Football legends: Butterball Smithy
How underrated he's? If he played for Madrid or Barca he would've won like 10 Ballon D'ors.
Great manager too, had a 83 winning percentage with Wrexham Rovers back in 1892.
How do you rate him?

Re: Football legends: Butterball Smithy
No one on here really knows anything about him apart from what they learnt from Wikipedia lol.
Too difficult to compare his time with today. Football is much more competitive nowadays.

The man invented a lot of dribbling techniques in use today. It's funny how people call themselves football fans and have no idea who he is. Sad, really.
Apparently, my great grandfather was a huge fan.

I'm sure there's other influential people in footballing history who you do not know of and I assume you call yourself a football fan so don't be so harsh.ronalessi wrote:The man invented a lot of dribbling techniques in use today. I have never even heard his name ever brought up and I can't even find him on google or anything else.
Wouldn't it be better of you to tell us something about him?
What nationality, position, teams he played for ect?

invented dribbling
like the first guy who milked a cow invented milk and otherwise there is simply no way we would ever know of this substance?

Re: Football legends: Butterball Smithy
In fact, Butterball Smithy was the first player to ever score a goal.
Its also reported that the 1864-1865 season he scored a goal that beautiful, it counted as two.

In fact, He was a false goalkeeper/striker playing manager that season and inventor of kicking the ball out as a goalie, then running out recieving it in the middle to then score a goal from that pass.
Until messi does that, his records are nothing

I already corrected Lex on this....Smithy had the win percentage with Real Bilbao and not Wrexham Rovers.

My grandfather would tell me stories about how his dad would tell him Butterball was the one of the best he's ever seen.

George "Butterball" Smithy. He got the nickname Butterball because, as a child, his parents couldn't afford to get him a football so he'd practice kick-ups with a knob of frozen butter

I don't know much about football, but people who know football inside and out definitely know Smithy. So, sorry for being harsh.
Did you figure it all out or do you still want me to give you a google link?

Re: Football legends: Butterball Smithy
Cruyff invented Cruyff turn. Smithy invented dribbling techniques as well. Let me see if any of you can name some of them.
