Do you want Cahill to be Alex's replacement should Alex leave?
Gary Cahill
Villas-Boas has confirmed the club are interested in him:
So basically he's saying if Alex leaves Cahill will be considered a possible replacement, if Alex doesn't leave then Cahill won't come.
Cahill's contract expires this summer and we can easily get him for less than 10m this January. Now that I think about it this wouldn't be such a bad deal because lets be honest, Cahill is never going to be a starter for us and he's only going to be brought in to be the third or fourth choice defender. He's not suited to the high line either so he's basically just a replacement for fourth-choice Alex. In addition, Cahill won't threaten Bruma's or Kalas's or even Chalobah's place because when those guys come in they would be competing directly for the starting 11 spot.
Personally I won't mind him coming if Alex leaves.

You know that we have taken a decision this season regarding the central defenders, regarding Alex.
We haven't decided yet what we are going to do with the Alex situation.
We have to make the wisest decision, be it Alex, be it Cahill."

Who else would you choose? Or do you think no replacement is necessary?

Dammit just realized the poll doesn't make much sense hehe
Could a mod combine the 'no' and 'buy a better defender' options?

I would much rather spend 30m on Smalling or buy someone from another country than buy Cahill. The only way I would take him is if everyone else said no. I don't rate the guy.

Re: Gary Cahill
Do not want, although if he accepts a decent wage and a role as a 3/4th choice then £7M is aight I'd still like to see a price below the 5 mark though. Being English I suppose his fee doubles , Alex is leaving anyways and he's not cup tied for UCL which is a bonus if we get some sort of crisis.

But don't you think he's a good enough third/fourth choice defender? Why would you want to spend 30m on a defender who we would then have to put in the starting 11 and then bench one of Terry and Luiz? We already have quality defenders on loan we just need to fill in the spot left by Alex, that's all.
Also Cahill is a home grown player and Alex is not, so we will have 1 non-homegrown spot open should we get him, which we could use for another player. Also I don't think he'll cost more than 10m since Bolton will have to sell in January, and when Alex leaves he'll generate money so we'll basically be paying what we get for Alex on Cahill.
Buying a RB won't solve anything in terms of the CB situation.

Re: Gary Cahill
Smalling is young and english and IMO a better player, he would be third choice and would secure up our defence for years IMO.
What I am saying is I jut don't rate Cahill that highly, but if worst comes to worst I would accept him.

Re: Gary Cahill
I don't rate Cahill highly either. He is a bit above average defender.
But if comes for less than 10m and with Alex going for around 5m and us needing a CB I think it's only a win-win situation.

Re: Gary Cahill
Cahill > Alex on current form and tactics
He's English and if he's willing to settle for a rotation role for a decent fee, why not? We are replacing Alex for depth, not finding the successor to Terry.
Ivanovic may not like it but he can't deny that he is much better at RB.
Ivanovic Luiz/Cahill Terry Cole - looks good.

How about you read the OP before you come up with foolish conclusions? I already addressed those concerns.
Never concluded anything I was just asking questions. Sorry.

You see we need a replacement for Alex if he leaves because the only CB's we'll have left would be Luiz, Terry and Ivanovic. In that case we could either a) buy a 20m+ talented CB who would want a starting 11 spot and replace Luiz or Terry or b) buy a defender like Cahill who would never make it into our starting 11 but be a direct replacement for Alex.
Since we would need a replacement, in that case option b is actually the best option bearing the fact that we two of the best defensive prospects in Europe, Bruma and Kalas, who still need until June or until 2012 to be introduced into the starting 11.
Of course the media is going to call for Cahill to replace Luiz but we all know that Cahill is just an above average English defender who'll never get past the bench at Chelsea. In other words Cahill would just be for the short term, as he wouldn't fit into the high line either.

Thanks for the explanation. I really do think that the media is just hyping up Cahill. He's not horrible but he isn't an upgrade over any of your CBs. So a short term for Alex he is. He should not even cost anywhere above 10m to be honest.

We shouldn't pay anything more than 9m pounds for him. If we are interested, I imagine the negotiations would last until the last day since Bolton would try to cough up as much money as possible (his contract expires this summer).

Re: Gary Cahill
Tbh i think we might need two CB.
Ivanovic is a RB imo, Terry is most likely going to be suspended sometime in February, and lets hope Luiz stays injury free.
