Re: Borussia Mönchengladbach
Borussia M'gladbach will never spend big - they only spend the money they have. Moreover - why should they spend big if they actually manage to get the best out of their young players? IMO it is a fallacy that you will get much better value only if you spend more.
The Gladbach director of sports prefers to make shrewd signings of affordable players whose character fits with the team. That way you can be sure that they actually play as a team and thus they will always be better than the sum of their parts.
E.g. who wopuld you prefer to have on your team - David Luiz for 50 mio Euros or Andreas Christensen who is on loan? Some Diego Costa for 38 mio Euros (16 goals / 11 assists in all competitions among them 2/3 in 8 CL matches) or Lars Stindl who cost 3 mio Euros (14 goals / 15 assists in all competitions among them 3/2 in 6 CL matches)?
IMO you should not look so much at the price tag, but rather at how the players fit into the team.

Rumours are that Christoph Kramer might return, also there is rumoured interest in Sebastian Rode and Youri Tielemans. But with Max Eberl, one never knows. He might have someone on the radar you haven't really heard before.

Re: Borussia Mönchengladbach
Yeah. That's why he didn't start often at Leverkusen, and thus he is not very happy there at the moment. As he left Gladbach on very good terms, he would be welcomed back with open arms, and it is very likely that he would fit better at Gladbach again than he did at Leverkusen.

Fair enough.
I don't think BMG will get Tielemans but Rode or Kramer (or both) would be great pick ups.

Re: Borussia Mönchengladbach
Yeah. And Gladbach is known to be able to work well with young players, so they might be able to uncover some more talents. There is a young Swiss CM in Djibril Sow who might be promoted to the first team now, too. He came from the FC Zürich youth last year and showed quite some promise in the second team of Gladbach in the Regionalliga West.

Re: Borussia Mönchengladbach
Well, it is directly related with the preferences concerning football of the people who are active on this forum. It may reveal a contradiction between what some of them pretend to know about some particular football teams (in the General Section) and what they really know.
I didn't even know that Gladbach plays an attacking 3-5-2.
Plus, now I am really curious about this Raffael. Heard of him before, but somehow only now I thought that he must be very good because I consciously reminded that every time I heard about him in the past was because he scored goals and had great performances.
Considering the fact that I didn't watch much football last season (I had some hard times with my personal life), I didn't manage to follow Bundesliga, not even a single game.
But this year, I'll take a look if I'll have time. However, my priorities are still Man United and Juventus.
Gladbach - Leverkusen should be interesting, though!

Re: Borussia Mönchengladbach
So true... But I thought I'd just update this thread no matter how many people read it, just for fun.
As for BMG's tactical set up - it is actually pretty variable.
Here's how they lined up against YB in the first match - this was more of a 3-4-3 set-up:
Additionally, Gladbach are pretty fluid by now and Oscar Wendt falls back to make it a back 4 if needed, too.
André Schubert already successfully implemented a back 3 against Bayern away last season:
And this was last season's line up for Gladbach's 3:1 home win against Bayern:
If you want to watch exciting Bundesliga matches, you are well advised to take a look at matches involving the foals.

Re: Borussia Mönchengladbach
So, Stindl is more of a player being used behind the strikers, not in the front of the midfielders, right? I know it sounds a little bit like a nonsense, but hopefully you will get my point.
And when I said 3-5-2 I kind of had a gut feeling that they are more versatile regarding the formation they use. Usually teams which play with a 3-5-3 (3-4-3) display, prefer to change the formation from time to time. I didn't figure out why, it's just something that I observed in Serie A and now at Gladbach thanks to the info provided by you.
When I observed this in Serie A a few years ago, I thought it is about the management of the players' fitness and fatigue.
With Xhaka gone, is it probable that they won't play with only one player in front of the defenders (like the formation used away at Bayern last season? Anybody to fulfill that role this season?

