Arsenal v Newcastle United, Monday 12th March, 8pm, Emirates Stadium, Premier League, Sky Sports 1

Arsenal v Newcastle Preview Tumblr_m0idi6Q8cI1r44ecqo1_500
Arsenal marginally failed to take the AC Milan tie to extra time after a 3-0 win.

Premier League

1. Man C 66pts
2. Man U 64pts
3. Spurs 53pts
4. Arsenal 49pts
----------------
5. Chelsea 49pts
6. Newcastle 44pts

Arsenal looking for fifth successive league victory

Wins against Blackburn (7-1), Sunderland (2-1), Spurs (5-2) and Liverpool (2-1) - three in which Arsenal have come from behind to win - have propelled the gunners to within touching distance of third-placed Spurs. With the 'enemy' - as Sagna calls them - losing again at Everton on Saturday, Arsene Wenger knows his side can move just one point behind Harry Redknapp's side with a win on Monday night against Newcastle. The 3-0 win against AC Milan last week increased the gunners' momentum, even if it was ultimately failure, with Arsenal losing 4-3 on aggregate. Three points against Newcastle would mean five successive wins in the Premier League for Arsenal - a feat Wenger's men have already achieved this season, back in October-November.

Newcastle in indifferent form ahead of Emirates trip

Alan Pardew's Newcastle didn't taste defeat this season until mid-November, when they lost at Manchester City. Since that afternoon, the Magpies have won only 5 of their 15 league games, losing 7. Pardew hasn't seen his side win in the league since a win against Aston Villa on February 5th. They have conceded 10 goals in their last 2 trips to London (5-0 defeat to Spurs, 5-2 defeat to Fulham). In Yohan Cabaye and Cheick Tiote, Newcastle have two impressive central-midfielders, both missed the defeat at Spurs. Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse provide a severe goal threat up top.

Match Facts

* The Gunners have had a player sent off in their last three meetings with Newcastle.

* Newcastle are unbeaten in their last three league meetings with Arsenal (1-0, 4-4, 0-0)

* Newcastle have won just two of their last 18 Premier League games against Arsenal.

* Robin van Persie has scored four goals in his last five games against Newcastle and 43 in his last 44 Premier League matches.

* The Dutchman has scored 21 goals in his last 20 Premier League games at the Emirates, including 14 in the last 11.

* Arsenal have won nine of their last 12 Premier League home games and lost just one.

* Newcastle have conceded 21 goals in their last eight Premier League away matches.

Players to Watch

Gervinho

Arsenal v Newcastle Preview ?m=02&d=20120307&t=2&i=579544920&w=460&fh=&fw=&ll=&pl=&r=2012-03-07T115448Z_1_BTRE8260X3F00_RTROPTP_0_SOCCER-CHAMPIONS

The Ivorian winger has had an indifferent debut season at the Emirates. Four goals and seven assists mean a decent return from the £10.8m former Lille man, but there is still much more room for improvement. Gervinho was decent against AC Milan this week, but only in patches. Involvement in the African cup of nations was a distraction, particularly as the 24-year old missed a vital penalty in the final, but now with just 11 league games to focus on, the attacker can keep his attentions on helping Arsenal finish in the Champions League places.

Yohan Cabaye

Arsenal v Newcastle Preview Yohan-Cabaye-Newcastle-Un-007

Another former Lille player who won the league last season, Cabaye has had an impressive debut season up north. Technically astute, intelligent, hard-working and a good set-piece taker, the France international will be hoping to partner Yann M'Vila in the European Championships this summer. Pardew's £4.3m purchase is one of the bargains of the campaign.

Team News

Arsenal

Abou Diaby (hamstring), Jack Wilshere (ankle), Francis Coquelin (hamstring), Per Mertesacker (ankle) and Emmanuel Frimpong (knee) are all unavailable.

Theo Walcott (hip), Mikel Arteta (concussion) and Aaron Ramsey (ankle) are in the squad, whilst Andre Santos (ankle) and Yossi Benayoun (illness) could be involved. Kieran Gibbs (groin) should pass a fitness test.

Newcastle

Peter Lovenkrands (thigh), Leon Best (knee), Sammy Ameobi (knee), Steven Taylor (achilles) and Sylvain Marveaux (groin) are all unavailable.

Manager's pre-match views

Arsene Wenger

"We want to finish as high as we can. It will be difficult because we know that we face a massive battle there with Tottenham, Chelsea, Newcastle and maybe Liverpool. We have created the momentum but we know until the end of the season that every game will be a massive one for us. What is at stake is to be in the top four, if possible in the top three, but it will be difficult for everybody."

Alan Pardew

“I thought we were fortunate to get a 0-0 draw when we played Arsenal at the start of the season. But we just did enough to get the draw. I think they’re a different team now. It was well documented at the start of the season they had players coming in at the last minute and they were all over the place. Now they are starting to get themselves sorted and the younger players are playing with confidence. If the rumours are true Arsene Wenger has money to spend in the summer, you have to say they’re perhaps only one or two players away. They’ve obviously got issues with Robin van Persie they need to resolve, but they’re close to being challengers for the title next season in my opinion.”

Interesting team Sam, i have a feeling both Ben Arfa and Cisse will start but your team is probably more likely to get us an result.

Great preview as usual, congrats on the win btw.

EVERY SINGLE TIME we're in prime position for anything (moving up top/2nd/3rd/closing the deficit against rivals) we end up bottling it hard and i wouldn't be at all surprised to be held to a draw or even a slim loss

Prove me wrong, Gunners

You are right Lex..
Another oppertunity calls us.. Spuds there for the taking..
Being a home match and after gaining some sort of a momentum i expect nothing short of a victory here...
And i will miss this match again as i will be on my way to work..
But no regrets as i missed the derby and most of the Liverpool match.. And they turned out to be amazing..

I think Ben Arfa is going to start according to Pardew: http://www.sundaysun.co.uk/sport/newcastle-united/2012/03/11/hatem-ben-arfa-ready-for-big-test-at-arsenal-79310-30506001/

If Santos is really fit, he should start instead of Gibbs - not that he's such an improvement defensively but atleast he's going to help us more attacking wise. In any case Ben Arfa will destroy that right wing.

I hope Pardew decides to continue with the 4-4-2, because it's not really working for them. If we screw this

4-4-2 works if Ba drops deep and we dont play like Stoke, if he doesnt and we do play like Stoke its f*cking abysmal.

Dont expect anything from this game i just want to see some positive football.

Great work as always

We really need to win this game and not bottle it. from 13 points to 1. Imagine that!

I will stick with the same team as we played against Spurs/liverpool. Maybe bring gervinho/oxlade in but benayoun is fine as well.

Rosicky deserves to keep his place. If we are winning comfortably, then 30 mins for chamakh will be nice

"I know we won there last season and we can take a positive from that. We can go there with confidence to build on the second half performance against Sunderland."We can get at Arsenal. After the week they've had they could be feeling sorry for themselves.“It's going to be tough no matter what, but I'm sure we will enjoy it."
