many places
mathematicians are extremely logical, and smart at what they are doing. They tend to have a very good logic/order/ yet abstract enough to think differently.
I always hate the word abstract here as it doesn't explain anything. Personally and informally, I prefer the term "general".
There is a reason why "abstract algebra" is also known as "universal algebra" because the language and all the results in the field can be applied to many other fields of mathematics.
Hence, why I dislike the term "abstract". On the other hand, the term "general" (even though informal) gives a somewhat clearer sense to the listener.

If you change one element or exchange two rows of an unit matrix by addition you get an elementary matrix.

Re: Maths- Gym for Brainiacs
Thanks Babs,I already got it yesterday.
this is not advanced algebra, im on second week of engineering, doing linear algebra/analytic geometry I.
So far im struggling in physics and calculus and doing pretty well in algebra,we are just viewing Matrix and Linear Systems.I would be doing pretty well like everybody else if I hadn't studied in those shitty US high schools who teach elementary school topics for 18 year olds
I got 3 projects and a list of 100 exercises in my first week my friends are doing the projects for me though

Re: Maths- Gym for Brainiacs
A practical question... After a city map is used there multiple ways to fold it back depending on the numbers of colums. If you've got 2 columns there're only two ways to fold your map. If you've got 3 the matter gets complicated:
A map with 3 columns. Let's see how many possibilities to fold exist:
As you see there're 6 possibilities to fold the map or better said 3!
The question: How many possibilities exist for a map with 4 columns?
How about six?
How about being a smartass and solving the problem for n columns?!
Have fun

Re: Maths- Gym for Brainiacs
I think this is about arranging each column in a sequence.
So for 2 columns, there are 2! = 2 ways. For 3 columns, there are 3! = 6 ways. For 4 columns, there are 4! = 24 ways. For 6 columns there are 6! = 720 ways. For n columns, there are n! ways.

Re: Maths- Gym for Brainiacs
Is it really that many ways for 4 columns? I don't see it, lol, maybe I'm seeing it wrong. I tried to just expanding from the result for 3 columns to get the numbers of ways for 4 columns. So something like this:
I only see 3 ways to put the column 4 if the column 3 is at the very top or bottom. And there are only 2 ways to put the column 4 if the column 3 is sandwiched between column 1 and 2. Column 3 is on the top twice, on the bottom twice and being sandwiched twice. Hence I only see (3 x 4) + (2 x 2) = 16 ways for 4 columns. What are another 8 ways for 4 columns that I missed?