Re: Borussia Mönchengladbach
When Lars Stindl came to Gladbach last season, it was first expected that he was supposed to replace Chris Kramer at CM/DM, but iot turned out he was far better playing behind the strikers.
Fortunately it turned out that freshly promoted youth player Mahmoud Dahoud was a great option as CM (DM and AM, too).
I'm not sure any of the players is currently (!) able to replace Granit Xhaka 1:1, but it is well possible that Chris Kramer might be able to do that in due time. Mo Dahoud is a bit more attacking, so he needs someone behind him.
As for changing the formation - it might be necessary as the 3 man back line might be either too leaky or if the wingers draw back to make it 5-3-2, then they cede the midfield too much. So it might be a good thing if they can draw one player back to make it a 4-2-2-2/4-4-2 instead.

Re: Borussia Mönchengladbach
Bundesliga Matchday 1 - 27 Aug 2016
Borussia M'gladbach vs Bayer Leverkusen
Borussia Mönchengladbach: Sommer - Elvedi, Christensen, Jantschke (46. Vestergaard) - Kramer, Strobl - Traoré (61. Johnson), Wendt - Stindl, Hahn (83. Hazard), Raffael
Bayer Leverkusen: Leno - Jedvaj, Tah, Toprak, Wendell - Baumgartlinger, Aranguiz (77. Pohjanpalo) - Bellarabi, Kampl - Calhanoglu (64. Mehmedi) - Volland (64. Brandt)
Goals:
45.) 1:0 - André Hahn (assist by Chris Kramer)
79.) 1:1 - Joel Pohjanpalo (assist by Karim Bellarabi)
85.) 2:1 - Lars Stindl (assist by Thorgan Hazard)
FT - Borussia M'gladbach 2:1 Bayer Leverkusen
Good start into the season for once - and while Gladbach were unlucky with referee decisions quite a bit in the last season, in this match they can't really complain as for both goals profitted from favourable referee decisions (the first goal resulted from a free kick when the ball was not yet lying completely still, while for the second, there was a marginal offside in the build-up.
André Hahn celebrates his 1:0

On 29 Aug 2016, Yann Sommer was named Swiss Player of the Year 2016. This was only the third time that a goalkeeper got this award. Additionally he got the award for the Best Save of the Year 2016 for his save against Shkelzen Gashi in the 85th minute of the Euro 2016 match Switzerland vs Albania.
Nico Elvedi was named "Rookie of the Year 2016":

Re: Borussia Mönchengladbach
Bundesliga Matchday 2 - 10 Sep 2016
SC Freiburg vs Borussia M'gladbach
SC Freiburg: Schwolow - Stenzel, Gulde, Söyüncü, Günter - Höfler, Frantz (67. Haberer) - Bulut, Grifo (89. Abrashi) - Philipp - Niederlechner (82. Petersen)
Borussia Mönchengladbach: Sommer - Elvedi (77. Herrmann), Christensen, Jantschke - Kramer, Strobl - Traoré, Wendt - Stindl, Hazard (69. Vestergaard), Raffael (69. Hahn)
Goals:
35.) 0:1 - Thorgan Hazard
54.) 1:1 - Maximilian Philipp (assist by Vicenzo Grifo)
85.) 2:1 - Maximilian Philipp (assist by Nils Petersen)
88.) 3:1 - Nils Petersen (PK)
FT - SC Freiburg 3:1 Borussia M'gladbach
Gladbach's "away bestia negra" strikes again... The less is talked about this match, the better.
As you can see it's been a while since Gladbach last won in Freiburg:
I would just love to know why Schubert turned the 3 men defence into a 4 men defence in the 69th minute when he replaced Thorgan Hazard by Yannick Vestergaard, just to return to a backline of 3 only 8 minutes later when he took out Nico Elvedi for Patrick Herrmann. That this won't lead to a more stable defence should be obvious - or not?
Let's finish this with what I thought about this match:
SC Freiburg vs Borussia M'gladbach
SC Freiburg: Schwolow - Stenzel, Gulde, Söyüncü, Günter - Höfler, Frantz (67. Haberer) - Bulut, Grifo (89. Abrashi) - Philipp - Niederlechner (82. Petersen)

- Spoiler:
I would just love to know why Schubert turned the 3 men defence into a 4 men defence in the 69th minute when he replaced Thorgan Hazard by Yannick Vestergaard, just to return to a backline of 3 only 8 minutes later when he took out Nico Elvedi for Patrick Herrmann. That this won't lead to a more stable defence should be obvious - or not?
Let's finish this with what I thought about this match:
