Your Ma has good taste, too, it seems Very Happy

Well, tonight is the hour of truth! Cluj are very likely not just rolling over, and Basel did lose two very important players with Shaqiri and Xhaka. But I have high hopes that the new guys Salah and Diaz will step in. And of course there is always this great young goalie Very Happy

CL 2012/13 Qualification Play-off FC Basel vs CFR Cluj:

FC Basel - Page 4 Fcb-te11

FC Basel - Page 4 Fcb10

FC Basel - Page 4 Cluj10

44.) 1:0 - beautiful goal by Marco Streller!
66.) 1:1 - Modou Sougou
Basel get punished for squandering too many chances.
71.) 1:2 - Modou Sougou
And again Basel's defense was missing in action and nowhere in the vicinity of the Cluj attacker

FT - FC Basel 1:2 CFR Cluj

Basel was actually the more attacking side and ran towards the Cluj goal and then they allowed Cluj altogether 5 counters (one in the 1st half, 4 in the second) where practically the whole defense got totally overrun
Luckily "only" two goals for Cluj resulted from them (two of the chances were nicely saved by Yann Sommer, one luckily by the goalpost). On the other side, Basel missed a good handful of sitters. Playing like this, a team just can't win.

It will be interesting to see if Basel can turn this around away in Cluj next week.

CL Qualifier CFR Cluj vs FC Basel (2nd leg)

FC Basel - Page 4 Basel-14

FC Basel - Page 4 Basel-11

FC Basel - Page 4 Basel-13

The first leg ended FC Basel 1:2 CFR Cluj, so Basel needs a 2:0 or 3:1 win.

FC Basel - Page 4 Ys-0110

Things don't look too well yet as Cluj is much more dangerous in front of the Basel goal than vice versa. In the 6th minute, Yann Sommer could just avoid the lead for Cluj by a beautiful save, but in the 20th minute, Kapetanos scored the 1:0 for Cluj. Now Basel need 2 goals to extra time and 3 goals to win outright...

Basel got a penalty for a foul in the box, but Alex Frei skies it in the 43th minute

I really hope (& fervently pray) that UEFA wakes-up and put some decent money into the Europa League. Not only clubs like Basel (& the horde from Spain and Germany) will benefit the EL actually deserves it.

I agree. Although, with today's performance, Basel would be ripped apart in the CL, and I guess Cluj will suffer a similar fate. So maybe Basel is currently actually better off in the EL. And the Basel board fortunately didn't plan with CL money in any case.

Today's Swiss Super League match: FC Basel vs FC Zürich

FC Basel - Page 4 Logos10

FC Basel: : Sommer; Steinhöfer, Sauro, Dragovic, Park; Diaz, Cabral, F. Frei, Stocker; A. Frei, Streller

FC Zürich: Da Costa; Djimsiti, Beda, Teixeira, Benito; Glarner, Kukeli, Buff, Drmic; Gavranovic, Chiumiento

FT FCB 0:0 FCZ

One could mostly summarize this match with one word: "Yawn."

Sleep Sleep Sleep Sleep Sleep Sleep Sleep Sleep Sleep Sleep Sleep Sleep Sleep Sleep Sleep

As for something different - Yann Sommer was voted Man of the Match for the games Cluj vs Basel: http://fcb.ch/news/show/byItemID/de-de/10044/28551/16/7

FC Basel - Page 4 Yann-510
(Photo: Sacha Grossenbacher/fcb.ch)

On a scale of 6 (very good) to 1 (abysmal), he got a 5.09. Cabral on second place got a 3.49 and Alexander Frei with a 3.09 reached the third place. All in all, the Basel team was a real disappointment in that match with the sole exception of Yann Sommer, a fact one could easily see from the ratings.

Same in the Tageswoche.ch, btw: http://www.tageswoche.ch/de/2012_34/sport/454512/nur-sommer-war-auf-der-hoehe-die-einzelkritiken-zu-cluj-basel.htm

A bit tousled after the match, but so cute anyway <3

The goalies: Markus Wölfli and Yann Sommer

Probably the busiest man on the pitch today: Yann Sommer

Arrgggllll! Now it happened after all - a slightly deflected shot by Zarate left Yann Sommer no chance and so it is 1:0 for YB now in the 50th minute.

Finally - in the 73th minute, Streller heads in a cross by Steinhöfer, making it 1:1. Not quite deserved, but what the heck. BTW, I really want to see a videos with a collection of Yann Sommer's great saves of today!

Today's Swiss Super League match: FC Basel vs FC Sion:

FC Basel (4-4-2): Sommer; P. Degen, Sauro, Dragovic, Voser; Salah, Diaz, Cabral, Stocker; A. Frei, Streller.

FC Sion (4-4-2): Vanins; Sauthier, Aislan, Dingsdag, Bühler; Margairaz, Gattuso, Crettenand, Serey Die, Leo, Lafferty

42. - 1:0 (Philip Degen)
44. - 1:1 (Gnnaro Gattuso)

HT: FC Basel 1:1 FC Sion

The Swiss TV is amazing - after there was quite some controversy about some referee decisions in the last matches, they decided to pay the refs of this match a visit in the half time break. Maybe to figure out whether they plan some conspiracy against FC Sion this time?

Gahh. As I was so happy celebrating RWO's away victory over BMG II with a resounding 5:2, I totally missed the match of Basel against Lausanne-Sports

And when I went through the MBM of the match, I had to read that a big blunder of Yann Sommer cost Basel the victory. (Although you could just as well say that the Basel strikers cost them the victory as they missed a couple of chances that could have put Basel 3 or 4 goals up in the first half!). Ah well, next time I won't miss the match and I'm sure then he'll be in top form again!

Saturday's Swiss Super League match: Lausanne-Sport vs FC Basel:

Lausanne-Sport: Favre; Chakhsi, Katz, Sonnerat, Facchinetti; Rodrigo, Gabri; Tafer (62. Khelifi), Sanogo, Malonga (79. Kamber); Moussilou (86. Roux).

Basel: Sommer; Steinhöfer, Dragovic, Schär, Voser; Cabral; Salah (72. David Degen), Fabian Frei, Stocker; Alex Frei, Streller (59. Zoua).

02.) 0:1 (Mohamed Salah, assist by Cabral)
64.) 1:1 (Matt Devlin Moussilou, assist by Sanogo)

Yann Sommer is not a happy bunny today...

What the heck is going on with Basel? Now it was pretty obvious that sacking Heiko Vogel (who was actually pretty well liked by the fans) for Murat Yakin (who is a not so well-liked figure after he talked Basel down quite a bit when he was still coach of Luzern) wasn't exactly the solution. They were clearly the inferior team today and the switch to a 3-player defense obviously didn't work either. Well, I hope next match will look better...

Sunday's Swiss Super League match: FC Zürich vs FC Basel 1893

FC Zürich: Da Costa; Teixeira, Djimsiti, Glarner, Gavranovic, Koch, Kukeli, Jahovic, Kajevic, Schönbächler, Chiumiento

FC Basel: Sommer; P. Degen, Schär, Dragovic, Steinhöfer; Gilles Yapi; D. Degen, A. Frei, F. Frei, Stocker; Streller

As the Basel players complained that FC Zürich only parked the bus when they met last time, the driver of the FCZ Bus promised they'd do it even better this time:
FC Basel - Page 4 Ptb10

Maybe they should have better tried a snow mobile.

As you can see, Zürich are playing in white and grey camouflage kits to give themselves even more of an advantage over Basel:
FC Basel - Page 4 Fcz10

But not even the snow camouflage helped much...

06.) 0:1 - Fabian Schär (assist Alex Frei)
29.) 0:2 - Alex Frei (assist Philipp Degen) - First goal of Alex Frei after a 643 minute goal drought!

*snif* This time the cutest goalie of them all couldn't save the penalty that was awarded to Zürich in the 87th minute (Gavranovic scored).
