Does our backline need to be higher?
Everytime we press, there's a gap between the defense and midfield. So when teams get past our pressing, they have a chance to run at our defense, since there's a gap.
If our backline was higher, they'd run into it/get surrounded from midfielders/forwards.
Pepe and Ramos are quick, which means we can play a highline.

Re: Does our backline need to be higher?
Nope. Our backline is high enough, we have conceded 1/3 of our goals from counters, because the defensive line cant cope with opposition counters imo. Playing with even higher backline would make us completely vulnreable to opponent counters. Its fine as it is atm.

Re: Does our backline need to be higher?
we are pretty vulnerable to counter even though pepe is very fast. so no.
defensively the area where we need most improvement is defending set pieces/corners.

Re: Does our backline need to be higher?
The reason why I think teams can counter is because there's a gap between midfield and defense.
No gap.

How is he whining? He is asking a question...
The higher back line would me us even vulnerable to counter attack imo Opponents would just try more through balls and long balls to the backs of CB's.

Do you trust Arbeloa, Ramos, Pepe and Marcelo to stay focused all game?

Re: Does our backline need to be higher?
You don't even know why the gap is there.
Hint: it's not becouse of us not playing a highline, becouse Xabi plays very deep, almost CB deep. AKA he does not leave gaps when he plays central.
Hint 2: It is related to our fullbacks.
Figure it out.

Alonso doesn't leave a gap between the CB's?

Yeh. Why wouldn't they be focused?
I feel like Ramos and Marcelo are out of position a lot, and sometimes Pepe has to bailout Ramos.

Wasn't it Carvalho though who kept messing up the offside trap?

Re: Does our backline need to be higher?
100% spot on MT.
I was just talking about this with my cousin during the Villareal game.
There was such a gap between our Mids and CB's. That's why they were tearing us up in the beginning.
Not so much we need to play a higher line but sometimes it would be great if our mids fell back onto our CBs to minimize the gap when we are defending .

Yeh true, but since we press, it would make sense to play a highline imo.

Re: Does our backline need to be higher?
Nope it's fine as it is last time we tried to push our backline any higher we got whipped 5 nil, so no thanks
Our defence is fine the way it is set out and the way it performs
The only issue in defence where we have any real problems and should be concerned is defending set pieces.
We are the most direct and attacking team in Europe, we avergae more shots and more shots on goal and more goals per game than any other team in Europe right now.
Yet for defence we are the 5th in Europe for conceding the least shots per game. Only Barcelona, Bayern, Dortmund and Marseille have better numbers. All those teams that have better numbers than us appear 8th and below in terms of the most shots per game in Europe.
For the amount of attacking and stretching our team does we actually do very well in terms of conceding goals in the run of play.
Our defense the way it is setup is fine, the gap is fine, especially when we have players like Khedira and Marcelo who transition defence out of midfield so well.
I'll say again we just need to work on set piece defending more than anything else.

Re: Does our backline need to be higher?
I think we've tried the high line before, the offside trap isn't Sergio Ramos' forte that's for sure, it is often he who breaks the line and plays attackers onside.
And this is a question not whining, some members are very rude that's for sure...

Re: Does our backline need to be higher?
People ignoring the most important factor.......we won't see Ramos rushing out of defense to make a goregous intereception/tackle.
I rather concede a couple more goals if I get to watch those every game TBH.
