BTW, here's a link to tageswoche.ch with the critiques for the players (6 is best, 1 is worst in their system):
http://www.tageswoche.ch/de/2012_19/sport/424124/cupsieger-fcb-die-einzelkritiken.htm
You need to run it through Google translation, I'm afraid, but they actually seem to have seen the match very much as I did as they didn't consider Shaqiri's performance too good.

That's cute, too: http://bazonline.ch/sport/fussball/Der-Uebermenschliche/story/18962023

Well, today Basel's undefeated series of 26 Super League matches without a loss came to an end when Servette FC defeated Basel at home with 1:2. The match wasn't really the best of Basel and so the team from Geneva deservedly scored the winner 5 minutes before the end of the match.

On a more positive note, Yann Sommer was voted MotM for the Basel-Luzern cup final at fcb.ch with an average of 5.80 (highest: 6.0), which was one of the highest marks ever given by the readers. ^^

In the second leg. In the first leg he completely shut out the Bayern attack :coffee:

One can only beat what is put in front of one :coffee:

(BTW, I hope Basel will survive the CL qualification. They have to enter in the 2nd quali round, so they would have to defeat three teams to get into the Group stage.)

I would have predicted them to do very decently, but they've just lost Xhaka and Shaqiri so I really doubt they'd do that well unless they have another generation of supertalents hidden somewhere, or world class scouts.

You might want to google around a bit - Marco Reus, formerly of BMG will play for Dortmund from next season. And he belongs to the German NT squad that was called up so far.

Heh. Looks like I'm not alone in my appreciation for Yann Sommer. FC Basel - Page 2 Red-he10

On the official FC Basel Website fcb.ch, Yann Sommer was voted "Player of the Season 2011/12" with about a third of the votes: http://www.fcb.ch/news/show/byItemID/de-de/10044/28044/16/7 Chaka

Die Top 7:
1 - Yann Sommer 33.9 %
2 - Alex Frei 24.7 %
3 - Xherdan Shaqiri 9.6 %
4 - Marco Streller 6.8 %
5 - David Abraham 4.5 %
6 - Alex Dragovic 3.2 %
7 - Beni Huggel 3.1 %

Basel have signed Marcelo Diaz. Currently a key player for U de Chile. Works very well in the midfield, has great passing ability and a great set piece taker.

RWO, mind keeping me updated on the player?

I shall see what I can do. Tomorrow evening at 18:30 CEST, there is a test match of FC Basel against SpVgg Unterhaching at the Sportplatz Warngau (about 50km away from Munich). I have no idea if I can find some stream, but I will look out for one.

On Saturday, 23 Jun 2012, Basel played another test match against Steaua Bucharest, but in the lineup there was no Marcelo Diaz as he hadn't arrived at the club yet. Basel's line-up in general was pretty depleted as several players hadn't joined the training camp yet.

This was Basel's line-up for the Steaua Bucharest friendly which they lost 2-4: Vailati; Philipp Degen, Kovac, Ajeti, Steinhöfer; David Degen (66. Andrist), Cabral (46. Fabian Frei), Yapi (72. Grether), Salah; Alex Frei (66. Vuleta), Streller (72. Pak).

This reminds me, I have to update the Basel squad for the season 2012/13 still. ^^

About Marcelo Diaz...he's going to join the squad later on in the summer for he's still got work to do in the Chilean league.

When he comes, he'll be rocking Cool

The new guys at Basel (at least the ones that already showed up) plus the coach Heiko Vogel:

I'll update the squad info at the first page as soon as there are some official portrait pics of them with the proper Basel kits.

BTW, the new GK kit of Basel is a somewhat more agreeable colour than the former drab green, grey or yellow:

The next two newcomers for FC Basel were unveiled today: 22-year-old CB Gastón Sauro (formerly Boca Juniors, Argentina) and 25-year-old CM Marcelo Diaz (formerly CF Universidad de Chile). Both signed a 4-year contract until 2016.

In Switzerland, the 2012/13 season is underway as of now!

FC Basel right now have their first match away against Servette FC in the Stade de Genève (kickoff was 19:45 GMT+2).

Servette: Gonzalez; Routis, Mfuyi, Schneider, Moubandje; Pasche (59. De Azevedo), Pizzinat; Tréand, Kouassi (81. Gissi), Lang (66. Moutinho); Karanovic.

FC Basel: Sommer; Steinhöfer, Kovac, Dragovic, Park; David Degen (77. Zoua), Cabral, Yapi (92. Grether), Stocker (85. Philipp Degen); Alex Frei, Streller.

FC Basel - Page 2 Sommer10

At HT it was still a scoreless draw. But at least I got a screenshot of Yann Sommer ^^

59. minute - Marco Streller with a fantastic assist and David Degen scores the first goal for Basel.

So. Full Time.

Servette FC – FC Basel 1893 0:1 (0:0) Stade de Genève. – Audience 8132 – Referee Sacha Kever. Goal: 59. David Degen 0:1 (assist: Streller).

Not a really good match, but the teams fought at least.
