbers either - DX11 is just an optimization of the DX10 capabilities so it could be handled better.

I barely understood what you said so I take this with a pinch of salt.

If I want to play an mmorpg with a pretty graphics I would have played GW2, which I will soon. Easily the best one in the market atm.

In laymans terms, publishers want the game to run on crappy computers so that's why mmo's have dated graphics, including GW2. FPS's were at the forefront of graphics, hence why games like Doom 3, Far Cry and Crysis came out before people could max out the settings. Nowadays the genre doesn't even keep up with 4 year old titles.

Ever since Crysis came out people with high end rigs could still play the game adequately with 30+ fps. If there was an graphics engine which was developed way ahead of its time it was GTA IV imo.

How was GTA IV engine ahead of it's time lol ? Just because most PC's couldnt keep up with the game ? Well that's because it was a fkin terrible port !

Huh? GTA IV was a terrible port which was why it had massive performance issues on the PC. Take a look at Just Cause 2, also a multiplatform sandbox game but superceded GTA easily graphically. You're just making yourself look silly by praising the GTA IV engine

30 fps is unsatisfactory anyways for PC games and it took $800 GPU's from the next generation to be able to handle Crysis at high settings and you could only max it out if you had 2 GPU's so I don't get this high end rigs could max it out nonsense. You see can see how much Consoles have gimped graphics most in the CryEngine 3 version of Crysis. The view distance is tiny, shadows and physics are only rendered every second frame and that's just at a resolution of 1280x720. Oh and the textures of course are reduced.

This is obviously going nowhere, thanks alot for ruining my thread.

Anyway What about Guild Wars, people still play it? I dont feel like upgrading my comp just yet for the sake of max graphics for GW2.

Well Tera is f2p now so you should give that a go. I'm still puzzled as to how you can run Aion maxed out and comment on its graphics when you say your comp can't max out GW2?

Have you seen the textures in the game? Its awful.

They make a good job on the equipment and character but you can see some awful stuff in the landscapes.
What can you expect from an modified cryengine 1 anyway.

Im switching to GW2 soon tho.
